Gorillaz start work on third album
Damon Albarn announces plans for the cartoon band's new album

September 20, 2008

Blur's Damon Albarn and animator Jamie Hewlett are set to begin work on a new Gorillaz album.

The pair also revealed that the release may see a new visual look for the animated band.

Damon Albarn stated that there would be no more Gorillaz albums last year, but has now told CBC that he has already begun work on the album.

"We're doing another Gorillaz record," explained the songwriter. "We came back from summer holidays and realized we could do exactly what we wanted to do with Gorillaz. Essentially, Jamie just had to agree to draw the characters again. 'Cause I just do what I do anyway."

"I'm so fucking bored of drawing those characters," added Hewlett. "But then we had a moment where we had a new angle on it."

"We're not entirely certain [what it will be like]; we generally just go with our gut," said Albarn. "I dunno. We are obtuse and quite abstract, really. We play a game but it's not strictly the game. Sometimes it really works and sometimes... Actually, usually it really works."

The forthcoming third album will be the follow-up to 2005's 'Demon Days' and 2001's self-titled album.

Gorillaz to kick off third album with 'Syrian sessions' this March
Damon Albarn previews new songs on Zane Lowe takeover

January 15, 2009
http://www.nme.com/news/gorillaz/42081

Gorillaz mainmen Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett are set to start recording sessions on their third album in March - despite jokingly splitting up live on radio last night (January 14).

The pair confirmed work on the follow-up to 2005's 'Demon Days' would begin in earnest with a collaboration in Syria.

Filling in for BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, who is on holiday, Albarn played two Gorillaz demos as he guest hosted the show with Steve Lamacq.

"I'm going to Syria because I've got a real fascination with Arabic orchestral music," explained the frontman. "We're going at the end of March for Gorillaz."

He then played a rough demo of 'Electric Shock' - a track he had previously debuted live at the London leg of Africa Exprez last year - a song which mixed end-of-the-pier Wurlitzer organs with Arabic rhythms, beats and a vocal from female band member "Noodle" which repeated the title.

"It's rough and not finished by any means, but hopefully people will enjoy it," explained Albarn of the demo, adding that he had started writing the song several months ago. "I come back to a song a lot of times, but six months is the maximum [amount of time I spend on a track], it's hard to tell when a song's finished."

He played a second Gorillaz' demo, 'Broken', with the rough cut of the spacey track triggering the band's mock split.

"I'm not sure we should have played that, I'm leaving the band," joked artist and collaborator Hewlett on air. "I'm going to join Johnny Boring from Razorlight!"

It was not the only time the Razorlight leader was the subject of a Gorillaz dig, as earlier with their cartoon "leader" "Murdoc Niccals" performing a special version of the band's 'America'.

"The joy of been in Gorillaz is that you can collaborate with any pop star you like," explained the cartoon brut. "Damon's stuff is alright, but Razorlight is proper music. This is my mate Johnny Borrell, Bozzer as I call him. Anyway I've been learning some new instruments, this is 'America'."

The former UK Number One single was then augmented with a series of duck calls, hooters and whistles, with Murdoc noting "That's how it should sound!"

The takeover also boasted highlights from Blur's 1997 sessions with legendary DJ John Peel at his home Peel Acres, a selection of Albarn's favourite music, plus details of Murdoc's new reality TV series for "ITV 43" - 'Britain's Got Talons', which he boasted would feature birds of prey doing impressions.

Damon Albarn's Zane Lowe takeover can be heard again now at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/zanelowe.

New Gorillaz album not likely until 2010
Manager says Damon Albarn has a 'plethora of tracks' though

May 15, 2009
http://www.nme.com/news/gorillaz/44682

Damon Albarn has enough material for two new Gorillaz albums – but his manager has warned fans not to expect a new release until next year.

The prolific musician is keeping busy with his animated hip-hop project alongside this year's Blur reunion.

But his manager Chris Morrison told BBC 6Music that it isn't yet clear when or how they would be released. "He's got a plethora of tracks at the moment," he said. "Whether they all make the light of day or get refined and come down to a normal amount you get on a record of ten to 15 tracks, I can't tell at this point in time. It's far too early in the stage of what we are doing."

