i was once a huge mellencamp fan, but his voice (due to cigarettes i'm sure) has just gotten to the point where i have a hard time listening to him anymore.

Yeah, his Tom Waits voices and somber low key songs is quite a change. It's still "good," but his last several albums have been almost monotone in that style and sound.
