I bet Jimbo that there was no way you'd complain about a compilation today, and now I'm $5 poorer.

This has now dropped to just £6.60 (it was over twice the price earlier today):

That was not a wise bet Linda.

and yes id complain a lot about comps, greatest hits, box sets, etc etc etc........why.....you ask (probably didn't ask but you are going to hear it anyway)

we, me, as the consumer of music for over 50 years now, believes that if you are going to do something at this point in time, do it right.

the object at this point in time should not be to milk the public of their cash, but that is exactly what it has become. (and yes, i know that no one is forcing anyone to buy anything.)

however, the constant, and i mean constant, recycling of the same old stuff on various incarnations of albums has just gotten to the point of absurdity. i get the argument of selling the music to new fans, i really do, but in the case of the byrds: 2 4CD box sets, a 3CD collected, and umpteen greatest hits/best of packages that have been released over the last 40 years or so. and every one have basically the same 12 - 15 core songs of the byrds.

and recently this influx old radio shows in lieu of any new product is just as alarming to me. and i guess that i could take these if they sounded OK, but a couple of the ones i heard were worse than the old boots from back in the day when a guy sat in the crowd with a microphone up his sleeve.

i don't know, i probably shouldn't complain, but i'm getting old and crotchety and i really miss new music by long time heroes, i miss it a lot......when i look at pause and play, and linda's lists of upcoming releases and i see nothing form anyone that i ever remotely care about is truly disheartening.

i've always joked about "doors territory", but "doors territory" is very real....and getting more and more crowded.

sorry for the long post, but i just wanted to clarify myself.

p.s. sorry about your $5 linda, but jimbo will put it to good use and purchase a promo copy of someone's greatest hits CD :)

It seems the "The Ultimate Collection" is the new "Gold" or "Essential" churn with 'more' in the current churn of comps.
I hear ya Renny...
somewhat related is the plethera of Collections of studio albums in the bare bones packaging...I have been picking them up to reduce space...and I have been really pleased with the Jazz related 4 disc sets of say 8 plus albums...for the same reason, as well as to expand on certain artists....
I see these recent developments as value (at a cost of packaging, or in the case of the jazz where albums are split across discs)...obviously no value if already purchased...unless a soft value for the individual collecting.

This is a 3-CD budget set that retails for the equivalent of $10 that I guarantee nobody in the band had anything to do with or probably even knows that it's coming out. To say that this is milking fans or even comparing it to previous box set releases is ludicrous.

This series seems like a great value for someone who is both curious about the band in question & hasn't already gone catalog.

That said, this one is way too heavy on the late period studio country trax & again a quick glance seems to show no rarities. I am catalog on the original band, + all live material, "Untitled" & reunion.

I am not a Gram Parsons fan at all. I LOVE Clarance White live; he seems to be more rock focused live & more country focused in the studio.

Yep. This set is clearly aimed at people who want more than just a single-disc GH, but aren't interested in rarities or outtakes. That's a niche that isn't filled by any current product out there. I imagine this kind of marketing with various types of greatest hits at different price points is what the labels think they need to do in today's market.
