All this Iron Man exposure this weekend got me thinking about my favorite IM artist Gene Colan.
I googled and found his website:

http://www.genecolan.com/home.html

I poked around and read some interesting stuff and saw some cool art.
Then I went to the section for COMICS COVERS.
Look at it when you can; a thing of absolute beauty.

If the "hot artist" concept had existed back in the 60s and 70s
Genial Gene would certainly be a multi-millionaire today.
Sad that's not the case.
But I'm not here to repeat sad stories, you can find them elsewhere
and help if you're moved to (Google: Clifford Meth).
As the title says, I'm here to praise the stunning beauty of his figures,
the perfect atmosphere of his pencils, and the man himself
who gave me countless hours of joy looking at Iron Man, Sub-Mariner, and Daredevil.
Many thanks to Gene the Dean.

Anybody else have any thoughts or comments.

I think even Frank Brunner would be jealous of that Dr. Strange!

He was an instructor of mine at the School of Visual Arts for two semesters. Very nice man.

He was a "hot" artist for Stan Lee at that time. He worked VERY hard on comics. It was difficult for him to make deadlines.

My Daredevil collection would be pretty hollow without Gene.

Gene "The Dean" Colan has done some great work, particularly on Daredevil. When most people think of DD, they think of Miller, but Colan did some very stylish work on ol' hornhead.

Later, he did some nice work on Batman in the eighties, when many of Marvel's creative folk defected to DC.

Tomb of Dracula was one of the very best horror comics, ever.

My favorite Colan is his Tomb of Dracula, but he did some stellar superhero work, too.

His Iron man really had personality, and I enjoyed his Captain America.

I ran across an extended Colan/Palmer run on Daredevil (perusing my complete DD DVD), and was blown away. Gene Colan is criminally underrated. He was one of the first Marvel artists to bring a cinematic approach to comics.

I don't think I've seen any artist ape Colan's style. Probably because they CAN'T.

He's one of a kind.

I discovered Gene's art very late for a comic book fan - when he moved to DC and became the artist for Batman, Night Force and Wonder Woman. He immediately became my favorite artist and is to this day.

The last time I went to the San Diego Comicon in 2001, there was only ONE artist that I wanted to meet and it was he. He invited me to stand behind him as he drew large commissions and small sketches for fans. It was one of the best memories of my life, watching Gene "the Dean" Colan draw Captain America, Daredevil, and Wonder Woman.

Below are two of the Colan Wonder Woman pages that adorn my studio wall and I can't imagine ever parting with them.
