Yet another one of my LCS's was having a sale; this month, all selected TPB's are half off. ( ! )

So, I decided to blow still more money and got Knightfall Vol. 2, Spider-Man Visionaries: Roger Stern, Spider-Man: Evil That Men Do and... Manhunter.

Holy crap, this is the martial arts comic I wished existed but never knew about until now. Really awesome action, a great concept, and a near-perfect blend of sc-fi, pulp heroes and chop-sockey action. The 8 page stories really gave it a Eisner "Spirit" vibe as well.

Highest Possible Recommendation!

Shamefully short-lived.

Walter was a genius even then. One of my all-time faves.

Yeah, Goodwin and Simonson were firing on all cylinders with that book. I remember finding two or three of the DETECTIVE issues with Manhunter backups, then the climactic team-up story with Batman. I searched desperately for the other issues for years, but couldn't find them, so the first collected edition in the early 80s was a godsend.

They ran the story around the same time that Batman was wanted for murder.

That was a great run.

Simonson really was a breath of fresh air when he hit the scene.

Walter's special series wrap-up/tribute to Goodwin was fantastic.

One of the best series in comic history. A pretty good movie too, btw.

Gerry recently bought a cool B & W Manhunter TPB. With all these raves, I think I may get that one. Someone repost the cover so I know what to get!

I don't know which one is the black and white but the two below issues are good; the top one is the cheapest way to get the core story, but it lacks the "final chapter", a silent issue dedicated to Goodwin. The bottom one has that chapter but is about 10 bucks.

The silent story can really be missed, as it's more of an epilogue than anything that concerns the story; but for the Manhunter completist, it's worth paying 4 times the cost of the floppy.

Ooh, cool commission concept, Gerry! Please post a pic when it arrives.

I wonder, could this character work in today's market? Busiek tried to bring forth a version in the Power Company series, but that didn't exactly catch on. And now with Goodwin gone I don't know who would handle the character the best.

Gerry,

You got that B & W version fairly cheap, correct? Where'd you get it? I think I want a copy.

I picked up "the top one" when I happened across it a few years ago after hearing how great Manhunter was. I can't say it's a personal favorite, but it WAS an impressive series, especially considering when it came out.
