Description
He’s commonly thought of as the quintessential West Coast singer songwriter, but, as his celebrated collaborations with jazz flautist Tim Weisberg and soundtrack composer Domenic Frontiere demonstrate, the Peoria-born Dan Fogelberg had a restless artistic spirit that took him beyond the typical country-influenced, folk-rock sound of his contemporaries. And it is that constant thirst for experimentation and change that make this new 2-CD career-spanning retrospective such a great listen. From rockers like “Phoenix,” “As the Raven Flies,” and “The Power of Gold,” to chart-topping, radio-friendly fare like “Longer,” “Same Old Lang Syne,” “Hard to Say,” and “Leader of the Band,” to more idiosyncratic offerings like “Tucson, Arizona (Gazette)” and “Heart Hotels,” The Definitive Anthology cherry picks 28 tracks from ten of Fogelberg’s studio releases plus two tracks (“Missing You” and “Make Love Stay”) that first were released on his Greatest Hits album to form a full portrait of a multi-faceted, complex songwriter and musician. Bill Kopp’s liner notes guide the listener through each album and track. Remastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in New York!

Only some of the tracklist made it through from the solicitation, so I've posted what we have. More details to follow.

Now here's a catalogue that needs an overall.

this must be to replace the OOP box set. which only had a scant few rarities on it,

will wait for disc one, but other than the single versions nothing rare on disc two.

The "Portraits" box needs an overhaul! It was one of the first brickwalled releases I ran into. I have no idea what the "DR" is, I just remember my ears telling me it sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard.

That said, the only rarity I remember being on the box was the superb Hearts & Crafts (The best song (not) on Innocent Age).

So, I would personally only consider this if CD #1 has rarities, as I am 100% catalog; & I have either Japanese Mini LP's &/or BGO's on all of my favorites. (Home Free - Innocent Age)

Agree. Not sure what the deal is with Real Gone. They do a fantastic job content-wise, but their cover art (with rare exception) has been consistently horrible. They really need to get a better graphic designer.

With Vic A, I'd buy this for one song if Hearts & Crafts (his only b-side that I know of & a great song; it was on the brickwalled box set) was on here; but it isn't. And I've already got nice UK & Japan import remasters of Home Free, Souvenirs, Captured Angel, Netherlands, Phoenix, Twin Sons, & Innocent Age (With Innocent Age, fyi: the Japan Mini LP sucks; buy the BGO).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0096Q54J6/?tag=imwan-21

I GUESS if it turns up really cheap, I could use upgrades of Tuscon Arizona, Make Love Stay & Missing You; but it would have to be cheap for 3 songs...... Though I THINK I could then sell my box set which seems to be going for big money; so that may actually make this a worthwhile purchase (DAMN, why did they leave Hearts & Crafts off?? GRRRRRRR!)

Of course this is way cheaper; but imo his first 4 albums are the truly essential ones; & one can buy two BGO 2 cd sets for only a bit more then this.

many fail realize that fogelberg played and sang every single note on 'captured angel" except for the drums.'''

IMHO 'captured angel' is one of the most, if the most, underrated album of any artist ever. almost perfect.

Agree on both. In fact, DF inspired me to try to do the same as a young adult on a 6 track. Unfortunately, I caved to a girlfriend's complaining that II never left my home studio, so i didn't finish it. I at least left the girlfriend eventually.

I'll trust your judgement and order this

Linda: can you provide a link for that album? I'll order at Amazon

Adrian,

This is the most recent standalone edition of Captured Angel, a 2008 budget release on Sony Special Products:

The album's success may have been handicapped by that cover.

Other then the single Part Of The Plan, DF's only huge seller was Innocent Age.

It would make more sense on a heavy metal album!

If I remember right (LOL) DF Painted that cover, & was trying to do a Joni Mitchell. I THINK he did the cover for Home Free, also.
