The problem is DC hasn't got a Batgirl who has stuck with readers since The Killing Joke, and if they
try to restore Babs' ability to walk so she can become Batgirl again, they'd only anger the horde of
Birds of Prey fans that have kept her in that wheelchair. *shrug* A "flashback" miniseries would be
a solution except under current continuity, the Silver Age Supergirl never existed at all after Crisis.
The closest thing DC could come up with now would be a crossover where Supergirl teamed up with
Oracle and Birds of Prey.

After all this time you're right. But it could have been someone else at the start, a new handicapped hero and probably gotten a ton of mainstream acclaim too.

Not going to happen in comics anymore, but what a great cartoon series that would make.

IMLO, if DC cared about publishing truly contemporary comics with these characters, ones that kids would like as well as grown-ups with a taste for this postmodern type of style, they'd be doing Batgirl, Supergirl, Wonder Woman and other super-heroines looking that guy's work you posted above, or the WANderful Colleen Coover:



See, that's the kind of story that even I at my advanced age would want to read, and my students would go nuts for it. It's a lost cause at this point, but this style ... let's include Cooke and Rude ... I think it's modern, professional, and can work for different levels. Looks good for child readers, works well for mature stories, and pretty much everything inbetween.



But as I say, a lost cause. Think indie instead:

Of course, they could do a Batgirl/Supergirl series NOW---it's just that the current Batgirl would be Cassandra Cain or Stephanie Brown? (I'm going by Wikipedia, since I have no clue what's going on in the DCU.) Funny how DC tries to have it both ways. Batgirl hasn't been Barbara Gordon in the comics for over two decades, but for the general public who doesn't read comic books she's still Batgirl---and DC has done nothing to let them think otherwise.

Stephanie is the new Batgirl.
Her stories are okay: dealing mainly with her trying to be a college student by day,
and an adventuress at night. Not so weird then, that she oversleeps. Plus, mix in
some friends, including the current Supergirl (for one issue)), Proxy (who is in a wheelchair
—and who is, I think, the DC's take on Wendy from the Super Friends?, and daughter of the
Calculator), and some attempts at romance.

I signed on mainly because Babs Gordon was featured at the beginning of the series, but they
have been working, it seems, at replacing her.

The stories are lighter in tone than most comics today, which is to its credit. The last issue
was a little weird and fun: she teams up with Clarion the Witchboy for a Valentine's issue.

A younger, more female audience might like the book, but I can't imagine how they would
ever heard about it, let alone find it.

Dean is awesome! I met him at ECCC last year and had a nice hour long chat. Super nice and dedicated father and fan. I've got a nice Captain America from him and am awaiting a superman and a Batman commission.
