I'm one of the people who still subscribes to Netflix's DVD service, and when I got my latest disc in the mail today, I wondered just how small a crowd that is nowadays, and even worried a little just how much longer the service might be around if the subscriber base is dwindling. So I tried to look it up.

This article is from last summer, but apparently the crowd is bigger than I thought!

https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/04/media/ne ... index.html

Over 2.7 million subscribers in the US alone, and it's still very profitable for Netflix. That's a relief. I use the streaming service for sure (and several others besides), but the selection is so much better on the DVD side. I think the article said only about 6,000 selections available for streaming compared to about 100,000 for DVDs.

The streaming service does not even attempt to be an "On Demand" streaming service. That has always puzzled me about Netflix. You have to have Amazon or Apple TV to supplement it, because Netflix has stupidly never figured out a way (maybe a contract negotiation problem?) to be full service (i.e. pay on demand). Maybe they think it would confuse people, but Amazon works it out just fine. And Apple has worked it out fine with their "Apple +" designation.

We subscribe to Netflix's DVD and digital service. A lot of the older movies I want to see aren't available through Netflix streaming.

The DVD service doesn't really pay off until your third movie watched per month. You can stream most anything for $3.99 on Amazon.

I still use the Netflix service for Blu-rays so I don't have to buy them unless it really is a must own movie (rare these days). We do use the streaming service a whole heck more but I like having both for now.

Still have the DVD service in addition to the streaming. My kids would rise up in revolt if we ditched the streaming.

My DVD queue is down to about 16 titles. Cleaned it up a bit and got rid of the 'short wait' ones that are never going to come. I think my list of DVDs they've pulled from inventory before I got them is longer. We're probably going to ditch this, though.

So you're saying getting a DVD and not getting around to watching it for months is not a good plan?

I actually upgraded my Netflix service to 4K streaming because I upgraded my tv to a 4K.
