For those of us old timers who started reading comics in the 70's who was your favorite artist at the time?
I think for me it was probably Berni Wrightson.

I think Byrne was the first name I recognized, but the first not-a-comic-but-comic-related book I ever bought was The Art of Neal Adams (vol. 2). The only other "Art of ..." book I ever bought was John Byrne's.

I was a big Byrne fan too but I really liked what he did more in the 80's.
The first name I became aware of as being a good artist was Curt Swan.

Dick Dillin for his JLA work is #1. Irv Novick is my 2nd choice for Flash Jim Aparo 3rd for his JLA Curt Swan is tied for 4th for Superman And as I discovered later in life, Jose Garcia Lopez for his 70s Superman is also 4th.

to many to pick just one...
Neal Adams
John Buscema
Berni Wrightson
Mike Grell
Howard Chaykin
John Byrne
George Perez (his work on the teen titans in the Early 80's made him my favorite even over Byrne)
Mike Zeck (his Punisher work in the Mid 80s)
Walt Simonson (his Thor work in the Mid 80s)

For some reason I really enjoyed Billy Graham's work on Hero for Hire. He worked on the first 16 or so issues either Pencils and Inks or Inks over George Tuska.

Cool, he had time to draw some comics when he wasn't preaching to stadiums full of people. No problem picking a favorite for me. Hands down, no contest John Byrne. I also liked Neal, and Jim Aparo, and Swan, and both Buscemas, and BWS, and Wrightson, and Starlin, and Perez.

Neal Adams, Craig Russell, John Byrne -- I'd buy cereal boxes if these guys drew them. Now Craig is the only guy on that list.

Jim Aparo and John Buscema are my favorite super-hero artists, but the guy I'd most love to see make a comeback is Frank Brunner.

In college Craig Russell pencilled half a Dr Strange story on spec, which Roy Thomas bought. He told Steve Englehart to use it some time. Craig opened Dr Strange #1 and said, hey, look they're using my story -- then saw that Frank Brunner was credited as the artist. The first page of this issue and many subsequent panels were right out of Craig's pages! Craig called Thomas and put a stop to it. His story (with a different splash page) was eventually printed as a Dr Strange Annual, which he later redrew to fit more of his original vision as a 48-page book in the 90s -- he threatens to draw it again someday to include a few other unfinished scenes.

My favorite comics, when I was reeeally young, I later learned were reprints of older Kirby and Ditko -- "World's Greatest Comics" and "Marvel Tales," etc.
The first artists whose names I noticed were Ditko and Ploog (How not to notice magnificent names like those?), then Staton and Kubert.

For me, John Byrne. Uncanny X-Men #115. First introduction to that creative team and that group of characters.
I also had a copy of editor Denny O'Neill's 'Secret Origins of the Super DC Heroes,' with a beautiful cover by Neal Adams (who was unknown to me at the time). Wish they'd reprint that book, as it had the first appearances of all the DC superheroes by their original creators. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, both Green Lanterns, both Flashes, both Atoms, Captain Marvel, and some others. Wonderful book! Absolutely read it to pieces...

Neal Adams' work continues to be something to aspire to. I also really dug Berni Wrightson's horror material.

I didn't know a lot of artists by name during the 70s, but Kirby was my favorite at the time.

In no particular order:
John Byrne
George Perez
Jack Kirby
Neal Adams
Paul McCartney and Wings
The Eagles
Mel Brooks
Neil Simon
George Olshevsky
Billy Joel
The guy who put together those "Mighty Marvel Fun Book" things! I LOVED those!
