This comp was done in a similar manner to the recent Elvis collections where a few tracks were remixed to try to create new, contemporary-sounding hits out of old recordings. Check out the video for the remixed version of "Beggin'" ~ it's bizarre and cool, but not something we'd expect from the Seasons camp:

I was all over Europe this past summer and spring, and "Beggin'" was a big hit even in odd places like Turkey and Moldavia!

Thanks, Linda!
I think it's odd that the remix is at a slightly SLOWER tempo than the original!

"Beggin'" is one of my favorite songs of theirs, and it always made me so sad that you never hear it on the radio. I guess I should move to Turkey. Or... just find these remixes on-line somewhere. I'm not really into picking up another 4 Seasons comp.

Paul, there is a CD single of the Beggin' remix if you don't want the entire compilation album:

Image

2007 CD single, a remix of an obscure Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons track. Frankie Valli has had what you might call a varied career: you might know him best for the theme song to Grease and he was last spotted on TV coming to a grisly end as Rusty in the Sopranos. But as well as 'Grease' and 'Oh What A Night' the Italian American crooner has made some storming white soul records that over the last 30 years have been leapt on by the Northern soul and disco undergrounds. 'Beggin' is the track, a tune that, re-edited by Parisian DJ Pilooski on one of his ultra-limited Dirty Edits twelve inches on his own Dark & Lovely label, became a euphoric fusion of emotional Northern soul stomper and end-of-the-night, hands-in-the-air rave moment. Features two versions of 'Beggin'': Pilooski Re-Edit Radio Version and Original Version. 679. 2007.

1. Pilooski Re-Edit Radio Edit
2. Original Version

Amazon's third party dealers currently have copies in stock for as low as $3.17:

The station my wife listens to sometimes plays a remixed version of December 1963. It's close to the original except for a more contemporary drum sound. Anyone know what release that one comes from?

That may well be the remix from 1994, when the song became a hit all over again, reaching #14 on the Hot 100. It was issued by Curb Records, and appears on a number of comps.

There was also a British dance group called Clock who recorded a lovely and quite faithful cover of "Oh What a Night" in '95 or '96.

The play Jersey Boys begins with a French version of December 1963 (Oh What A Night) which is then referred to in the dialogue as a #1 hit in France in (I believe) 2002. Does anyone have any idea who performed that hit and where I might find a copy?

David,

There have been two French cover versions of "December 1963". The first was done by Claude Francois in 1976 under the title "Cette Année-Là" ~ it's available on his best-of collection:

The other was a dance version done in 2000 by Yannick under the title "Ces Soirées-Là", which is on this album:

(I haven't seen Jersey Boys so I don't know which version they performed. The dance/disco version by Yannick is the one that was a hit in 2002, but they might have been mixing it up with the Francois version from the '76 which is a lot more faithful to the sound of the original Seasons version.)

Linda,
Thanks very much. I am virtually certain it's the Yannick version. Ordered and on the way. And if you have the opportunity, Jersey Boys is a fun evening at the theatre. Saw it in Chicago. My bride has been twice already and it just opened here in October.
