Strokes drummer readies side-project album

Jul 17, 2008

The Strokes drummer Frabrizio Moretti is working on a new album with his side project -- a collaboration with his girlfriend, Binki Shapiro.

Also playing in the band is their friend, Brazilian singer-guitarist Rodrigo Amarante, formerly of Los Hermanos.

The band's tentative name is Little Joy, which is also the name of a popular dive bar in the Echo Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

The album is slated for an autumn release on Rough Trade in the US, and is reminiscent of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vince Guaraldi and Sixties wall-of-sound girl groups, according to Rolling Stone.

Moretti was recently spotted at the Los Angeles gig of another Stroke side project, Albert Hammond, Jr., as previously reported.

Strokes' guitarist supports bandmate in New York

Nov 14, 2008

Little Joy performed their first-ever New York City show last night (November 13), with a sold-out performance at Mercury Lounge.

The band, started by The Strokes’ drummer Fabrizio Moretti, Brazilian musician Rodrigo Amarante, and Binki Shapiro, were joined for their set by Albert Hammond, Jr. drummer Matt Romano, as well as Michael Ian Cummings and Todd Dahlhoff of support band The Dead Trees.

Opening with the ‘Evaporar’ sung in Portuguese by Amarante, the band performed their entire self-titled debut for the packed crowd, which included Moretti’s Strokes- bandmate Albert Hammond, Jr. and girlfriend Agyness Deyn.

A bearded Moretti was excited to perform his hometown, having relocated to Los Angeles last year, telling the crowd:

“It’s so nice to see our friends and family. They say New York City is one of the hardest crowds to play. I don’t believe it. I don’t think you believe it!”

In addition to performing an as-yet untitled new track, Little Joy also played a rendition of ‘Walking Back to Happiness’, the well-known 1960s track by Helen Shapiro, Binki’s mother.

The tour continues tonight in Hoboken, NJ at Maxwell’s.

Little Joy played:

‘Evaporar’
‘Unattainable’
‘Play The Part’
‘Shoulder To Shoulder’
‘Brand New Start’
‘The Next Time Around’
‘Walking Back To Happiness’
‘With Strangers’
‘Don’t Watch Me Dancing’
‘How To Hang A Warhol’
‘No-one’s Better Sake’
(New Song)
‘Keep Me In Mind’
