Anybody here a fan of Matthew Sweet? Any idea what he's up to? I know his last project was in some sort of "super-group". Was it Pete Yorn, Sweet and that "Lullaby" guy (Shawn Mullins)?

Am I misremembering or was Matthew a member of Mike Myers' group "Ming Tea" from the Austin Powers movies?

If memory serves, Susannah Hoffs (late of the Bangles) was in that group too (not that surprising since she's married to "Austin Powers" director Jay Roach)!

The Thorns are terrific, Rob ~ if you have a hi-rez player, get the SACD in 5.1. Beautiful. It's not very "Sweetlike", though. Sounds more like CSNY or America with Matthew Sweet singing lead, if you can imagine that. (It really is very good!)

His most recent two solo albums were released on little dinkoid labels. Kimi Ga Suki is the classic Sweet sound ~ excellent disc:

Living Things is a "grower", not so immediate. It's more experimental:

I'm a HUGE Matthew Sweet fan, but I couldn't stand the Thorns. Sounded like a bad Eagles cover band to me.

Kimi Ga Suki is a great album, and so is Living Things, but in very different ways. My favorite album is In Reverse, largely due to Carol Kaye's bass playing, especially on I Should Never Have Let You Know.

One of the best shows I ever saw was Sweet at the University of Idaho SUB Ballroom in '96, for the 100% Fun tour. I may still have that T-shirt somewhere, and it may fit again.

Thanks guys. I may pick up the Thorns album if I spot it. I recall sampling it when it came out and passed on it at the time. Didn't realize Sweet had put out anything solo since 'In Reverse'. Must go hunting. Thanks!

By the way, I saw him in '98-ish for the 'Blue Sky On Mars' tour at the Phoenix in Toronto. Great show.

I can see why you might have missed those last two albums. Kimi Ga Suki was initially released only in Japan (with it easily available as an import - I got it for $12 off of Amazon), and Living Things saw him moving to a tiny boutique label with ZERO promotion. His own website doesn't even mention it.

The only thing that drives me crazy about Matthew Sweet, is his ablilty to write the perfect pop song (at least 2 every album) and the inability to even approach a perfect album.

I think In Reverse was. Girlfriend could have been if he'd left off about 3 songs. A svelte, 12-track set leaving off Winona, Your Sweet Voice and Does She Talk would have been breathtaking beginning to end, kind of like Get Happy!! by Elvis & The Attractions. As it is, it kind of drags halfway through side two.

And I get crap from many fans for loving all of Blue Sky On Mars.

I would also say that 'In Reverse' was near perfect. '100% Fun' might not be a perfect album, but it is a damn fine collection of pop singles. As an aside, 'Smog Moon' is a great song.

Hank, you get crap for liking 'Blue Sky'?? You won't get any from me! Now, if you're big on 'Altered Beast', we might have issues.

Haven't heard anything since "100% Fun" and the stuff that I discovered from Austin Powers. A few years ago, I slipped Altered Beast back into my car's CD rotation, but of course I was robbed, and had some of my best discs taken from me in that particular theiving. It's such a violating feeling to come back to your car and see you window shattered ...

Found the shirt this evening, tried it on for the first time in probably eight or nine years, and it fits again! I love my bike.

I remember discovering Mathew Sweet when the video for Girlfriend got some brief play on MTV. It was right about the time of the first big love of my life. I finally got around to buying the Girlfriend CD about the time that relationship ended for me. Good album to listen to and be depressed with a broken heart. Been a big fan of his ever since, and got to catch him opening for Melissa Ethridge once. Did anyone here happen to get the two best of type albums that he put out a year or so ago? One of them had a demo that he did for Girlfriend on it. Very neat to listen to.

Glad to find some fellow fans here.

Brad

I listened to The Thorns again last week, and I think my opinion of it has improved. I still don't think it's as good as most of his solo stuff, but it's better than I gave it credit for.

I think that the main reason I REALLY disliked it when it came out was that he'd just done what I considered to be his masterpiece (In Reverse) and for his next project does something totally different, away from what I'd liked. I think that since he did an album like Living Things, which picks up where In Reverse left off, I'm much more content to view The Thorns in the proper context.

And their cover of the Jayhawks' Blue is amazing. I don't know why I didn't like at least this song when the album came out.

Expanded Girlfriend reissue is on the horizon ...

Matthew Sweet: Girlfriend - Legacy Edition in Stores 6/13

"In 1991, Matthew Sweet rose out of obscurity with Girlfriend, a convention-defying album of blazing rockers and haunting heartbreak ballads that connected with its listeners on a remarkably deep level.

On June 13th, Girlfriend - The Legacy Edition hits stores with three previously unreleased in the US bonus tracks, and includes a second disc containing Girlfriend’s collectors’ item companion piece, Goodfriend. This rare and highly sought-after set features home demos, live performances and Sweet’s renditions of classics from Neil Young and John Lennon - commercially available for the first time ever."

Goodfriend is cool because it contains a recording for BBC Radio of Someone To Pull The Trigger...two years before Altered Beast came out.

And how GREAT is that Sid 'n' Susie album? I've been listening to it 2 or 3 times a day since it came out. My favorite tracks are Different Drum (I like Susie's hoarse vocal on the bridge) and She May Call You Up Tonight (I've been on a Left Banke kick of late and had recently rediscovered the wonder of this song).

It also prompted me to finally break down and get Odessey & Oracle (which has Care of Cell #44), which I've been meaning to get for about 5 years now. AmazWAN (yes, I used the link) shipped it today, along with Village Green Preservation Society.

Linda would be proud of this order.

Our music collections look very similar, Hank. Odessey & Oracle is terrific. Did you get the regular Village Green or the 3-disc deluxe set?

It was $11, so I doubt it was 3 discs....remarkably, this is the first Kinks album I've ever bought. I picked it because I got hooked on the HP ads with "Picture Book."
