What's the one word I would say about O'Toole's acting? Charisma. That's what is so infuriating about him losing the Best Actor Oscar to Gregory Peck. Peck was not a very expressive actor, and many people would call him "wooden." I don't think in his heydey, anybody ever called O'Toole wooden. If he had a weakness, it was the opposite----not only could O'Toole chew the scenery as well as anybody, but if he was not careful he could also chew the furniture and several of his fellow actors, as well.

I don't think I watched all of his Man of La Mancha because the film makes a HUGE mistake. The producers assumed that O'Toole should play Don Quixote and that the musical was in fact, about Don Quixote. The truth is that the musical is about Miguel de Cervantes who PLAYS his character throughout most of the show. The framing device that shows that the true setting is a 16th century Spanish dungeon ("a place I do not wish to remember") is NOT something that can be casually jetissoned from the movie.
I thought he was great in the last movie I saw him in, Stardust and he was just dying in bed. He always added something, and it was a fun movie, besides.
