Description
Esoteric Recordings is proud to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded 3 CD 40th Anniversary edition of the classic album 24 CARROTS by AL STEWART. Released in 1980, the album came on the heels of a series of highly successful albums YEAR OF THE CAT and TIME PASSAGES, which saw the legendary folk-rock musician reach a wider audience and, after adopting a more rock orientated approach, gain top ten success in the USA where he had relocated.

For the album 24 CARROTS he worked with the musicians in the band SHOT IN THE DARK featuring his musical collaborator PETER WHITE (keyboards, guitar), ADAM YURMAN (electric guitar), ROBIN LAMBLE (bass, guitar), KRYSIA KRISTIANNE (backing vocals), BRIAN SAVAGE (saxophone, flute), ROBIN MARLETTE (keyboards) and various drummers including Steve Chapman and Jeff Porcaro. It also featured a guest appearance by ROBIN WILLIAMSON (Incredible String Band). Sessions for the album began at Davlen studios in Los Angeles in August 1979 where Al worked with Shot in the Dark on a series of demos of some compositions that would make up the album, and others which would remain consigned to the vaults. When completed in May 1980 the album would feature classic tracks such as ‘Running Man’, ‘Merlin’s Time’, ‘Murmansk Run – Ellis Island’ and the US top thirty hit single ‘Midnight Rocks’. Upon its release in August 1980, 24 CARROTS would be another American Top Forty hit and would also be a success in other European countries.

This 40th anniversary edition of 24 CARROTS has been newly expanded from the original first-generation master tapes and includes two rare single mixes previously unreleased on CD and two additional CDs featuring the August 1979 Davlen studios demo sessions (including an early studio version of The World Goes to Riyadh) and a CD of live recordings made at Hammersmith Odeon in London in December 1980 on the 24 CARROTS tour. The release also includes an illustrated booklet with an exclusive new interview with Al Stewart. This 40th anniversary edition serves as a fine tribute to a fine album and a consummate songwriter and performer.

I'm with Renny, why this one before more obvious choices? -- Year of the Cat and Time Passages to name a couple...

renny meant perplexed, but confounded is also a good word.

because of what was said above, there are surely some much more obvious choices in that wonderful catalog of stewart's than this one....i thought i was the only person who even bought '24 c/parrots'

We should be pleased that these are being upgraded in any order, even if Year Of The Cat comes last.

This was a good album.

The live bonus disc will be great.

The album had a hit single and made the Top 50.

It’s not some obscure piece of work.

Sales aside, why not do this?

Sadly, his shows have gotten quite short, too short, but his material is always top notch. I'm in on almost anything that he releases, including this.

you always want to argue.

yes it is a good album, all his albums are actually pretty darn good. but, if you look at his discography only 2 of his albums sold really well, and those are the 2 big ones, of course.

and yes 'midnight rocks' made all the way to #13 in the US (i was shocked that 'year of the cat' only made it up to #8).

in the grand scheme of things though, it just seems that it might have more prudent to start with the big 2 and see how they do and move on from there. that's all.

relax and enjoy your day. maybe harper will hit one in the upper deck today, he almost did it yesterday.

Relax?

How could you interpret anything on this thread as combative?

I said "why not do this?" and that was it.

I don't understand you and never will.

Argue, or just present reasons he is not perplexed to see this get a release?

you know, it ain't even worth trying to explain, there just are not enough of us left that would understand.

your are right and he is right, it is not perplexing, it is definitely the album that i would have done a deluxe treatment on in stewart's catalog too.

That's nice to hear, but that's certainly not what I'd glean from the word "perplexing". If I replied with just the word "perplexing", I'd be prepared for some blowback.

It is quite likely Cherry Red can not Cherry Pick the titles they want from Mr Stewart, it comes down to what they can license from the parent label. Bitching that they did not choose Year of the Cat or Modern Times is quite hilarious in my opinion. They probably could not get them.

We have lots of great versions of Time Passages,Year of the Cat, Modern Times, PP&F plus the Time Passages live promo is out on budget CD. His core catalogue was nailed nicely by Collectors' Choice, all of the CDs sound good and bonus tracks were used on many of them.

I'm neither perplexed nor confounded. I really like this album. But if the tour was partially in support of this album, I would have liked more than just two carrots in concert. It's still on my list though.

Confirmed that a 2CD Expanded Edition of Year Of The Cat is coming in March, remastered by Alan Parsons. This should end the perplexity and confoundedness. I'll open a thread for it once we have Amazon pre-order links.

Cue the why does Year of the Cat only get 2 CDs while 24 Carrots gets 3 comments. More perplexing issues for 2021.
