The first 2-CD set to cover the entire career of glam-rock, proto-punk, and hard-rock pioneer Ian Hunter, from his earliest days with Mott the Hoople to his 2007 album Shrunken Heads, touching on many highlights in between. Contains detailed liner notes by music journalist Ben Edmonds.

Disc 1: Mott The Hoople. Heralded by Rolling Stone as "the best band of the early '70s," Mott The Hoople were critic's darlings until David Bowie stepped in and gave them their biggest hit, the all-time classic "All the Young Dudes," turning them into glam superstars in the U.K. and an underground sensation on the U.S. This package contains their best Atlantic and Columbia recordings.

Disc 2: Ian Hunter. Singer Ian Hunter went solo in 1975, starting a long career featuring contributions from punk rockers and classic rockers alike. Producer Mick Ronson and members of Foreigner, Frank Zappa's band, Queen, Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols all appear on this collection of his best solo material from his Columbia, Chrysalis, Mercury, Citadel and Yep Roc releases.

I'm in! Happy to get all of these great Mott/Hunter songs in one collection, almost like an extended "Shades of Ian Hunter".

Are there any important or otherwise hit songs missing from this? My collection is devoid of Ian Hunter and Mott, so this might be one I'd get.

I like this one and I got it pretty cheap but I don't think it's easily available anymore, the Shout/Factory might be the next best option.

Found a version of England Rocks as a bonus track on the UK & Japan issues of Overnight Angels.
I've got Overnight but its just a straight issue. One my favorite by Ian btw.

While it's a bit more pricy then a 2 cd b/o, as a huge Hunter Mott fan, I'd suggest the following to start as essential (most of these are budget issues, too!):

Mott:
All The Young Dudes Expanded
Mott Expanded
The Hoople Expanded (unfortunately, this one is import only)

Ian Hunter:
expanded self titled 1st album
Welcome To The Club

For early Mott:
The Best of the Island Years: 1969-1972 (Import but cheap on Amazon)

I agree with Geff R, Mott and Hunter are too big names for an anthology only.

As I recall, "England Rocks" can be found cheap as a bonus track on American Beat's twofer reissue of ALL-AMERICAN ALIEN BOY and...whatever that album is with ANGELS in the title.

Thanks for the recommendations, Geff. But has anyone picked up the new Shout Factory set? And if so, how's the overall sound quality, etc.?

If you're a true Mott The Hoople fan you'd track down the box set from a few years back[it's well worth the effort imho].

I'm approaching more from a standpoint of having no Hoople whatsoever, so I'd rather get a good best of or maybe get the selected works that Geff referred me to.

Agree hawk, I have this boxset. The Mott box and the Free box are played more often than most.

Strongly recommend!

I have the Mott box; I agree it's well done.

There have been rumors of a video comp from Buffin the last year or 2; I can't wait!
