I spent some time looking around the Mike's Amazing World of DC site. He has a section on there tabulating the number of issues DC published each year since 1935.
People wonder why single books aren't getting the sales they used to? I'd say it's partly due to the amount of competition. Similar to why one network isn't getting the ratings it once did when you figure a network is now competing with 300+ other networks as opposed to just three.
In 1980 DC published 335 issues. In 2005 they published 1,279!
