Golden Smog Best-Of Boasts Unreleased Cover

A previously unreleased cover of Brian Wilson's "Love and Mercy" and an early version of "Until You Came Along" will be found on Rhino's upcoming Golden Smog collection "Stay Golden," due Sept. 23.

The lauded supergroup features Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Soul Asylum's Dan Murphy, Big Star's Jody Stephens and the Jayhawks' Gary Louris and Marc Perlman and Run Westy Run's Kraig Johnson.

Golden Smog recorded two albums and an EP in the '90s; eight songs each are included from the albums on "Stay Golden," but none made the cut from the 2006 reunion effort "Another Fine Day" or last year's "Blood on the Slacks."

In the late '80s, Minneapolis was home to a tightly knit music scene that claimed its fair share of groups on college and alternative radio playlists. When they weren't playing in their own bands, singer Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run) and guitarists Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum) Gary Louris (the Jayhawks) and Marc Perlman (the Jayhawks) got together as Golden Smog to play with friends and have a good time. The band recorded a pair of albums for Rykodisc in the early '90s, featuring Uncle Tupelo/Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and drummers Noah Levy (Honeydogs) and Jody Stephens (Big Star). Rhino brings together the essential tracks from both of those early releases for [title]STAY GOLDEN, SMOG: THE BEST OF GOLDEN SMOG[/title]. This 18-song collection also features an alternate version of the fan favorite ("Until You Came Along") and an unreleased Brian Wilson cover ("Love And Mercy.")

interesting there is nothing from their EP on there. i really liked their cover of "easy to be hard".

Borders is carrying a version with three bonus cuts (bringing the total unreleased tracks on this collection to five): "Each and Every Day", "Poor Myleena" and "Winter Song" (in addition to the tracks listed above). All three are good tracks that sound like they're out takes from "Weird Tales" (sadly, the liner notes are identical to the regular version, so no credits on these three songs).

The Borders website isn't listing the three extra bonus tracks, and my local store does not have any copies in stock.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. It may be a "while supplies last" sort of thing, so they don't have the website listing it. I checked with three locations and two of them had them (in Atlanta). Good luck finding one. If you act quick, they have it on sale for $14.99 (down from $16.99).
