We get our books today in la belle province:

Runaways 16: BKV just makes me care for these characters..this books is just consistently good...the return of you-know who at the end just made me smile...9/10

BlackGas3: disturbing and violent zombie horror..very cool stuff by Ellis..most screwed up line "I am eating my own mom"..yeesh..glad to hear a sequel is planned..nice dark ending as well...8/10

Local 5: Brian Wood just knows how to write dialogue that intrigues me as a reader...talking heads and psychology that draws you in.. and this episode is in Canada (woo hoo!)..8/10

COBB#1: Beau Smith and Ed Barretto just give us an old school action movie in comic book form..Cobb is an ex secret service agent and all around good guy who sticks up for the underdog..who ends up in a tussle with some hardcore russian mobsters out to silence a (beautifull) witness...this is why I read comics...9/10

Ultimate Extinction 5:a cool conclusion to a fun mini series..all the ultimate teams crank it up to 11 to take down Galahktus...lots of sci fi coolness as the FF use nascent dimensions and crazy tech to take down the threat (along with some other surprises)...Fury's last line at the end is worth the price of admission alone...8/10

Punisher The Tyger: BEST BOOK OF THE WEEK by far..Ennis is just magic when it comes to the Punisher...here we get a tale set in Frank's past..his childhood in Brooklyn, his tour in Vietnam and his early days as the Punisher...this book just oozes tension as you know something horrible is just around the corner of every page..just brilliant..plus the whole iconography of the Tiger and Blake's peom take a crime story and bring it to another level..brilliant...10/10

I was intrigued when I learned Ennis would be teaming up with old EC alumn, John Severin

Robert's list from a duplicate thread, moved here:

The "Since Diddy's probably changing Diapers" Comics Thread for 06/01/06

Short list for the delayed week:

Battlestar Galactica #0 - For .25 cents, I'll give it a look-see.

Books of Doom #6 - The Conclusion, it's been an interesting ride so far.

Red Sonja #10 - I do believe this book has hit a regular monthly schedule, one of my monthly "Must Reads".

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #5 - Now I remember where I've seen Brian Chings' art before, in the old Battlestar Galactica series put out by Maximum Press. He's improved since then.

The Thing #7 - There better be an issue after 8.

Warlord #4 - Still enjoying the story.

Batman 653––––––––––––Don Kramer art. 'Nuff said.
52 wk4––––––––––––––––eh. not really getting into it.
Action 839–––––––––––––I've been enjoying the current storyline.
Superman/Batman 26––––Would someone please tell me why Liefeld is still getting work. I mean, I'm serious now. This guy's work isn't worth...well, anyone can fill in the blank. I know he may be buds with Jeph Loeb and all, but still.....I really feel strongly about this. The man has had his time, and either needs to take some drawing classes or give up the dream.

okay, end of rant. I'm better now. Thanks for letting me vent. A good day to all, and happy reading.

Four more Marvel Masterworks via mail-order:

Ant-Man/Giant-Man Vol. 1 - Well! These ain't great, nope! These stories are from the REALLY early days of Marvel and, like The Human Torch series, the Marvel Magic just isn't there. On the other hand, it does benefit from having a heroic Dr. Henry Pym instead of the multiple-nervous breakdowns/multiple-personalities/wifebeating obsessive later writers saw fit to lay on him.

Avengers Vol. 3 - IMO, the Lee/Thomas/Heck/Buscema stuff from about issue 19-50 was the best Avengers ever got. There's some other classic runs (Stern/Buscema and Busiek/Perez are stand-outs) but these issues are just so damn fine.

Dr. Strange Vol. 1 - The Question is good, the Blue Beetle is fine, Mr. A is impressive and Spider-Man is great, but THIS is the best super-hero stuff Ditko has ever done. It's WAY, WAY out there, yet grounded at the same time. Dr. Strange has never recovered since Ditko left, every story coasting on these great tales, even the ones with the fabulous Frank Brunner art.

Thor Vol. 3 - Even though it was a Lee/Kirby book, Thor was a real slow starter, but this the volume where the run starts getting really good. Once this series hit its stride, it became as good as Fantastic Four. I think which you thought was better was determined by what you liked more, science fiction or fantasy. Either way, Thor of this vintage is truly classic, at the very least an equal to the Simonson stuff that comes later. If you don't believe me, ask IMWANNER-supreme, Mr. Jason Gourlay. I gave him a few issues of this vintage and he started on a shopping spree. I think he's got most of the run now. (BTW Jason, Walt Simonson says the jump-on point for great Lee/Kirby Thor is JiM #115.)

Bannings: fear taste?
52 Week #4 Not as much Elongated Man this issue. Booo. I like the Montoya plot. What's with Steel? Booster Gold is being more of an ass now.

Crisis Aftermath The Spectre #1 I bet this will be Linda's favorite comic. The Spectre with a goatee!

Ion #2 A hero with blackouts? Has this EVER been done before? Sigh.

JLA Classified #21 I loved the art for this story, and enjoyed the hypothetical heroes.

Showcase Presents Haunted Tank Vol 1 Mmmm... Kubert and Heath magic.

Liberty Meadows #37 (resolicited 2 years later) BOOBIES! Naked! With wings!

Thing #7 Does this mean Alicia and Ben are together again?

Last Hero Standing TPB I never got the miniseries, so finally bought the trade. Nice Pat Orliffe art!

I'm late...

52 #4 -- Not bad. Really don't like the Cassie stuff so far (i.e. the Superboy cult) and I'm not sure turning Steel into Oscar (or is that the Silver Surfer?) is a good move. Otherwise, I enjoyed it. 7/10

The Thing #7 -- Second last issue? Boo-hoo. I really like this issue. Nice little stand alone tale. Good art (line was pretty heavy... reminded me of Ernie Colon a bit). 8.5/10

Books of Doom #6 -- Great last issue to the mini. I have to go back and read the whole arc, but this conclusion was great. Brubaker fleshed out Doom nicely without betraying any former portrayals and gave us a nice creepy ending. I thought he blew it there at the end, but the trick was on me. 9/10

Action Comics #839 -- Gah. two more issues to go in the arc right? C'mon. This is boring. 5/10

Runaways #16 -- Just a great book. Sorry to hear Alphona will soon leave the book for a while... his art is sooooo perfect for this book. Really an underrated penciller. Sigh. This arc is going to be tragic isn't it? Damn. 9/10
