He was channeling Gil Kane there I think.

Somewhere in my collection, I own a comic that features that ad. Maybe even several.

It looks quite familiar to me.

According to the interview in the Art of John Byrne book, Byrne did one too.

I love how they felt obliged to put "Advertisement" at the top -- as though people would actually be confused into believing it was part of the regular story. Because the Human Torch often uses Hostess Fruit Pies in his arsenal against the forces of evil.

I don't believe I've ever seen that particular Hostess ad. Glad to see it was an actual ad, and not some gross parody of it. That's kind of what I was expecting from the title.

So, does anyone know who did the one where the Hulk battled a magician who turned himself into a Godzilla-sized frog? For some reason that was my favorite.

It is interesting.

Most scientific journals charge a page cost for publishing papers. SO you submit the paper, they review it, you have to edit/modify it, and in the end they say, sure, we will publish it. (Yeah, this is what we need to do as scientists).

Then they say, you have to pay $100/page to defray publishing costs. No biggie, it is in the budget. But the interesting thing is that hte following text is appended to the first page of the paper:

"The publication costs of this article were defrayed in part by page charge payment. Therefore, and solely to indicate this fact, this article is hereby marked "advertisement" in accordance with 18 USC section 1734"

18 USC Section 1734

Sec. 1734. Editorials and other matter as "advertisements"

Whoever, being an editor or publisher, prints in a publication
entered as second class mail, editorial or other reading matter for
which he has been paid or promised a valuable consideration,
without plainly marking the same "advertisement" shall be fined
under this title.

EFFECTIVE DATE
Section effective Sept. 1, 1960, see section 11 of Pub. L.
86-682.

How this works, and why ads for cars and miniature soldiers doesnt need to have text saying "advertisement" I dont know.

But often times, there is an additional section in the paper about Saudi Arabia, which will be labeled "advertisement" so perhaps it has more to do with material that could be mistaken for "editorial or reading material" as opposed to a car ad.

I like that ad a lot better than most of his recent commissions.
