And a great jumping-off point for old fans!
That's how I felt about Crisis on Infinite Earths. It was as if DC was telling me, "You don't have to compulsively buy all our books anymore. We're going to end every storyline at once, AND we'll stop publishing new storylines involving these characters."

I'm okay with this. I really won't impact what I buy. If something looks interesting, I grab it, but I am no longer pulled by the soap opera aspect where I need to read every single issue.
I do hope it isn't a "from scratch" reboot, but really is a merging of the universes where some aspects are kept and others are thrown out. I hope it allows for ignoring some of the most awful retcons by simply never mentioning them again. And I hope it creates a world where Stilt Man is a credible threat once again.

One too few . . .
So the parallel that emerges is DC does huge, linewide adjustments to continuity by variations of it's mid-80's Crisis series, with variations of the word "Crisis" and the involvement of the Monitors.
Marvel does the same thing, only with its mid-80's series Secret Wars and presumably the involvement of the Beyonder.

If the new Universe that results had NO Spider-Man, no Hulk, no Captain America, no Avengers, no X-Men, no Guardians of the Galaxy, no Inhumans, no Big Hero 6 ---- I might believe this stunt.
But we all know that's not going to happen. All the heroes that still make money for Marvel Comics/Disney or who are not tied up in a bitter fight with a rival studio will be in the new Universe. So all of this will be just a reboot.
At one time at iMWAN or another comic book message board, I didn't mind reboots. But now it seems to me like a desperate attention-getting ploy. In other words, wake me up when this is all over.

So basically making movie/Ultimate earth the new Marvel.
Well, yeah.
You mean this is all just a stunt to turn Nick Fury from an ageless WWII veteran to an aging Samuel L. Jackson in the comics?
I assume that in this new universe, there will be no Hank Pym. If a character like Janet Van Dyne as The Wasp emerges, she will be the love interest of Scott Pym thanks to the new movie?

I also assume that Bruce Banner will be given a more heroic origin than in the Ultimates Universe. Nothing against Mark Millar, but if they are tying the comics to the movies, I don't think the Hulk is going to be a cannibal, and Bruce will not have experimented on himself because he "wanted to be big."
But on the other hand, I think we're going to see the "gamma bomb origin" go bye-bye. Banner will simply be a physicist trying to use gamma radiation to activate a prototype of the Captain America WWII Super Soldier serum, and his experiment will go tragically wrong, probably as Banner is trying to save somebody. (But that somebody will more likely be Betty rather than Rick Jones.) The other origins will mostly adhere to what we see in the movies. (If we've seen them in the movies, I don't know if they'll retell them again in the comics.)
