I'm going to show you guys what she just posted on another forum I frequent. I know someone here will know the solution.....

So, this copy of A Ghost Is Born that I just bought on Thursday night, when I play it in my stereo at like...volume level10 or lower, makes this really high-pitched kind of whirring noise that kind of sounds like it's maybe the sound of the CD spinning? Anyway. My Speaking for Trees CD did the same thing, and I resurfaced it with the trusty Skip Dr. a couple of times and now it plays fine no matter how quiet (at least it did last time I played it), but that's not working with this Wilco disc. Annnnnd like, only certain CDs of mine do this. And I was wondering if anyone knew wtf the problem could be.

Someone else told her that both cds are silver with no writing at all on top and for some reason that could be causing her problem. He advised her to copy the discs onto blank cds and play those. At this point, she doesn't want to do that. She wants to solve the problem if possible

The player is having "read" or tracking problems with those CDs. This is nearly always a fault of the player, unless it only happens on a disc or two.

I told her that I thought it was a player issue. I have a 5cd/dvd carousel myself and once in awhile I'll notice that I'll play certain dvds and there is a loud tracking noise, and if I switch that dvd to another place in the carousel it will work fine. Strange. Thanks for your help.

How old is the player? Has she tried the discs on other players? Often, multi disc players are under engineered compared to a single disc player of the same price point. There seems to be a strategy to keep low end muti disc players at similar pricing to entry level single disc players. They have to cut costs somewhere to do so.

Also, in my experience, the rare times I've encountered spinning noise on a
factory pressed cd is either from a crack in the disc or a severe warp.

I've mostly run into the kind of noise you describe when stick on labels on cdr's start coming loose (she doesn't put an address label on her cd's, does she??)

Geff, thanks for your info. I have no idea what she does with her discs. I'm just going to copy/paste your response and send it to her. I'm sure it's probably an old player and it's time for a new one. Hopefully a single tray one. Thanks again for your help
