Captain America movie will be set in World War II

Thursday May 22, 2008, 8:09 am

Marvel’s Captain America movie, planned for a May 2011 release, will be a period film, set during World War II.

So says Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who spoke to online journalists yesterday at Universal Studios about The First Avenger: Captain America and other projects.

That would seem to imply the movie will stay at least relatively true to the character’s comic-book origin, and tie directly into the Super-Soldier Serum references in The Incredible Hulk.

On that note, Feige confirmed speculation about a certain object glimpsed in a laboratory scene from Iron Man: Yes, that’s Captain America’s shield.

He also provided a few more details on Thor, saying that it will take place largely in Asgard, mythical home of the Norse gods: “”The film is not all Asgard, but it will be a big chunk in Asgard, yeah.”

Screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell) is expected to submit a draft of the script in a couple of weeks.

I must have missed the shield.

Why would Stark have it?

Perhaps he does the modifications on it that allows Cap to throw it and recover it as he does in the comics.

I'm not sure how I'll feel about the WW2 thing, but I suppose I'll like anything that's well-done. I think I'd have liked it better if it was set when he woke up from the deep freeze, but we'll see.

It's all about synergy.

I am really pleased that Marvel Studios is taking that approach.

Captain America takes place in WW2.

Unfrozen in the Avengers Flick.

Stark made the new shield.

Synergy.

I like it.

Especially if we get to see the chevron shaped shield in action. I just like that look for him with no neck piece and the chevron shaped shield.

But I'd be willing to play along with the Stark inventing the round shield. I'd REALLY be on board if he was working on a alloy for his armor one night and he fell asleep mixing two different metals and came up with the disk shape, but didn't know how.

But my guess is that Cap gets the disk shaped shield just before he gets blown into suspended animation. The only thing left it seems is the shield. So Stark naturally wants it to study it so maybe he can figure out how it was made so he can use the formula for his armor. When he meet up with Cap later, it's returned to him.

I, quite honestly, could not disagree more.

I think they can pull off a period piece. Private Ryan was a period piece, and granted, I understand we're talking super heroes here, but I still think they can do it. It will be like a comic book mini series that's linked thru different titles. You don't have to get all the cross overs to get the Avengers story, but it will enhance the story.

I like both of those bits of news. Period piece and Asgard. Exactly what I hoped to see from these upcoming flicks.

So it's probably a clear bet that Captain America ends with him getting blasted into the ocean, and the potential Avengers flick will have the thaw.

That's pretty awesome.

Agreed.

It's the perfect starting point for the Avengers flick.

Having Thor in Asgard leading into the Avengers flick will also make for a good sense of wildly differing heroes coming together in an at-first uneasy alliance.

WHEN CAPTAIN AMERICA THROWS HIS MIGHTY EASTER EGG

* By Devin Faraci
* Published 05/12/2008

"Alex Billington of First Showing.net thinks he's discovered something in the background of a shot in Iron Man. After seeing the movie four (!!!!) times, Alex is convinced that he has seen nothing less than the shield belonging to Captain America himself. Alex says that the shield pops up in the background during the scene when the robots are having a hard time getting Tony out of the Iron Man armor, after his trip back to Afghanistan.

Alex has provided a screencap from the trailer that he says makes his case. As someone who has spent years interested in UFOs, Bigfoot and ghosts, this is all very familiar; the image does indeed sort of look like it could be Captain America's shield, but I'm not sure that I would have thought that unless Alex brought my attention to it. It also looks like it could be the convergence of lighting and clutter on Tony's desk.

But let's say, for the sake of argument, that it is the shield. Alex loses me when he begins to dissect what this could mean:"

I can't figure out if this is really Stan Lee or not. The link says "fake", but there's an interesting page posted there.

WHEN CAPTAIN AMERICA THROWS HIS MIGHTY SHIELD...

"ITEM! Yes, it’s true, Tiger. That is Captain America’s shield sitting on Tony Stark’s lab bench in that boffo box-office bonanza, Iron Man. Frantic Ones everywhere have discovered one of Jonny Favreau’s earnest easter eggs serendipitously slipped into the scenery (see pic above). An easter egg that was digitally painted out of the trailers and previews, I might add. Read the whole story here and here."

This is a good idea - it's really the only way to pull of the costume with any legitimacy... and I think we all have a good idea of what the final scene will be.

I think the thaw will come at the end of the Cap film, but the reveal of who has found him will come in the Avengers movie.