Morrison said that he did not want to rush Albarn with the creative process. "It'll come round when it's ready and when it's been finished and when he's happy with what he's done," he said. "There is no point putting art around schedules, you put schedules round art and what you need first of all is Damon's music.

"The plan for the new Gorillaz album is we'll wait until Damon's finished recording it. The thing is, it's formulating at the moment and it's going to be out in about a year's time, I hope. I'm probably pre-empting something I'll get shouted at for."

Gorillaz' last album, 'Demon Days', was released in May 2005.

De La Soul to invite Damon Albarn onto next album
Plus, hip-hop legends to contribute to new Gorillaz album

May 29, 2009

De La Soul have said that they hope to recruit Damon Albarn to contribute to their forthcoming album.

The hip-hop veterans, who worked with the Blur man on the Gorillaz' 2005 single 'Feel Good Inc', said they have just finished contributing to a couple of tunes to the new Gorillaz album, which is tentatively titled 'Plastic Beach', according to De La Soul's Posdnuos, and they hope Albarn will return the favour.

Posdnuos told Entertainment Weekly that the new Gorillaz tracks they worked on are titled 'Sloped Tropics' and 'Electric Shock', and added that the cartoon band's latest effort "sounds amazing. To me, quite honestly, it sounds better than the last album," he said.

Damon Albarn enlists The Horrors for new Gorillaz album
Plus Albarn has mixed a Horrors song

September 1, 2009
http://www.nme.com/news/gorillaz/47069

Damon Albarn has enlisted The Horrors to work on a song for the forthcoming new Gorillaz album, it has been revealed.

The Blur frontman got in touch with the black-clad London band and invited them to work in his studio, 13, Horrors bassist Rhys Webb told BBC 6music.

Webb explained how Albarn got in touch by emailing them after hearing their second album, 'Primary Colours', which was released earlier this year.

"It was kind of a strange email saying, 'Would you guys be able to come down to my studio at some point?'," he explained.

He added: "We had no idea really what it was about but thought that would be great to go down there, have a chat, it would be nice to meet him.

"We went down to the studio and he said, 'We're working on the new album and we've not collaborated with a guitar band before and your album is one of the most exciting things I've heard in a long time. Would you be up for working on a track?'.

"They [Albarn and partner Jamie Hewlett] have always been diverse and experimental and I think as a band moving forwards, that's very much they way we approach music."

Webb also revealed that Albarn mixed a version of their song 'Whole New Way', which is set for future release as a single. The third Gorillaz album is expected to be released next year.

Damon Albarn names Gorillaz album, takes on 'The X Factor'
Plus former Blur man readies other projects for next year

November 30, 2009
http://www.nme.com/news/gorillaz/48632

Image

Damon Albarn has revealed Gorillaz' third album will be called 'Plastic Beach'.

Speaking to Paul Morley, he explained the album is nearly finished – and he has plenty of other projects that are also nearer fruition.

He said: "This whole Gorillaz album, 'Plastic Beach', which is nearly finished now, started off as 'Carousel'. [It's] sort of about the mythical aspects of Britain. Obviously, because it's Gorillaz we've moved it to a different place, but it still maintains a lot of that melancholy."

Albarn explained in the Guardian interview that his intention was to make a very pop record in reaction to The X Factor's domination of the genre.

"I'm making this album the most pop record I've ever made in many ways, but with all my experience to present something with some depth to it," he said.

"I've tried to connect pop sensibility with trying to make people understand the essential melancholy of buying a ready made meal in loads of plastic packaging. People who watch X Factor might have some emotional connection to these things, that detritus that accompanies what seems the most essential thing in people's lives these days, the celebrity, the voyeurism."

The album, which is due out next year, will feature the Syrian National Orchestra – "I've done so much orchestra stuff for it, and I'm only going to use a fraction of it," he explained – while Albarn admitted he was unable to get legendary crooner Engelbert Humperdinck involved, admitting "you win some and you lose some".

