Oh good, I only have 10 or 12 (or 15) other Rod Stewart CD comps already. Now, if the DVD has a whole bunch more videos than the old Storyteller DVD, then I'm interested.

P.S. Amazon gives the label as "World Entertainment"--what the hell is that?

To heck with another CD. Give us a definitive video collection in 5.1 sound.

That might just be the distributor's name. Amazon sometimes lists releases by distributor or wholesaler initially, then it changes to the actual music label as it gets closer to the release date. FWIW, the Japanese pressing of this release is currently showing as a Rhino release (don't bother to get it though, it's not showing any extra tracks). So at the very least this compilation should be of legitimate quality and not some no-name label junk. We shall see, though.

Okay Jimbo, I have confirmation on this now ~ it will be a Rhino release here in the States.

Gawd, how many songs will it include from his Great American Songbook series?
I love Rod, but I'll take a pass on this one. I wish he'd make a real rock album again, even another like "When We Were The New Boys".

Rod seems to be chasing The Doors, Beach Boys, Skynyrd, The Who etc for most comps.

For me, a definitive Rod Stewart collection doesn't go past the "Never A Dull Moment" album.

OK, feeling better now. If it's Rhino, it'll probably focus on the WB years, but will have to include some of the Mercury hits and probably a couple of tracks from the songbooks.

Like John, I'd be more interested in a good DVD collection at this point.

I'll take it to 1988. And not a song past.

I know there's not a lot of love for those songbook CDs on this board but I have to confess they are in that very small group of albums that my wife and I can both enjoy (...or at least tolerate together!).

Have you sight of the tracklist?
A few months ago Rod's management promised that in addition to the hits, this release would feature previously unreleased material from the vaults so there is significant interest & anticipation amongst fans around what may feature.
Ideally, one of the two CD's would have all "new" material, but we may have to settle for a handful. We know that there are plenty of songs recorded over the years that have never come out.
It being on Rhino augers well but previous Rod compilations have been poor value in terms of bonus material..
The Warner/Rhino factor reduces the likelihood of any Songbook contamination.

BTW, a collectors edition of Unplugged..and Seated is also in the works.
If this follows Rhino's normal format we might see tracks done at the concert but not released such as Joking, Georgie and Forever Young.

A number of Unplugged recordings that didn't make the original album showed up as b-sides on various CD singles. "Have I Told You Lately" featured a beautiful unplugged rendition of "Gasoline Alley." An expanded edition of the album would be most welcome.

"It's all over now" and "Sweet little rock'n'roller" also made it out as b'sides - so between b'sides and unreleased tracks there are at least six additions to be made to the 15 on the album.
Rod also messed up Georgie at the first attempt and stopped after a minute or so and started again, so that could be another (short) track along with the banter with Woodie that was edited last time out.
Not to mention the the joke from a woman in the audience at which there was some polite / uncomfortable laughter (How do you know if a woman is ticklish?...give her a test tickle)

With regard to the use of Definitive in the title... how can a two cd compilation by someone with such a large body of work be called definitive in a meaningful way :o

Word now is that there is only one previously unreleased track on the compilation.

If this is true it shows, yet again, the complete disregard that Warner/Stiefel/Stewart have for his fans all of whom will already own every other track on this release. I can name about 30 tracks that could have been used.

There is no excuse. Why bother release it when The Story So Far is still selling well enough and Joe Public is hardly going to buy both Story and Definitive?

Sickened, disappointed, but not surprised.

I’m not sure that I follow all of the blasting of this set. There are not that many collections of the Warner era. There was a GH hits decades ago followed by a box set nearly 20 years ago now, and a modern once disc best followed by another single disc of left over hits, which together would make a nice two disc collection. I remember a ballad collection too, but really I don’t see this as a lot. Now if we’re talking about his early years, yeah definitely too many…

The gripe really is that Rod's management actually promised earlier this year that the album would feature never heard before gems from the vaults. One track doesn't really suggest that they went beyond the doorway of the vault..

Thanks to Heath on the Smiler website (and now confirmed by rostewart.com)

The track list is out. One new track Two Shades of Blue from the New Boys sessions.
29 other well-known tracks. None from J records era. Very much an American bias in the '80's and '90's tracks - no sign of big UK hits such as Every Beat, It takes two or What am I gonna do.
The release shares 22 tracks with 2001's Story so far and almost all of them are on 1989's Storyteller.
The DVD looks interesting.
I've highlighted the most important sentence for me in the press release - there is more to come. :)

The Definitive Rod Stewart
Warner Bros. will be launching an extensive reissue campaign of Rod Stewart‘s legendary catalog, beginning with the November 18 release of The Definitive Rod Stewart, which spans material recorded between 1971 and 2004, and will be available in two versions: a standard two-CD edition and a deluxe edition that includes a bonus DVD of music videos.

Arranged chronologically, Rod’s early solo years are represented by several cuts ("Maggie May" "You Wear It Well") from the unforgettable classics, Every Picture Tells A Story (1971) and Never A Dull Moment (1972). The opening disc also includes “Stay With Me,” a nod to Stewart’s time with the Faces. The second half of the disc shifts to Stewart’s Warner Bros. years with the stadium-swooning ballad, “Sailing,” the #1 smash “Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright),” the Top 10 hit “You’re In My Heart” and “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” from the #1 album Blondes Have More Fun (1978).

The second disc concentrates on music Stewart made during the ’80s and ’90s, including “Infatuation,” “Some Guys Have All The Luck,” “Love Touch,” “Forever Young” and a previously unreleased track entitled “Two Shades Of Blue,” recorded in 1998 during the When We Were The New Boys session.

The deluxe version of The Definitive Rod Stewart features a bonus DVD with 14 music videos for some of Rod’s most beloved songs. Spanning 1975 to 1998, the video collection includes some never-before or rarely seen videos such as “Sailing,” “The Killing of Georgie (Part I & II)” from A Night On The Town and “She Won’t Dance With Me,” along with MTV-era staples like “Hot Legs,” “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy,” “Young Turks,” amongst others. There's so many B-sides, and rare stuff that could be added to something like this. Something along the lines of a rarities disc shoulda been added, like the 3 disc "Essential Bruce Springsteen".
Off hand I can think of:

"That's What Friends Are For" from the "Nightshift" S/T
"The Great Pretender" omitted from the CD release of "Absolutely Live"
"Guess I'll Always Love You" same as above
"Twistin' The Night Away" remake from the "Innerspace" S/T
"Days of Rage" B-side of "Forever Young"
"The Motown Song" remix
"Sweet Soul Music" B-side of "Motown Song"
"Gasoline Alley" B-side of "Have I Told You Lately", Part 1
"Let The Day Begin" Same as above
"Love Wars" B-side of "Have I Told You Lately", Part 2
"One Night" Same as above
"Shock to the System" B-side of "Leave Virginia Alone"
"Stand Back" "Lead Vocalist" import CD
"Ruby Tuesday" Same as above
"Shotgun Wedding" Same
"First I Look at the Purse" Same
"Tom Traubert's Blues" (studio vers) Same
"The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar" B-side of "This"
"Faith of the Heart" from the "Patch Adams" S/T
"Peach" B-side of "I Can't Deny it"
"Do Wah Diddy" Same as above

There's 21 songs right there...

Jeff
