My disagreement with Evans on whether John Byrne qualifies got me thinking -- who do you consider to be a true master of the comic book medium? Additionally -- what qualifications should a master have? Obviously, clear storytelling is key but I think it has to go beyond telling a story clearly -- any artist considered good (but not a true master) should be able to do that. Things like solid figure drawing, perspective, etc. are all prerequisites for just being a solid artist -- we're talking mastery here. For me personally, I think a true master has to have the following qualities -- a) Innovation -- The artist has created or popularized narrative techniques or concepts and has thus expanded the medium's potential (ex. Kirby's use of blast lines, exaggerated posing of figures, Kirby crackle, etc.)
b) Expression -- The artist's work alone can evoke emotions in most readers -- you not only understand the basic story from looking at the art but you also feel a mood, tone and sense of drama from the work
c) Influence -- I think a true master influences or even forces existing artists to change their game and molds younger artist's approach to learning and understanding sequential storytelling
d) Range -- The artist can work in a variety of genres and formats
e) Body of Work -- Should go without saying, but there should be some pretty impressive stories and runs from the creator's career What else? And finally -- can a writer who doesn't actually draw sequential art be considered a master of the medium? If so, what qualities must they possess?

I haven't seen anyone on this list I would disagree with. I'm adding Milo Manara, P. Craig Russell, Dave Sim, Alex Toth and Bernie Wrightson. For newer guys, I'll throw in Jordi Bernet and Pedro Risso, both of whom I think are brilliant.

I'd add:
Romita, both Senior and Jr. to the list as well.
Unless somehow my eyesight has failed me and I missed their being mentioned.

I like a lot of these people, but I don't know. "Masters" is a hard title to live up to— or it isn't much of a title at all, is it? How many true masters can there be in an art form we're giving only about 100 years to?
And should we separate comic book from comic strip or not?
