Three Dog Night

Product Description
Three Dog Night exploded as a fully formed unit out of the late sixties Los Angeles club scene. They showcased their talents at the Troubadour to the assembled music industry and a bidding war ensued for their services. Dunhill Records eventually was able to sign the band and they entered the studio to record their first album. The group relied on outside songwriters, which gave them their pick of the cream of material coming out of this very fertile artistic period. In fact their debut album and stage act was peppered with material written by Lennon-McCartney, Steve Winwood, Neil Young, Randy Newman and Robbie Robertson just to name a few!

The album slowly crept up the charts as the singles released did progressively better until the Harry Nilsson penned One reached number 5 on the singles chart catapulting the group and their debut album into the stratosphere. Their constant touring as well as the success of One led to a gold album and the stage was set for their second album to ship gold, but more on that later.

The essay by author Paul Myers draws on interviews with group members and a selected track by track commentary adds further insight into the proceedings. The brilliant new mastering is done by noted engineer Vic Anesini.

1. One
2. Nobody
3. Heaven Is In Your Mind
4. It's For You
5. Let Me Go
6. Chest Fever
7. Find Someone To Love
8. Bet No One Ever Hurt This Bad
9. Don't Make Promises
10. The Loner
11. Try A Little Tenderness

Bonus Tracks:
12. Time To Get Away (Redwood) (Mono)
13. It's For You (Mono Single Version)
14. Try A Little Tenderness (Mono Single Version)

Good to see Iconoclassic still in the game. It's been a long time since their last reissue.

beware grand funk, last time they played around here only don brewer was the one of the original 3/4 and the touring band had 5 members.

just my opinion of course, but grand funk fits into the journey/yes category in that there is one very integral member and without that member it simply is not grand funk.

Disagree, the comparisons don't fit. GFR was only 3 guys (later a 4th w/supplemental keyboard) which Mark Farner could have done in studio. Simply Mark Farner is "the" man. Single handedly lead his group to super stardom.

Yeah, I guess you and Renny are right. As you can see I can get VERY touchy when it comes to Mark Farner.

I have had correspondence with him and he's a very good guy. With all the real tough breaks he and his family has incurred the man's roots are unshakeable. You don't see that kind of faith much anymore.

Just to clarify, Mark Farner is the performer appearing on this tour, not the other guys from Grand Funk. This is the Happy Together tour which Flo & Eddie organize every year or so. John Montagna, the bass player on this tour, has an interesting podcast where last year he talked with several of his tour mates, including Chuck Negron, Gary Puckett and both Flo and Eddie. Maybe he'll snag an interview with Farner this time around.

I'd really like to see TDN bury the hatchet now that Negron is sober & really be 3 DN!

And I would love to see Mark Farner (I am a big Grand Funk fan and have never seen them) but that's the night of my daughters Prom. Daddy needs to take pictures.

We saw the original Grand Funk line-up at the Beacon Theater when the reunited back in 1997 (17 years ago already????) The audience had the highest density of guys with gray ponytails I've ever seen. And while everybody went crazy during "American Band," the old timers in the crowd sat on their hands during "The Locomotion" and "Bad Time."

"Nobody knows the band Grand Funk? The wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The competent drum work of Don Brewer? Oh man...."

I saw GFR sometime in the early 70's Billy Preston opened & also sat in with GF. They did pretty much lose me when they intentionally went top 40 (locomotion, etc), & then Farner went religious.

Early GFR really got a raw deal from the critics. I remember in Jr High (grade 7-9) it was considered so unhip to like them, that I largely kept it to myself that they had 2 or 3 albums I really liked (especially the first double live album). Fact is, Farner is a decent player; but the critics decided he sucked. Uriah Heep got much of the same treatment in the day; again unjustifiably imo.

I saw Grand Funk in 1981 during the "Grand Funk Lives" tour. They played near the Air force base at the Jai-Alai in Tampa with the majority of the fans being service man. And when Mark Farner came out in his fatigues, which he was wearing for the tour, the serviceman when freak'in wild. :headbanger:
And it just got hotter after that. Great night and was really proud of the band! What a show, I'll never forget.

I have the original MCA CDs that are now out of print. They apparently were flat transfers and Hoffman approved at the time.

I've got the 1st gen live at the forum. I prefer it to the Japan SHM, though neither is anywhere near audiophile territory..
