Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham will release his fifth solo album [title]Gift of Screws[/title] on September 16h on Reprise. The album is his first since 2006's acoustically focused 'Under The Skin'. Primarily recorded and self-produced at his home studio and on the road during the 'Under The Skin' tour, the album also features two songs co-produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance). Mixing the immediacy of the best of his contributions to Fleetwood Mac with experimental production flourishes, highlights of the set include 'Bel Air Rain', 'Time Precious Time', 'Underground, 'Love Runs Deeper' and 'Treason'. "You could certainly say this album is a distillation of a number periods of time, some false starts to make albums, certainly some songs that go back a number of years, that took a while to find a home here, combined with brand-new songs and a whole other outlook," explains Buckingham. "And the fact that there was a kind of tenacity and focus to want to bring all of this together in one place. The fact that as an artist I'm still, for better or worse, clinging to my idealism and to my sense that there is still yet much to be said. This is a culmination of that." "The first one was more of a boutique kind of album," he adds by way of comparing 'Under The Skin' with 'Gift of Screws'. "It's almost like the opening act and then the headline act in terms of the kind of approach. Here I'm bringing to bear many more aspects of what I can do - guitar solos, just rocking a lot more in addition to the other things. It does rock more! And they do seem to complement each other." The album also features the unmistakable sound of the Fleetwood Mac rhythm section, as John McVie and Mick Fleetwood contribute to several songs including the title-track and 'Wait For You'.

1. Great Day
2. Time Precious Time
3. Did You Miss Me
4. Wanna Wait For You
5. Love Runs Deeper
6. Bel Air Rain
7. The Right Place To Fade
8. Gift Of Screws
9. Underground
10. Treason

I wonder if this is the actual Gift Of Screws, or maybe Lindsey's re-cycling the title for an album of new material. Some of the songs for the original album ended up on Fleetwood Mac's Say You Will album.

I think.

Well, here are some minor details which appeared in a Billboard article that stevef posted in the Fleetwood Mac thread on our General board a few months back:

Buckingham, meanwhile, is also planning another solo album -- the follow-up to 2006's "Under the Skin" -- for this summer. Recorded with members of his touring band as well as Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, it "has a little more of a rock feel to it" than "Under the Skin," according to Buckingham. "It's just another group of tunes that hopefully will translate to stage, and hopefully we can get some more (solo) dates this summer."

Formerly signed to Reprise, Buckingham says he's a "free agent" now, without a label deal as a solo artist. "We're gonna figure out who wants to put it out," he says of the as-yet untitled album. "I'm keeping an open mind. People need to hear the music and we'll see what they think and what the best situation for it will be."

Amazon is showing the new album as a Warner Bros release ... maybe this is the original Gift Of Screws and it finishes off his Warner/Reprise deal?

the first time that "gift of screws" was to be released ( about 3 or 4 years ago) it kept getting delayed and delayed to the point that people were comparing it to "archives" if i'm not mistaken, (jay will help me out on this).

then.... all kinds of songs got leaked out on the internet and there were aberrations of it floating around all over the place. i'm pretty sure that copies even showed up on ebay.

then.... some of it ended up on "say you will" and some of it on "under the skin" and "gift of screws" never did come out.

so we'll see this time, and it will interesting if all the original songs are on there or if it has changed completely.

Renny,

You've got it correct. There were a couple of promo discs released long before the releases of Say You Will and Under The Skin that each had a track that was supposedly from Lindsey's upcoming solo album -- his "solo" version of "Peacekeeper" (before it was latter overdubbed for release on Fleetwood Mac's Say You Will album) on one and "Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind" on the other.

Maybe this is one of the aberrations. I picked this up on ebay a couple of years ago.

If I remember the chronology correctly, I think the original "Gift Of Screws" even pre-dates "The Dance" album and tour, which Warner Bros. rejected. The original "Steal Your Heart Away" (sans Stevie and Christine) was featured on a Best Buy promo CD that was released in conjunction with supporting that tour. It also contained "Twisted" from the "Twister" soundtrack and some "solo" songs by Christine, John and Mick (as well as interview sound clips). Based on his comments promoting the last album, this may simply be a case of recycling the title. He also indicated it would be a full-band rock album, and it seems most of the original "Gift Of Screws" songs have seen the light of day on other releases.

The boots (like the one in Ron's post) include no fewer than 3 Stones' covers. I'd love to get those on a legit release.

So I'm guessing that it's still worth it to track down a boot copy of the original "Gift of Screws", then?...

Looks like only the title track remains from the original version.

Jimmy: you're correct on the chronology. The sessions for Lindsey's solo album are what eventually led to the Fleetwood Mac reunion for The Dance album and tour, and I had almost forgotten about "Steal Your Heart Away" having come out on that Best Buy promo CD. So that's a total of 3 tracks from Lindsey's supposedly forthcoming solo album that were released on promos well in advance of their release on Say You Will and Under The Skin.

Finally found an image of the other promo CD, put together for the 2000 ACLU Bill of Rights Award Dinner, on the page below which also serves as a compilation of information on the aborted Gift of Screws album:

http://www.fleetwoodmac-uk.com/albums/gos/GOS.html

Lindsey's solo version is listed as "Peace Keeper".

FLEETWOOD MAC REUNITE IN THE STUDIO

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham has enlisted the help of band members Mick Fleetwood and drummer John McVie on at least two of the tracks for his forthcoming fifth 'solo' album 'Gift of Screws.'

The three of them have worked on tracks, including the album's title track and one called "Wanna Wait For You."

Buckingham, who earlier this year spoke of the possibility of a Mac reunion tour in 2009, has commented on his forthcoming album, saying: "This album distills several periods of time. It has false starts to make albums, songs that go back a number of years that took a while to find a home and brand-new songs. I wanted to bring it all together in one place. As an artist I'm still, for better or worse, clinging to my idealism and to my sense that there is still much to be said. This album is a culmination of that."

Gift of Screws was originally titled way back in 2001, after songs were being written and recorded between 1995 and 2000. Some of the tracks were orignially recorded live by Fleetwood Mac and subsequently used on The Dance tour.

There is no more comment on news of a full band reunion tour, but recording together is a pretty auspicious start.

Of course, the question is when Mick and John's contributions were recorded! In 1997 through 2001 or in 2008?

For anyone planning on going to a Lindsey show this year, you can get a free copy of 'Gift of Screws" when you purchase 2 tickets online. Here are the details: http://www.warnerbrosrecords.com/buckinghamcd-faq/

I think he also did the same thing with "Under the Skin".

Top 10 album for 2008, for sure. The guitar on "Time Precious Time" gives me goosebumps.

I found one song I really liked, Right To Fade. Wait For You is decent. The rest just don't do it for me. Seems like there are always one or two really strong tracks on his solo recordings, the rest just ho hum.

have to say i like it a lot. a little "busy" in places, but that's what lindsey does.

and it sounds a hell of a lot better than fleetwood mac's "say you will", i was afraid it was going to be as badly mastered as that one since lindsey did them both.

renny

p.s. i wonder what happened on 'say you will", buckingham has to know it sounds like shit, he's too good not to.