Alongside Gorillaz, Albarn explained that his next project will be with graphic novelist Alan Moore on a commission for the Royal Opera House, plus he is "making an album with Tony Allen and Flea which I've nearly finished, hopefully the end of this year… and I'd like to do another The Good, The Bad & The Queen album if we get the chance, because we’re all really good friends".

Gorillaz set to 'hijack' NME Radio with 'pirate show'?
'Murdoc' users Twitter to threaten our airwaves

January 21, 2010
http://www.nme.com/news/gorillaz/49351

Gorillaz look set to "hijack" NME Radio this afternoon (January 21).

The cartoon creations of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, who revealed details of their third album 'Plastic Beach' yesterday (20), claim they will over ride the station's regular programming with a "pirate show".

To tune in, head to Sky Channel 0184, Virgin Media 975, Freesat 727, DAB nationwide or NME.COM/radio.

The band made their intention to hijack the station via a tweet from 'frontman' Murdoc Niccals at Twitter.com/MurdocGorillaz, in which he claims he is stranded on Plastic Beach, an artificial island which is "the most deserted spot on the planet", with just a radio transmitter to keep him company.

Warning of his possible takeover he initially tweeted: "Ok folks. Think I've got this transmitter to work, now I need a radio station to hi-jack. I’ll be beaming out my venomous poison any day now."

He has since added: "NME has a radio station? Interesting. I thought they were just a paper merchant. Still, they’ll do. Perfect! I might be doing them a favour if I scramble their broadcast.…They must be getting bored of playing The Smiths by now."

Tune in now to see if Gorillaz make good on their threats.

Gorillaz' Murdoc 'hijacks' NME Radio to play Horrors, Dead Weather
Plus cartoon frontman promises new band material

January 21, 2010
http://www.nme.com/news/gorillaz/49355

Gorillaz frontman Murdoc Niccals has 'hijacked' NME.COM/radio this afternoon (January 21) to play records by The Horrors and The Dead Weather.

At around 3pm (GMT) the cartoon creation interrupted the station to broadcast from 'Plastic Beach' – also the title of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's creation's forthcoming new album.

He introduced the hijacking by saying, "Hello world, I'm back! Back! Live on air! It's me, Murdoc Niccals. Broadcasting from my brand new stinking palace of sin. This is me, the Gorillaz king."

He played The Horrors's 'Sea Within A Sea', The Dead Weather's 'Treat Me Like Your Mother' and Le Tigre's 'This Island', then promised to play new Gorillaz songs soon.

"I have got some brand new Gorillaz tracks," he said. "Get on that. Brand new unreleased Gorillaz. But not yet. I'm going to find the right track to pull out of the stocking."

To tune in, head to Sky Channel 0184, Virgin Media 975, Freesat 727, DAB nationwide or NME.COM/radio.

One of the strangest concerts that I ever attended was The Gorlllaz at the Hammerstein Ballroom. The band played behind a screen the length of the stage while the cartoon characters were projected on to the screen. The showed ended with the screen rising to reveal the band and then the Wu-Tang Clan came out for the encore.

Gorillaz's Lou Reed 'collaboration' leaks online
See what Velvet Underground man would look like as a cartoon

An original Jamie Hewlett picture marking Lou Reed's collaboration with Gorillaz has leaked online.

Although the cartoon version of The Velvet Underground man, pictured, was not sanctioned by the singer, NME.COM understands it is the artist's take on how Reed would fit into the group's world.

Reed features on 'Some Kind Of Nature' on the band's third album 'Plastic Beach', which is released on March 8.

The image initially leaked on unofficial fan site Gorillaz-unofficial.com.

Gorillaz's Murdoc Niccals plays 'Plastic Beach' songs during NME Radio hijack
Fictional frontman is a bit fuzzy on track titles though…

February 3, 2010
http://www.nme.com/news/gorillaz/49570

Image

Gorillaz's Murdoc Niccals has 'hijacked' NME.COM/radio for the second time in two weeks, and today (February 3) premiered unreleased tracks from the cartoon band's forthcoming album, 'Plastic Beach'.

Murdoc took to the airwaves at 3pm (GMT), saying that once again he was "broadcasting from the most deserted spot on the planet" and that the name of his station was Point Nemo FM. His first hijacking of NME Radio took place on January 21, and saw him play the likes of The Horrors and The Dead Weather.

