Elbow Inks With Geffen For New Album

U.K. rock act Elbow has inked a new deal with Fiction/Geffen, which will on April 22 release the band's new album, "The Seldom Seen Kid." First single "One Day Like This" will be available digitally on March 18.

"Seldom Seen" is the follow-up to 2005's "Leaders of the Free World," released in the States by the now-defunct V2. Elbow will celebrate the new album with a short North American tour, beginning April 26 in New York.

In related news, frontman Guy Garvey guests on "Vantage Point," the upcoming album from Belgian rock outfit dEUS, due April 21 internationally. The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson also contributes to the project.

There are few things in life quite so liberating as the opening track on an Elbow album--they're like airlocks between the plainness of the outside world and the elaborate melancholic heave-ho that you are likely about to submerge yourself in. Following predecessors "Any Day Now", "Ribcage" and "Station Approach", "Starlings" opens their fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid rising from a bed of tumbling electronic subtlety like a depressed Atari game loading up, adding bare touches of piano, glimpses of ambient guitar, out of body background vocals, an understated pulse and a wisp of strings, before--EXCELSIS!--a fanfare avalanche of horns crashes the gate and elevates things to gasping palatial heights, before Guy Garvey's inimitable gravel tone and wrenchingly poetic reinterpretations of the everyday announce their arrival proper. It's astonishing, by far the most progressive moment on the album and if anything it sets the bar too high. But even when the pace dips, and songs like "Mirrorball" and "Weather to Fly" don't distinguish themselves quite enough, their textural peerlessness remains. This is a beautiful sounding record. Their collaboration with Richard Hawley may be more of a curiosity than a thing of beauty, but the highs, the riffing cross-stitch of "Ground for Divorce", the desolate grandeur of "The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver" and the enlightened string-laden anthem "On a Day Like This" (like their own Sound of Music--only substitute the Alpine peaks for a Manchester high-rise) number amongst the best of their career.

Elbow set for New York City in-store

Elbow have added an in-store appearance to their commitments in the US and Canada in support of the release of their new album, which comes out tomorrow (April 22).

The band will perform at Virgin Megastore in New York City’s Union Square on Friday (April 25), just a few days after their latest LP ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ hits shelves.

They will kick off the jaunt at Webster Hall in New York this Saturday (April 26) and will make their way across the US and Canada on a short tour which concludes on May 9 in Los Angeles.

this is only $7.99 this week at (I think) Best Buy. I'm undecided on whether to get it, as the last one wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped. Anyone have a review yet?

Elbow wrap up US tour in Los Angeles

Elbow wrapped up their US tour in Los Angeles on Friday night (May 9), wowing a sold-out crowd of adoring fans at the Avalon.

The Mancunian quintet kicked off their 90-minute set with four band members playing trumpets on the opening strains of ‘Starlings’, the first track off their new album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’.

They soon launched into the rousing ‘Leaders Of The Free World’, the politically charged title track from their 2005 album.

“We’re ending a great tour across American,” frontman Guy Garvey told the crowd. “It’s great to see you - you’re all looking very sunkissed,” he added.

The evening boasted some elaborate light displays, including a sparkling mirror ball that dropped from the ceiling during the track ‘Mirrorball’, and the crescendo of ‘The Loneliness Of A Tower Crane Driver’ that bathed the audience in bright blue lights.

Toward the end of their set, Garvey thanked everyone in his crew from the sound engineer to the tour bus driver. He also asked the audience to participate in singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to drummer Richard Jupp’s son, which he videotaped to send home.

“This is the best job in the world but it has its drawbacks, like Richard having to be away for his son Dylan’s birthday,” Garvey said.

The audience also participated in singing the chorus to ‘One Day Like This’, as well as Burt Bacharach’s ‘What The World Needs Now’ to bring the band back for an encore.

“This song is dedicated to your beautiful country – thank you for having us,” Garvey said before playing their penultimate track, ‘Grace Under Pressure’.

