From Richard Evans (art director) and John Atkins (liner notes) via thewho.com
Here's what Richard Evans said-
"The good news... is that THIRTY YEARS OF MAXIMUM R&B LIVE is soon to be re-released on DVD. I've just re-worked the artwork for it. No new material I'm afraid to say, but great to see it back in the racks nevertheless. I'm not sure when the release date is but probably in the next month."
John Atkins, who is re-working the liner notes, followed with this-
1. The sound will be 5.1
2. The title will be Maximum R & B Live (no 30 years, now, for obvious reasons)
3. There will be a bonus DVD of the entire 1981 Rockpalast gig.
This coming out in a month or sounds very optimistic but it does seem like it will be in stores sooner rather than later. ------------ Hell yea, Max R&B is still at this point the best live DVD of The Who 1965-89. It has been long out of print in the US. If you want to see The Who in their prime this one has these clips:
Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere - From the Richmond Blues & Jazz Festival, 1965 So Sad About Us - From the Marquee Club, 1967 A Quick One, While He's Away - From the Monterey Pop Festival, 1967 Happy Jack - From the London Coliseum, 1969 Heaven And Hell/I Can't Explain/Water - From Tanglewood Music Shed, 1970 Young Man Blues/I Don't Even Know Myself - From the Isle of Wright Festival, 1970 My Generation - From "Popgala", Voorsburg, Holland, 1973 Substitute/Drowned/Bell Boy/My Generation Blues - From Charlton Football Club, 1974 Dreaming From The Waist - From Cleveland, 1975 Sister Disco/Who Are You - From Shepperton Studios, 1979 5:15/My Wife/Music Must Change/Pinball Wizard - From the International Amphitheater, Chicago, 1979 Behind Blue Eyes - From the Concert for Kampuchea, 1979 Love Reign O'er Me - From She Stadium, 1982 Boris The Spider/I Can See For Miles/See Me, Feel Me - From Giants Stadium, 1989
The Rockpalast show is from Essen Germany March 28, 1981:
Substitute, I Can't Explain, Baba O' Riley, The Quiet One, Don't Let Go The Coat, Sister Disco, You Better You Bet, Drowned, Behind Blue Eyes, Another Tricky Day, Pinball Wizard, Who Are You, 5.15, My Generation, Won't Get Fooled Again, Summertime Blues, Twist And Shout, See Me Feel Me
It seems they are finally seriously diving into the archives! (fingers crossed) TheOx

Now THIS is the Who DVD to get excited about--containing absolutely no footage overlap with "The Kids Are Alright", and now with 5.1 sound? The $100 used copies on Ebay will finally be deservedly obsolete.

I have that Rockpalast show on DVD as a solid boot, but I will absolutely get this. That show from 1981 was a damn good one, though Pete was in a bad way. There are great versions of "Drowned", "Another Tricky Day", "Sister Disco", "Don't Let Go The Coat", "Behind Blue Eyes" and "The Quiet One" among others. I hated the way they played "I Can't Explain" at this time adding pauses between the lyrics of the chorus-it never worked for me! Anyway, man, the fans are being treated to some great stuff finally!

This is really fine news. This one will be well worth the investment.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this re-release has been postponed until next year due to legal issues. This is likely due to the Rockpalast show. I can deal with this better than another delay with the Kilburn DVD. TheOx

I hope it turns out to be merely a delay, and not sadder news.
In a similar Who-centric vein, I am hopeful that one of the Who experts here can let me know if the 2-disc version of "The Kids are Alright" DVD is worth searching out? I seem to have missed the boat when it was first released, and now the Special Edition with bonus disc is fetching a pretty penny. Is the extra material on the second DVD worth the expenditure, or am I not missing anything special and the excellent single-disc version would suffice?

Is the extra material on the second DVD worth the expenditure, or am I not missing anything special and the excellent single-disc version would suffice? Yes, the two disc special edition is worth getting the bonus disc includes: * Multi Camera Angles - An extremely rare feature that is almost 100 minutes and featuring as many as 6 angles including a Pete cam, a Roger cam, a Moonie cam and an Ox cam for the Shepperton 1978 performances of Baba O' Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again. * Making of the DVD - 40 minute feature offering an in-depth look at how the film was restored. * Q&A with film director Jeff Stein * Audio Comparison - This 8 minute feature provides a direct side-by-side comparison of the before and after audio. * Video Comparison - This 6 minute feature provides a direct side-by-side comparison of the before and after so people can see what they’ve been missing all these 24 years! * The Ox - A very special audio feature allowing the user to select an isolated audio track of legendary bassist John Entwistle for the above Shepperton performances. * The Who's London - An interactive feature offering the viewer a video tour of Who landmarks. * Trivia Games - Questions to test your knowledge with a prize of a newly mixed 5.1 rendering of the album version of "Who Are You" playing a video light/slide show and a long lost recording of Ringo Starr (film trailer). The only problem is, TKAA is now out of print. You can still find it reasonably priced, just check the normal places like ebay. TheOx

TheOx One caveat for those interested in this 2-disc set--it contains not a single note of previously unreleased music.

I believe this is coming out next week Apr. 14, and I will definitely be getting it even though I've had the Rockpalast show for years and I don't expect it to be cleaned up too much, it's a damn good show.

I picked this up over the weekend at my neighborhood store...haven't watched it yet but it looks great. I got it for $19...might be a bit higher than Best Buy but I like to support the neighborhood place.

I got this at Best Buy for $15.99 and used my $10 gift card. They rang it up at $16.99 and I was going to let it go, but it's Best Buy so I waited until a manager fixed the price and I won back $1.07. Stickin' it to the corporate man! Anyway, nice packaging-I look forward to watching this as I never had it before.

Neither of the two local Best Buy's had it last Wednesday. I'll have another look around town this week for it.
