Sort of, anyway.

Because of somebody's overzealous attempt to clean out the BBC archives in the early '70s, as many of you know, huge chunks of the history of Doctor Who are missing. Probably half of the second Doctor stories are missing altogether, and three-quarters are missing at least one episode. However, recordings of the complete soundtracks exist for every episode, so fans have made reconstructions using "telesnaps" - pictures taken during broadcast that approximate the action. The BBC has made their own of a few stories and released them as CD-ROMs.

However, the BBC has commissioned a British studio to animate (IN B&W!) the two missing episodes (parts one and four) of 1968's 8-part Cybermen story, "The Invasion" so the complete story can be released on DVD. It's due in the UK this November.

They have a brief preview at http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cul ... 3077.shtml

It looks frickin' cool.

It DOES look cool and it opens up a whole new world of possibilities in regards to the adventures they're missing in the series. I'm really hoping we see a complete, animated "Dalek Master Plan" at some point in the future....

Really looking forward to this.

There was something on TV recently where they had an actor playing Hitler and using some software they CGI'd Hitler's face over the actors real face.

I did not see this myself so don't know how realistic it looked but I do live in hope that they could eventually reconstruct live action versions of the lost stories. The good news of course is we still have audio copies of the lost stories.

News on the animation front!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/20 ... .doctorwho

Basically, the BBC has said that they can't afford to animate the rest of the lost episodes, so a group of fans has formed to animate themselves, using video-game style 3D animation.

Quality is about like a video game cutscene, but ultimately, looks somewhat OK. Unlike The Invasion, these are in color.

The linked article has some samples.

Although their hearts are in the right place, the animation and artwork in general is not up to the quality of what they did in the Invasion and it's also a bit off-putting that they go between flash animation and sub par computer graphics and finally, they said they didn't want to update it yet they went color. Part of the magic with what they did on Invasion was they really worked that black and white and the contrast within. Color just doesn't seem right with these. Maybe a better use of the fans time and talent would be getting together and paying the guys who did the Invasion to do these. I don't know, even if they did, then you'd have the problem of the BBC spending money to put the finished product out and I doubt they would, nor would they let these guys get it to the public. The Beeb can be a bunch o sticklers about that. Bless the fans for trying anyhow.
