Rumour has it that the next volume in the Road Trips series will be from mid-1971 - if it's correct, it's an extremely interesting move, given the reasonably recent releases of both Dicks Picks 35 ("The Houseboat Tapes") and Three From The Vault.

Does anyone have any more on this?

I have heard the same rumors from a semi-close source. No more details. I should say that he added the caveat "I could be wrong." It is an awful lot of 71 in close proximity. But there are some gems to be mined from the middle of the year. I could go for a disc of the two big jams from the Yale Bowl.

If it does turn out to be a '71 show, it'll definitely hit a sweet spot with me.

I'd really love to see the two shows from Berkelely Community Theater get released in full - 8/14-8/15/71

Oh my! I really hope this stuff is true.

I'm pretty sure they DO now have Yale Bowl in its' entirety (I understand all of the material for this release was acquired from the same source ) - as a whole show, it's probably not quite up to release standard, though the selected segments are up there with anything else from the period (the Dark Star is the best of the Skullfuck quintet era, IMHO).

I would love to see any leftovers hit circulation afterwards, though experience tells me this might not happen, the way it used to, when Dick was around and involved with releases.

Anyway, Dead.Net currently appears to be down for maintenance, so hopefully this means an announcement in the next day or two...

(If there's one thing I've been hoping to hear pretty much all my GD-collecting life, it's the SBD of Yale Bowl, especially since confirming it's existence a year or so back).

Superb news, Federico - Yale Bowl is the one I've been waiting for.

The only personal downside (if there IS a downside), is that no future GD release could top this for me now... unless they want to put together a multi-disc DVD retrospective, that is!

From your positive reviews, I'll have to try to save up for this, I've been playing R.T. #2 alot lately.

RT3 arrived today. This one will get a lot of play. Much better sound than DP35 which I thought had some tape saturation problems. Lesh is very full in the mix on this set. Completely captures his '71 sound, like he is using telephone poles for strings. The Dark Star has a small AUD patch that is expertly executed. This set is programmed much better than the first two RTs. The discs have a real flow to them.

All in all easily the best of the first three RTs.

They used an AUD patch on DP35 too. The Fallout from the PhilZone compilation uses an amazing audience recording of the 8.6.71 Hard to Handle that is referenced in the promotional blurb above.

I'm tempted to get this I just wish they'd put it out in stores instead of online.[i'd buy it far quicker if they did]

I listened to the first disc last night. The Yale Bowl show is a monster. Writers keep talking about how '71 was a transitional year for the Dead as far as live shows go. Yet it seems as if every '71 show I've heard is, relative to the Dead, bouncy and agressive compared to other tours. I'd have to think '71 shows would be a great springboard for first time Dead fans todive in to see if they like them or not.
I do, however, have a complaint on the packaging for the Road Trips series and for Dead titles since the new regime took over. They have got to start going back to using CD trays again. When the discs are getting packed into these carboard things, there's microdust and some such things getting on these discs because it isn't common for me to have to stop and start the discs repeatedly before I can get them to play properly without skipping around. I have to blow on the discs and inside my player's disc holder in order to clear whatever it is which makes my Dead discs skip when I first get them. It always happens at different spots which indicates dust or packing crap on the playing surface of the disc. When I played Disc 1, I had to blow on the disc about a half dozen times before it finally cleared for me to play it with no skips.

I have to say, fair play to GDM on this. Not only was the shipping much cheaper than usual, but, despite being in the UK, my set arrived the day before Frederico announced his had arrived, taking less than a week to ship. For an organisation that used to ship expensive and slow, this is a very great improvement! Sadly, the faster shipping is a little wasted on me as I've not yet been able to listen to it.

Maybe I'm getting old or something, I used to have no problem understanding Grateful Dead recording dates and sources, but the whole Hollywood Palladium thing has left me completely confused. If anyone can confirm the following, I'd be very grateful.

I believe the bonus disc material from Hollywood Palladium (8/6/71) is taken from the same show as most of DP35 disc 4, but the source of the material is different, is this correct?

The setlist for this show on http://www.dead.net doesn't list Deal as being played at that show, yet it appears on DP35 disc 4 in the middle of the Hollywood Palladium material. Does anyone know whether this an error in the setlist or an error on DP35?

Is the Hard To Handle from the same show the same as the Hard To Handle that appears on Fallout From The Phil Zone from an audience recording?

I am looking forward to this release. I am hoping I'll have it by the weekend - good material while working in the garden.

On a quasi-related note: I realized I did not have Pure Jerry 7 - which was released how long ago??. So I go to order. The two disc set is $15.95 (not bad at all); and in June, if you buy any music from the website, they'll throw in "Shining Star" - a very nice comp of live material - and something from the Jerry Grab Bag. I have Shining Star, so I thought, a nice gift for the holidays.
But when it came to shipping, the cheapest they had was $12.75 (actually two types of shipping for that price). I had to call and confirm, and yes, that was the cheapest (I know I paid much less in the past). They lost a sale. I'll check in July, and see if they drop the 'freebies" and the price...but I can't justify paying that kind of money for shipping. Its criminal.

Re Hollywood Palladium:

For many years, all that circulated of this show was the incredible-sounding audience source - that tape supplied the recording of Hard To Handle on Fallout From The Phil Zone in 1997.

In 2005, the "Houseboat Tapes" turned up (the stash of material loaned to Keith Godchaux in 1971, and found by his brother in a clearance) - amongst this material was the soundboard of Set 2 of Hollywood Palladium, with the Other One through the end of the show making up the bulk of disc 4 of Dick's Picks 35. Interestingly, because of some missing drums before The Other One, the master copy of the audience recording supplied the first few minutes of this sequence, before being returned to its' owners.

At that time, the soundboard of Set 1 of Hollywood Palladium was still missing in action (as was all of Yale Bowl, which itself was believed wiped or unrecorded, following discovery of blank reels for this show in the houseboat).

Then last year a further batch of Summer '71 soundboard tapes were returned to the GD's custody - the full story of where these tapes had been hasn't yet been told but, amongst them, was all of Yale Bowl and Set 1 of Hollywood Palladium. This second discovery forms the basis of Road Trips No 1 Volume 3 - five songs from the newly-discovered soundboard of Set 1 of Hollywood Palladium are featured on the bonus disc.

Hope this summarises things - Federico: have I missed anything?

I received all three today, and though I've only had a chance to sample them, they sound terrific. I really like having the chance to sample the band's sound from individual tours. These are definitely worth picking up.