In today's show he announced that he had something extra special to play listeners. "Next track here is from the new Gorillaz album… you're so lucky!" he said, before stating that he was thinking of calling the track 'Pink Stinkfish'.

After playing roughly 30 seconds of the song, Murdoc interrupted it, saying: "I can't call that 'Pink Stinkfish'… I can't, I just can't do that! You can't do it, can you?"

He then played a selection of tracks by other bands, including 'Plastic Man' by The Kinks, after which he previewed a second unreleased Gorillaz track.

"So I've got another treat coming up for you, believe it or not," Murdoc said, before boasting that Gorillaz's new album is "the best of the 12 that we've done". He then played an instrumental snippet of the new track, initially saying it was to be called 'The House Of The Pinky Stinkfish' (but then admitting he might change it).

Murdoc ended his show with Jim Carroll's 'People Who Died', after which he hinted that he would be back in the near future.

"Next time, next week, I'll be doing another show broadcasting on Point Nemo FM," he said, adding: "I'll be able to tell you who's collaborated on all those tracks, and more…"

Murdoch Niccals played the following tracks on his NME.COM/radio hijacking:

April March – 'Chick Habit'
Beach Boys – 'Sail On Sailor'
Gorillaz – 'Pink Stinkfish'
The Gap Band – 'Burn Rubber On Me'
The Kinks – 'Plastic Man'
Gorillaz - 'The House Of The Pinky Stinkfish'
Jim Carroll – 'People Who Died'

Gorillaz' Murdoc Niccals has premiered new tracks from the cartoon band's forthcoming album 'Plastic Beach' on NME Radio this afternoon (February 16).

Niccals took over the station for the third time in as many weeks and again played a selection of his favourite tracks, including Blondie ('Island of Lost Souls') and Jay-Z ('Empire State Of Mind').

After playing Gustav Holst's 'Neptune The Mystic' from his 'Planets' collection, Niccals played a snippet of new a Gorillaz track sung by Damon Albarn, which he joked was to be called 'Stink Fish'.

Later on in the broadcast, another new Gorillaz track was played, though Niccals again gave it a jokey title – 'Salmon On Rye With No Title To Go'. Featuring Mos Def, the track was faded out by Niccals after roughly 30 seconds.

Before ending his hijacking, Niccals promised to return to the airwaves next week, when he said he'll be joined by Gorillaz member 2D – who resembles Albarn – for the show.

Niccals played:

Gustav Holst – 'Neptune The Mystic'
Gorillaz – 'Stink Fish'
The Stranglers – 'The Raven'
Jay-Z – 'Empire State Of Mind'
The Rolling Stones – '2000 Light Years From Home'
Gorillaz (featuring Mos Def and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble) – 'Salmon On Rye With No Title To Go'
Blondie – 'Island Of Lost Souls'
The Moontrekkers – 'Night Of The Vampire'
Erika Eigen – 'I Want To Marry A Lighthouse Keeper'

To tune in, head to Sky Channel 0184, Virgin Media 975, Freesat 727, DAB nationwide or NME.COM/radio.

Gorillaz reveal first glimpse of comeback 'Stylo' video
Plus Murdoc explains how he ended up on 'Plastic Beach'

Gorillaz have revealed the first image from their comeback video.

The film for new single 'Stylo' was created by Jamie Hewlett and is set to appear for the first time ever on YouTube at 5am (GMT) on March 2.

Ahead of the premiere, the band have given NME.COM an exclusive peek at the video, pictured.

The video follows the cartoon creations' spiritual leader Murdoc as he escapes the mainland in a car chase with his bandmates and ends up on 'Plastic Beach', where the new album of the same name – out March 8 – is set.

"Someone was chasing me through the desert! Luckily I had my camera crew following me and they captured it all on film, so I've cut it up and stuck it back together for my 'Stylo' video," declared Murdoc. "That'll learn me not to leave the safe, toxic, isolated haven of 'Plastic Beach'."

For more on the video head to http://www.gorillaz.com.

Not sure if I like Stylo. It sounds a lot more AOR and less alternative than their previous hits.
