U2 RELEASE "LIVE AT RED ROCKS" (FIRST TIME ON DVD WITH BONUS MATERIAL) AND REMASTERED "UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY"

U2's first concert video, Live At Red Rocks, will be released on DVD by Interscope/Island/UME on September 30, 2008 in the U.S., along with the accompanying live album, Under a Blood Red Sky.

The remastered Under a Blood Red Sky album was originally released in November 1983, and consists of live recordings from three shows on the band's War Tour through Europe and America.

A deluxe version featuring the Under a Blood Red Sky CD and the Live At Red Rocks DVD will be available, as well as single disc formats of the CD and DVD. An LP version of Under a Blood Red Sky pressed on 180gm virgin vinyl will also be released.

It SUCKS that they're apparently not expanding the cd. GRR. I guess we'll need to buy the dvd & rip the audio. Grr.

It really doesn't make much sense, does it?

I wonder if it'll be the unedited EP as it originally appeared on vinyl. When it was released on CD a few years later, they edited the "Send In The Clowns" section from "Electric Co." due to publishing issues. In fact, they may have re-pressed the vinyl with this change before it even came out on CD, but I have the original vinyl pressing. I've had trouble listening to it on CD because the edit is so jarring.

Hey, if Peter Criss can record "Send In The Clowns", why not U2?

"Under A Blood Red Sky" was taken from at least three shows, so expanding it would be somewhat arbitrary. As long as it's got the "Send In The Clowns" section from "Electric Co.", I'm happy, since the CD always sounded wrong without it.

The big question is the packaging: will it be like the other remasters?

I hope not.

I'll clarify my question: will the packaging of the Red Sky CD fit inside the limited edition box I got from Amazon for the first three albums? And more to the point, when's "Unforgettable Fire" coming (hopefully with the Wide Awake In America tracks on the bonus disc)?

I posted elsewhere on this, but to update this thread: I got the dvd only version today. Since the cd was missing 1/2 the show & the dvd does have an lpcm cd quality audio option I chose the dvd only. 2 comments: the packaging sucks; the unique case broke the first time I opened it & is going back to best buy. As others have reported, a quick glance shows the video as being a bit grainy, especially in dark scenes.

I was looking at the CD/DVD version at the Virgin Megastore this evening and also noticed that the CD version has the same tracks as the older CD version. Unless you like modern "remastered" sound (usually just made louder), it looks like the DVD version will be good enough for me since its those extra tracks I'm most interested in.

Just got my set yesterday.

The video quality isn't great, but considering the video is 25 years old, and it's video (not film), it is what it is. It is still impoved over the prior option: VHS. :-)

The sound is actually quite good, and the DVD has 5 additional songs on it that were not on the VHS version. Apparently "I Fall Down" was still left out due to technical difficulties during the recording of the show. All snippets of non-U2 songs that might incur a royalty have been cut.

Finally, while a few of the tracks on the CD come from the concert on the DVD, I think about 5 of the 8 are from other performances. It is a shame that the audio of the DVD isn't available as a CD or something, but I predict it will pop up at the digital music stores in a couple months, just like the Live DVD from the Joshua Tree remastered set did.

I'll pull the audio off myself with DVD Audio Extractor. Unfortunately, I have to wait a few days because I bought the Amazon version that will fill out the box set. Has anyone received this from Amazon yet?

That's what I received. Fits into the box very nicely, however crowds out the poster equally nicely.

In my opinion, the audio is pretty good on the dvd, but the lpcm track is really loud (i.e. compressed).

I can't wait to get the U2 DVD (resisted last night at Virgin) but I'm too lazy to drive over to BestBuy ($13.99). :D

Maybe tomorrow.

I may get this at some point, but only the DVD. However, for anyone with Comcast, the Rockpalast show from Germany in the summer of 1983 is on there for free on On Demand in it's entirety and it is awesome. The guitar is mixed a little low, but the show is killer as is the performance and set list-I already burned this with my DVD-R.
Also, on there now is the awesome Thin Lizzy show from Germany in 1981 and an aawesome Stevie ray Vaughn show from 1984. The Lizzy however, is missing a few tunes, but I have that complete on the official DVD that came out overseas. Earlier this summer, they had an Echo & BUnnymen show from 1983-glorious!
Still, people, you should check this stuff out-amazing that they got the rights to this stuff! I hope someone benefits from this post, and that U2 show is easily as good, if not better than Red Rocks.
The U2 setlist is:

Out Of Control
Twilight
En Cat Dubh
Into The Heart
Surrender
Two Hearts Beat As One
Seconds
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Electric Co.
Gloria
New Year's Day
I Will Follow
"40"

InvisiblePedestrian-

Are the "snippets" from other songs edited out of that one also?

By the way, funny classic SNL reference! :-)

Exactly my quandry/beef with the amazon box. While ostensibly intended to fit all 4 CDs, where do you put the bonus poster and filler box if you put Red Sky in the box? I guess I'll end up leaving the box as originally shipped and keep the Red Sky out of it (even though intended to go in it).

I went to Bestbuy today to pick up the U2 DVD but they had none so I ended up with the CD/DVD version (less painful in the wallet as I did have a $20 off certificate). So I guess it will go along with my other U2 remasters. :D

Should have picked up the U2 DVD at Virgin when I had the chance.

On a personal note - most of the tracks on the CD version were recorded on our wedding day, way back on August 20, 1983!

I didn't know this before, but the dvd booklet states that 6 of the 8 songs on the cd are NOT from Red Rocks.