The band treated the crowd to one final number, ‘Scattered Black And Whites’, during which Garvey stepped down into the audience to shake people’s hands before saying goodbye.

“This tour has been amazing – we’ve had such a great time on the road,” Garvey told NME.COM during soundcheck.

In addition to their touring duties, Garvey said that the band found time to throw a barbeque at a trailer park and go white-water rafting in Oregon.

He also admitted that “beer o’clock has been coming earlier and earlier each day.”

“I love touring but each time I go away I come back with a new appreciation of Manchester,” he said.

FWIW, the UK version includes the exclusive track "We're Away"... shame that collectors won't be able to take advantage of the great domestic price.

Elbow: 'Mercury win is best thing that's ever happened to us'

Elbow claimed that their Nationwide Mercury Prize victory is "the best thing that's ever happened to [them]" during their acceptance speech tonight (September 9).

The group, who were awarded the prize and a Â£20,000 cheque for their fourth album 'The Seldom Seen Kid', seemed genuinely overawed at their accolade.

Speaking from the podium, singer Guy Garvey said: "Thank you very much. I'd like to thank all the players we've been with since day one, including Phil Chadwick, our manager.

"This is the best thing that's ever happened to us. We'd like to dedicate this award to Brian Clancy, one of the greatest men who ever lived. Thank you very much and have a top evening!"

Clancy, a late friend of the band, is honoured by the band as 'the seldom seen kid' of the album's title.

Garvey later explained his surprise at the band's victory, saying: "I had a tenner on Radiohead. It just feels great, very unexpected. You look at it in the same way as Bedouin tribes look at a pint of milk. It doesn't happen very often but it's all the sweeter.

"It's been a long time we've been doing it so it's cause for celebration. To the rest of the lads I'm so proud to do it with it with my best mates.

Referring to Badly Drawn Boy's 2001 win for 'The Hour Of The Bewilderbeast', bassist Pete Turner said: "I live three doors down from Damon Gough who won it so I can hold my head up high and give him the finger!"

Speaking about Brian Clancy, Garvey explained: "Miss him everyday, he was a great man he should be stood here in many ways.

"The trophy will be sat on Mandy Glancy's mantle piece, his mum, she's a very special lady. He was a dude and everyone who has done music in Manchester knows who he was. It was an album that celebrates his life and we're very proud to have known him."

Elbow triumphed against stiff competition from a variety of artists including Radiohead, British Sea Power, Laura Marling and the bookies' favourite, Burial.

Elbow top critics' album choice of 2008

Elbow's 'The Seldom Seen Kid' has been voted the UK music critics' album of the year.

The Mercury prize winning record was voted top in the 'Poll Of Polls' survey conducted by HMV which took in votes from media critics, staff and online customers.

It pulled in 18 nominations in total across 35 publications, sites and organisations that were polled.

Portishead's comeback album 'Third' came second with 17 votes while Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds' 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig', came third and Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend's debut albums came fourth and fifth.

TV On The Radio's 'Dear Silence', which was also voted number two in NME's album of 2008, came in sixth while NME's number one album MGMT's 'Oracular Spectacular', finished seventh.

Elsewhere, Bon Iver's 'For Emma Forever Ago' finished eighth, Glasvegas' self titled debut came in ninth and Hot Chip's third album 'Made In The Dark' finished at number 10.

HMV's Rock & Pop Buyer, Damian Evans, said: "The poll reflects an excellent, eclectic year in music with some exciting new artists featuring prominently.

"Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Bon Iver have really made their mark with wonderful debut albums, underlining how vibrant the music scene is right now.

"Established artists such as Portishead, Nick Cave and Metallica have also returned to great acclaim, although I suspect few people would dispute that Elbow have given us the album of the year.

"They were popular winners of the Nationwide Mercury Prize, and they now deservedly top the HMV Poll Of Polls as well."
