ET breaks the news that comedian George Carlin has died from heart failure. The man who made famous the "seven words you can never say on television" passed away at 5:55 p.m. Sunday at Saint John's Hospital in Santa Monica, his longtime publicist said. He was 71.

Carlin, who has had several heart attacks and a history of cardiac issues, went into the hospital this afternoon after complaining of heart problems.

Very sad. His comedy filled almost every possibility, from the days he was a straight laced suit and tie guy to the guy that gave us 7 words you can't use on television to running the Shining Time Station. He lived a full life, and I, for one, will miss him.

RIP George.

Drat. I'd say something stronger, but we are in the playroom.

Now I'm sad.

Aw hell! This is terrible, terrible news. George Carlin was an amazing force in the world of comedy. Goerge never failed to make me laugh. AND to make me think. Only a select few comedians can really hit you like that.

I wish he had been around for another 10 or 20 years. But it's good we got the time we did. george could have died many years ago when he was in his drug using days.

One of the greats is gone.

I though my first post on getting home would be regarding Heroes Con, and this is the first thing I see. I'm heartbroken. I have loved George since AM/FM. My all time favorite, hands down. This truly hurts.

Rest easy, George.

Ya done real good, and I love ya.

A comedic genius and a lover of words. My favorite combination.

Thank you, George. RIP

A tremendous loss.

He was one of a kind.

Understatement of the year. George would not want anybody
to pray for him, but I'll do it anyway. He will be sorely missed.

P.S. I think Carlin would be upset that his memorial thread is
in the Playroom. Could we move this downstairs? Anyway, I
have to get going...

Even though I often disagreed with his point, he always made me laugh.

I rarely disagreed with his points.

And he made me laugh all the more because of it.

I remember first encountering his work when I was 13 or so. My brother in-law had several of Carlin's comedy albums. I was staying at my sister's for most of that summer, and out of boredom I dropped one of these on the turntable. I wasn't bored after that.

Years later, I saw him live twice at the Westbury Music Fair on Long Island. Two great shows, two great memories.

I'm really going to miss the man, and am sad that we won't get any more of his hilariously wry observations.

This is, to me, devastating news. George Carlin was one of my idols. His work has influenced my life in many ways.

I didn't even make it into work today.

I was shocked and saddened to hear on the radio this morning that he had passed away. He was one of the greats.

RIP George!
