Despite a wave of criticism asserting that Kings of Leon's fourth full-length is "too commercial," Only by the Night may be the closest thing to a pitch-perfect album to drop in 2008. Granted, Tennessee's band of brothers (and one first cousin) takes a turn for the heavily polished here, but what the album lacks in rough-edged raunch, it more than makes up for in earnestness and--yes--stunning beauty. From the opening notes of "Closer" to the listing balladry of "Cold Desert," Only by the Night hardly misses a beat. Highlights abound, particularly in the trading off of melodic lines between instruments, and in this regard, bassist Jared Followill is the album's quiet MVP. Above these gorgeous instrumentals, singer Caleb emotes with a dramatic grit that never loses its command. A model of melodic rock composition, arranged and produced with a warm, inviting veneer, and performed with aching sincerity, these 11 tracks coalesce into a sanguine whole that eclipses the band's much-discussed rock posturing and yields more with every play. A good band's great album, Only by the Night (finally) establishes Kings of Leon as a rock act that's worthy of seriously sustained attention. --Jason Kirk

Kings Of Leon get political on new album
'Sean Penn is gonna like us more' says Caleb Followill

Kings Of Leon have nearly finished recording the follow-up to 2007's 'Because Of The Times'. The band have been laying down tracks in a Nashville studio for the new album, slated for a September release.

Frontman Caleb Followill quipped that the pills he's been taking following surgery to repair his arm from a fistfight with his brother Nathan may have played a role in the new album.

“I don’t know if it was the pills or what, but the melodies were so much stronger than anything I’ve ever done — it’s just really beautiful songs,” he said.

“I know I sound like a fucking cock right now, but this is the first time I’ve really been proud of myself, track for track," he told Rolling Stone.

The band have also reportedly been hitting the bottle for a bit of inspiration. “We had to get drunk because we all have girlfriends to go home to and deal with,” Caleb said.

Song titles includes 'Cold Desert' and 'Crawl', a track with political overtones. “Let’s just say that Sean Penn is gonna like us more,” he said.

Kings Of Leon will take a break from the studio to play a handful of live dates opening for Pearl Jam, beginning tonight (June 11) in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Kings Of Leon: 'We almost didn't make a fourth album'

Jul 11, 2008

Kings Of Leon have revealed that they were not initially planning to release a new album in 2008, but changed their mind when they were offered a headline slot at the Glastonbury festival.

Frontman Caleb Folowill told NME.COM that his band had opriginally planned to take time off, but after the Glastonbury offer came in they decided to continue momentum after the show and make sure they had an album to release.

The band are set to release their fourth album, 'Only By The Night', in September.

"We were at the end of our tour and we were going to take a load of time off," Folowill said. "But then we got the call and we were like, 'Fuck! We should probably be putting out a record'.

"We don't like seeing other bands go to the top," he added. "We're scared if we take too much time off we'll forget how to do it."

Kings of Leon reveal album tracklisting

Aug 5, 2008

Kings Of Leon have confirmed the tracklisting of their fourth album to NME.COM.

'Only By The Night' is released on September 22, and features the following 11 songs:

'Closer'
'Crawl'
'Sex On Fire'
'Use Somebody'
'Manhattan'
'Revelry'
'Seventeen'
'Notion'
'I Want You'
'Be Somebody'
'Cold Desert'

"We took some risks but you have to make a record you're pleased with, you can't worry about anybody else," explained frontman Caleb Followill of the record which sees the band embracing a bigger sound, as showcased on track 'Crawl', which the band gave away as a free download with NME.COM last week.

The first single from the album will be 'Sex On Fire' - out September 15 (download from September 8) - though the singer admitted the unexpected title came about by accident.

"I just had this melody and I didn't know what to say, and one day I just sang 'this sex is on fire' and I laughed and the other guys are like 'what are you laughing at?'," he recalled. "I thought it was terrible, but they were like 'It's good, it's got a hook'. I was like 'Fuck off!' but I ended up writing it. There's an element of sex that's expected in our songs, so I tried to wrap it all up in one song."

Kings Of Leon slam bootleggers

Aug 15, 2008

Kings Of Leon have slammed fans who bootleg their gigs and release live show recordings online, saying it holds them back from playing as much new material live as they would like to.

Guitarist Matthew Followill told BBC 6music that ideally his band would like to play more new material sooner than they have, but fears that recordings of unreleased material may be posted online made them hold back.

Kings Of Leon played a show at the London Brixton Academy last night (August 14), playing some songs from their forthcoming new album, 'Only By The Night'.

"It's difficult when you make a new record and you wanna play all the new songs live," he said. "But with technology these days, there'll be someone out there with a recorder and it kinda spoils it for us."

