Just browsing through Amazon for some trades, which is generally how I keep up, although I'm well over a year behind (behind the trades, which may be like two years behind the monthlies!) I see Marvel has replaced their Ultimate Line with an "Ultimate Comics" line? Did they purposely try to confuse people like myself who are not hard-core collectors, and just like to check in with their characters from time-to-time?
Is this a new continuity, a continuation of the Ultimate continuity or what? What's the story behind this?

It's a continuation of the previous Ultimate continuity. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man is written by Bendis with art by Dave LaFuente, while Ultimate Comics Avengers is by Millar and Pacheco.

Not entirely sure. I think part of it was streamlining things (hence no FF or X-Men ongoing), and a part was the attention that a relaunch would naturally bring to the line, which had declined in sales over the years.

This. The in-Universe explanation have to do with the Ultimatum miniseries, in which Jeph Loeb hilariously raped the Ultimate universe.

And with that I was done with the Ultimate line (and pretty soon all of Marvel as the $2.99 price point is down to only a handful of titles).

One thing I'm glad of -- having "the Avengers." I always thought it was silly branding to have an "Ultimate" line, and then call the Avengers the "Ultimates" in universe.

I've been enjoying the Ultimate Avengers line-up myself but it is a step down from the brilliant work from Ultimates and Ultimates 2 (though a step up to the bafflingly terrible Ultimates 3-- why in the holy fuck did they get Loeb to do that mini instead of Millar?).

I think Sale carries Loeb in their projects. It's the same oversentimental bullshit.

It is, but I like it (for the most part). I would like to see them either team-up on a wholly original project (non-Marvel/DC) or at least tell a modern story in one of the universes.

I think that the Ultimate group of books was designed for and pretty much is a bookstore line. I don't think that the floppies matter as much.
