Dirty Pretty Things make 'arty' new album

Oct 2, 2007

Dirty Pretty Things are making an 'arty' second album, according to their manager.

The follow-up to 2006's self-titled debut is currently being recorded in Los Angeles.

Manager Alan McGee said: "It's great. We've got five or six really big songs this time on the album, whereas on the last album there was maybe only one really stand-out big hit.

"It's really different as well. Much more arty and much more pop. It's a really big change for them - it's much more melodic."

McGee also said new song titles included 'Come Close', 'Plastic Hearts', 'Blood Red Shoes' and 'Fault Lines'.

No release date has been announced, reports Xfm.

2008 sophomore album from the British Indie outfit led by former Libertines guitarist Carl Barat. Recorded between London and Los Angeles, the follow-up to 2006's Waterloo To Anywhere perfectly demonstrates the band's songwriting progression and musical growth. There is added emphasis on the heartfelt, earnest and often angry lyrics from frontman and ex-Libertine Barat, while the Punk fuelled guitar riffs and gunshot rhythms remain. 12 tracks including the single 'Tired Of England'. Mercury.

1. Buzzards And Crows
2. Hippy's Son
3. Plastic Hearts
4. Tired Of England
5. Come Closer
6. Faultlines
7. Kicks Or Consumption
8. Best Face
9. Truth Begins
10. Chinese Dogs
11. The North
12. Blood On My Shoes

Dirty Pretty Things: 'We wanted to give new album away, Radiohead style'

Jan 23, 2008

Dirty Pretty Things frontman Carl Barat has revealed that he wanted to give the band’s forthcoming new album away free, Radiohead-style.

Speaking to NME.COM, Barat explained that his idea was quickly knocked down by his manager, Alan McGee.

“I wanted to give the album away on the internet like Radiohead did,” he said. “I saw what they did and said, ‘Oh, that’s great, let’s do that too,’. But Alan told me straight off that it wasn’t going to occur. Ah, well.”

Barat went on to reveal details of his band’s forthcoming second album, produced by Nick Leman in Santa Monica, over the tail end of 2007. The follow-up to 2006's 'Waterloo To Anywhere' is due to be released this spring.

The band recorded 20 songs, including ‘Plastic Hearts’, ‘Come Closer’, ‘Blood On My Shoes’, ‘Buzzards and Crows’ and ‘This Is Where The Truth Begins’ (which is also contender for the album’s title), with 12 set make the final cut.

“We didn’t record live – it’s the first time I’ve ever recorded like that,” explained Barat. “It was a bit unnerving – the three albums I’d done before [two Libertines albums and ‘Waterloo To Anywhere’] had all been recorded live.

“But there’s a lot of melody in these songs, and you risk losing that if you just thrash around.

“It’s a bit easier on the ear,” Barat added, suggesting that the new album will differ from the band’s debut. “I don’t mean easy listening by any means, but we got a bit 'Black Flag' on the last one,” he declared. “This one’s a lot more considered, but the passion and intent is the same.

Some of the songs which will make the final cut, such as probable first single ‘Plastic Hearts’, are already live favourites, but Barat is quick to warn fans not to expect standard replications of the songs on the album.

“The songs have changed a hell of a lot since we started playing them live,” he said. “When we played them first we were freestyling, but now we’ve even got strings on some of them. Well, it’s strings through a keyboard effect so it’s cheating – but it’s still strings! We’ve got some weird drum sounds too – some really, er, block rockin’ beats.”

Dirty Pretty Things name second album

Mar 3, 2008

Dirty Pretty Things have revealed that their second album will be called 'This Is Where The Truth Begins' – after one of the songs on the album.

The band had previously revealed to NME.COM that the song name was likely to be the album’s title, and guitarist Anthony Rossomonso confirmed the decision to XFM at the Shockwaves NME Awards on Thursday (February 28).

“We've got some big old fuckin' songs on the record," Rossomonso explained. “Carl [Barat, singer/guitarist] and I kinda went into the darkness with each other.

“We found a way out, climbing over each other until we crawled out of that whole proverbial hole and now we've got this record. It by far out-gleams the first one and it has so much more truth in it.”

The record is due to be released on June 30.

Dirty Pretty Things test out new songs in London

May 1, 2008

Dirty Pretty Things played songs from their forthcoming second album last night (April 30) at the Proud Gallery in London.

Carl Barat and co packed out the venue, playing a full electric set – despite rumours that the band were only there for an acoustic performance.

As well as older tracks including 'Deadwood' and set closer 'Bang Bang You're Dead', Dirty Pretty Things played new songs 'Hippy's Son', 'This Is Where The Truth Begins' and 'Plastic Hearts'.

The latter song, already a live favourite from shows last year, is expected to be the band's comeback single, while 'This Is Where The Truth Begins' is the title of their forthcoming second album, which is likely to be released this summer.

'Hippy's Son' stood out in particular from the new grop, featuring energetic growled vocals from Barat and an insistent melody.

Bassist Didz Hammmond was still sporting his impressive moustache while guitarist Anthony Rossomando had the setlist scrawled wildly on his arm.

The band played:

'Come Closer'
'Hippy's Son'
'Chinese Dogs'
'Deadwood'
'Tired Of England'
'Plastic Hearts'
'This Is Where The Truth Begins'
'Gin And Milk'
'Faultlines'
'Bang Bang You're Dead'