"You don't wanna play too many new songs because otherwise they'll be on YouTube or something," he continued. "So we have to pick and choose. If it was up to us we'd play all the new songs because they're so fun to play."

What a stupid fear. The playing of new material and subsequent posting of said material only serves to get people excited for the new record. If the songs are even remotely decent, people will be salivating with anticipation, waiting to hear the studio versions. This stuff gets fans talking about the new album well in advance of release.

there attitude is the exact OPPOSITE of radiohead & ryan adams' who seems to positively DEMAND folks record their gigs

& I definitely agree that it only adds to the excitement of a new release for me.. my whole cynicism for the verve reforming, for instance, was turned by hearing "love is noise" live.

On the plus side, "crawl" & "sex on fire" sound like tracks that belong to yet another very, very good album. 'because of the times' was my album of the year, so this is shaping up to be reeeeeal exciting.

Sex on Fire is a good track; good energy. Crawl's got a pretty nasty groove. I quite like it. Both make me hopeful for the new record (though they do lack the skungy, dirty sound I liked so much on Times).

Kings Of Leon thought 'Sex On Fire' was 'terrible'
Caleb Followill reveals his bandmates talked him into new single

September 10, 2008
http://www.nme.com/news/kings-of-leon/39624

Kings Of Leon have admitted they nearly didn't bother recording 'Sex On Fire' because they thought it was "terrible".

Speaking to NME.COM about the track, which was released this week (September 8), singer Caleb Followill said he initially had serious doubts about whether he'd even bother to finish writing it.

"I just had this melody and I didn't know what to say. Then one day I just sang "this sex is on fire" and I laughed. I thought it was terrible, but the rest of the band were like, 'it's good, it's got a hook'. I was like 'fuck off!' but I ended up writing it," he said.

He also went to explain the inspiration behind the song's sex-themed lyrics.

"There's an element of sex that's expected in our songs so I tried to wrap it all up in one song. If you read the lyrics you'll find it's got some quite visual lyrics in it. It's a pretty sexy song actually, but I knew after writing 'Sex On Fire', I couldn't write verses about making out, or going to the movie theatre with a girl," he said.

Kings Of Leon say settling down has helped their music
Plus band 'would love to kick Fall Out Boy's arses'

September 17, 2008
http://www.nme.com/news/kings-of-leon/39770

Image

Kings Of Leon have revealed that avoiding drugs and girls has helped their music.

Caleb Followill told The Sun that getting long-term girlfriends and staying away from their old party lifestyle has meant that the band could concentrate on new album 'Only By The Night', which has so far spawned their first Number One single 'Sex On Fire'.

Followill told the paper: "You [the band members] were in your hotel room all by yourself all day. You wake up and it's already dark out and you're so lonely. So at night, you go out with girls.

"At the end of the day, you want to be doing something that will, hopefully, be remembered. You want that to be on the cover of the magazines, and the other stuff to be the blurb. As opposed to that on the magazine cover and the music as a blurb."

His brother, Jared Followill, explained that the band want more than their recent chart success with 'Sex On Fire', saying: "We consider ourselves to be better than a lot of those bands that are big now, like Panic At The Disco or Fall Out Boy," he said. "We would love to kick their arses out of there."

Celebs come out in force for Kings Of Leon show in New York

Sep 24, 2008

Kings Of Leon performed an intimate show at New York’s Webster Hall last night (September 23) to celebrate the release of their brand new album ‘Only By The Night’.

Taking to the stage at 9.15pm, the Followills opened with ‘Crawl’, before launching into UK Number One single ‘Sex On Fire’.

Five songs in, frontman Caleb Followill spoke to the crowd simply saying ‘We’re Kings Of Leon and we’re here celebrating our album release, we hope you’re having a good time’.

Watched by a crowd that included Drew Barrymore, Danny Masterson and ’Gossip Girl’ actors Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick, the band made their way through a selection of tracks from their four-album catalog including ‘Molly’s Chambers’, Taper Jean Girl’, ‘Arizona’, ‘Fans’ and ‘The Bucket’.

‘We’d like to play you guys a new song we’ve never played before’ Followill said ‘and we have Nacho helping us out’. The band’s cousin Nacho, best known as their longtime roadie, then come onstage and played keyboards on ‘Only By The Night’ track ‘Closer’.

The band then decamped to New York rock scene’s new favourite bar Bowery Electric, where they were joined by their VIP audience, while Jesse Malin DJed.

I do, but the amount of info I find to post in each thread is just down to what's available. (If I were playing favourites then the Gigolo Aunts threads would be 400 pages apiece. ;))

I've been so wrapped up in stuff, I never did track this down for a listen. I've only read two reviews, and they were polar opposites. Spin really liked the album a lot, while Pitchfork trashed the fuck out of it.
