Universal/UK is planning on fully exploiting the material that they've obtain through their purchase of Sanctuary Music.
In November, they are releasing a 3-CD edition of Emerson,Lake & Palmer's 5th album "Brain Salad Surgery". No word on the track listing yet.
But Amazon.com are showing the artwork for this and the "Black Sabbath-Paranoid" 3-CD set. Both releases feature the familiar Universal Music "Deluxe Edition" tranparent slipcase, similar to what they've used on Deluxe Edition releases by Eric Clapton,Elton John,Free,ABBA,Blind Faith,The Moody Blues,Paul Kossoff,Cream and others

Thanks, Phil. Here's what Amazon is showing, along with a tracklisting (which unfortunately doesn't yet specify which tracks are demo versions, alternate mixes, live or whatnot). Amazon UK has it scheduled for a September 29th release, not November ~ is that incorrect?

When I last looked(right before posting at IMWAN), it DID say November. Things can rapidly change though.

My GUESS is that one of the discs will be the alternate mix with alternate lead vocals that was mistakenly/temporarily released a few years back by Sanctuary UK. I actually prefer that version.

BTW, at the moment the Amazon UK price is way better then the US price; remember when non-Europeans order from Amazon UK, the Vat is subtracted from the posted price! I just checked & assuming $1.95 to the pound it came in at just under $31 USD (3 UK pounds shipping).

As with the Sabbath announcement I am hoping for the Quad mix here. Believe it or not the only time BSS was released in QUAD was on 8-track tape. I still remember holding it in my hand at "Harmony Hut" trying to decide should I buy or not.

This is great news! Universal's 'Deluxe Editions' series have always delivered the goods when it comes to presentation, sound quality & bonus tracks and their upcoming release of ELP's 'Brain Salad Surgery' should be no exception. I guess that we'll know more about the material on Discs 2 & 3 as the release date approches.

Finally.... This high-octane album is finally getting the treatment it
well deserves... It seems like no one under thirty seems to know
this album or ELP for that matter and think that RUSH is the say-
all for Progressive Rock. I tell those younger than me that this
album was Moving Pictures 8 years prior...

Anyone know if this is going to be a dual hybrid SACD like the
Genesis & Moody Blues re-releases...?

I would just play a waiting game and see if the price comes down as the time gets near as far as the Amazon USA thing goes.

Would actually have preferred this treatment to have been given to their best album, "Trilogy," but, hey, this one looks pretty interesting, too. Worth getting, I'm sure.

If it's SACD I'm probably in, if not I have the alt Sanctuary & the Shout Factory so I'm probably set cd wise.

These guys are hot on the heels of Elvis Costello when it comes to number and frequency of reissues, at least where this album is concerned.

Yeah, ELP has received some heat for remastering every 5 or so years. But in
defense of them, they're doing such due to the ever so improvements of digital
mastering technology that's been happening the last 15-18 years. With such
said, all new releases should be CD/SACD dual hybrids like the Dylan/Stones/
Genesis revamps... Regardless, I'm a fan & a sucker who will continue to buy
such releases and I think the labels know that there are good number of me and
my type out there...

Completely agreed. The marketing has been AWFUL on SACD, at least in the US. The amazing thing is on my entry level (about $11,000 in the 90's) high end system SACD played on my $100 Pioneer universal player sounds about as good as cd on my $3300 cd front end.

THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A MARKETING SLAM DUNK, $100 for true high end sound quality. I don't get it.

I'm going to repeat that, SACD sounds as good on a $100 player as cd does on a $3300 player. Hybrid SACD should be the standard. & for those who want, the $100 Pioneer does 5.1 also in both SACD & DVD-A. & it plays dvd's...........

I have a copy of Brain Salad Surgery on a Rhino DVD-A and it sounds AMAZING.Since a 5.1 mix already exists,it should not be too hard to release it on SACD.The DVD-A also has a 5.1 mix of "Lucky Man" as a bonus track as well as 5 videos from the Manticore Documentary.I'm not sure if it is still in print but it would be worth seeking out in leiu of an SACD being released. There was also a 4 disc Box Set released in 1993 on Rhino called "The Return Of The Manticore" that featured 6 new recordings on Disc 1, 5 of which were encoded with "Dolby Surround Sound" that might be of interest to ELP fans looking for multichannel releases.

Yes, the DVD-A sounds amazing because it was taken from the original
16 or 24 multi track master tape. Hopefully, we'll be able to compare the
job done then with an SACD mastering job this time around... As I stated
above, I'll buy this go 'round and then probably buy the hi-rez Blu-Ray
version that'll probably hit stores 5 years from now...

Hey, what's all the bruhaha about the expanded edition of Brain Salad Surgery, when the far superior Pictures at an Exhibition is being released as an expanded edition on the same day (September 29)? Now there's something to anticipate--with a complete alternate live performance of PAE from the Lyceum in 1970. I'll be first in line for that one. Check out spincds.com.

Because the expanded "Brain Salad Surgery" has previously unreleased studio alternate mixes & take plus a surround sound mix. As for an expanded "Pictures at an Exhibition", it is, at this point only rumored. No dealer is offering it for pre-order.

Here we go ~ it's currently scheduled for release in the UK on the same day as the Brain Salad Surgery deluxe edition, but Pictures is only going to be a two-CD set, not three discs.

Thanks for the info Linda. Will consider picking up the Deluxe Edition of "Pictures" along with "Brain Salad Surgery". Would be great if Universal UK does Deluxe Edtions of the other albums in ELP's catalog (we'll see if that happens).

Well, the problem is that this group didn't record much that they didn't release. Much of the outtake material appeared through "Works Vol.2". I guess that they can add a related concert performance as a "disc 2" to any Deluxe Edition. And there may be a few more solo recordings that didn't make it into the "Works" albums.
