Why is it everytime Hollywood comes out with a remake or a sequel, everyone in comic land complains about the unoriginality of Hollywood.

Then ten seconds later, on an unrelated thread, talk about how the world really wants a Micronauts relaunch... they just don't know it yet.

It's even more funny to watch creators play this game, complaining about the latest movie update of some "classic" TV show, then announcing their "new" book, which is some 30 year old comic property that has never been successful.

Are comics more creatively bankrupt than Hollywood?

They both follow trends, but comics does it more than movies. And they both have creators who are mostly interested in the movies/comics of their youth, and the way they can do their take on it.

However, I don't worry about it. If I am entertained, great, if not , too bad. Some things i am emotionally connected to and protective of, but I recognize much of that is nostalgia, and that everyone needs their thing too

Take King Kong. I am a big fan of the original. but it is creaky-and there are many, many people, especially young, who won't watch a movie in black and white and with creaky special effects, and not modern characters. So they get to have their King Kong-and the fun of seeing a giant gorilla, and I had loads of fun too, evem if it was bloated.

and you know what? the original isn't replaced, isn't forgotten, instead it gets a spiffy DVD treatment, gets dozens of tv airings, gets several documentaries made about it, and maybe, just maybe, many fans of the new check out the old one, and maybe even like it, when they wouldn't have otherwise. Kinda like when I watched Manchurian Candidate after the remake.

The difference too with comics is that most want to make superheroes, superheroes sell the best, and so, you are going to have repeats. the best ideas are taken. Plus, fans are not firgving these days of new books or characters-they want them to "count" and there isn't enough time to develope a fan based. so there is more pressure in comics to come up with twists on old concepts. Plus, i guess creators are somewhat reluctant to create characters they don't own.

Sure, but it's to be expected, since the majority of comic industry employees nowadays are either Hollywood rejects or Hollywood wannabes.

Sorry, my apologies ~ not Hollywood rejects, I meant "people who love the characters so much they chose to work in comics at 1/100th the income", of course.

A few months ago,I had read in the investment section of a newspaper,a very interesting article about the comic book industry. It stated that the comic book model was a failure because none of the profit would ever be reinvested into the company(a basic "take the money and run" operation). The writer also stated that it is impossible for a character to be popular for decades...and that is why actual numbers of readers have declined.
I do find it interesting that the movie and music industry also blame the fans for their problems.

And the remake didn't have Frank Sinatra doing bad karate!

Well, it really IS all our fault, innit? I mean, how dare we like what we like and not what they tell us to like!

Blaming the customer is what happens when the seller has nothing left which is worth buying.
