There is to be a 2CD Deluxe Edition of The Who Sell Out release for January 2009. Disc one will have the stereo mix with bonus tracks. Disc two will have the mono mix and more bonus tracks. "Lots of previously unheard material" says Matt Kent who got a preview. One of the bonus tracks is "Sodding About" an instrumental for an unreleased instrumental EP the band recorded in 1967.

TheOx

Image

Originally released in December 1967, The Who Sell Out arrived at the tail end of a remarkable year in popular culture. As well as being forever immortalised as the moment when the counterculture and the "Love Generation" went global, 1967 produced tremendous musical upheavals as "pop" metamorphosed to "rock", elevating the likes of Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, Traffic and the West Coast groups to prominence--both on the underground scene and the commercial arena. The homage to pop-art is evident in both the advertising jingles and the iconic sleeve design--created by David King (art director at the Sunday Times) and Roger Law (who invented Spitting Image) producing four giant images for each band member--Odorono deodorant, Medac spot cream, Charles Atlas and Heinz baked beans. This remastered edition of Sell Out features the following:

• Stunning reissue of the classic Who album from 1967, now upgraded to a greatly expanded 2 CD version in the acclaimed Deluxe edition range.

• Remastered from the original stereo and mono masters for the first time.

• The first official re-release of the mono mix (in the US and UK) since 1967

• Eleven previously unreleased songs and/or mixes.

• 28-page booklet contains unseen photos and 1960s period advertisements. CD sleeve features out-takes from the original October 1967 album cover photo session by David Montgomery, the esteemed portrait photographer.

• Introductory essay by noted rock writer Dave Marsh and in-depth liner notes by Who biographer Andy Neill.

How about something that hasn't been remastered or expanded before, like the Magic Bus cd? What a novel idea, something new.

The "Magic Bus" album was not The Who's idea. It was Decca being impatient for an overdue "Tommy". "They have lived to regret it, but not delete it" says Pete Townshend.

Whatever happened to the career spanning live box set that was talked about shortly after 30 Years Of Maximum R & B came out .Back in about 1996 I remember reading that Pete was hard at work on it . I wish it would see the light of day . This would be a treat .

Ox,
Thanks for passing this along to us. I'm going to get this one. I'm going to need to determine, for a different mastering (or mix) perspective, if I need to keep my old expanded single disc remaster or not. This concerns the stereo mix.

Didn't they sorta do this, with the "View From A Backstage Pass" fanclub-only, double-CD set? Anything put out for the mass market after this is likely to have a big issue with duplication of tracks, given the realtive dearth of good multi-track sources (or at least multi-tracks we know of, and have heard...)

Anybody know what happened to the QUADROPHENIA deluxe reissue that Pete was supposedly working on like 10 years ago? I keep waiting for news on that one!

Four years later, I'm still waiting for the "Second" singles box.

If this is true...it might possibly be the greatest "deluxe edition" ever.

Yeah, it's for real. To be released in mid-March. It was first reported on the Steve Hoffman forum by Marc Roberty, a music historian known for his sessionography book on the career of Eric Clapton.

It's now on the Deluxe Edition(2-SACD) edition of "Tommy".
Be cautioned that the expanded "Odds & Sods" claims to use that version of "Young Man Blues" but uses an alternate take from the same session(but at its' true running speed).
The version of "Young Man Blues" from "The House That Track Built" was intentionally sped up during mixdown.

I'll have to compare the Tommy version to the House That Track Built version when I get home tonight. I always enjoy a good reason to crank up the turntable!!!

Has anybody noticed that Amazon is now listing this deluxe edition with a release date of March 17th--and apparently only as a $36.98 import? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001QBC4AG/?tag=imwan-20

Even though CD Universe is located in the next town...I have converted to Amazon...BUT in this case...

CD Universe claims to have this for $ 25.34 - I expect to be back-ordered come Tuesday

Between this and the new Nick Lowe and the 3 Stooges Vol. 5 - s/b a pretty good week of new releases...
