I'll be seeing Rush for my 18th time on July 4 in Atlantic City, and now news of a new live album-cool! A DVD filmed in Europe is also coming out soon. I will, of course eagerly purchase both, although Snakes & Arrows (see thread here) was only a decent effort to me. From Melodicrock.com and the Rush website:

RUSH LIVE CD AND NEW TOUR FOR 2008:
More from Toronto - this from Rush:
"After a hugely successful 2007 tour, the fans have spoken and they want more. Rush officially announce dates for their extended 2008 Snakes & Arrows World Tour. The tour will kick off with their first ever appearance in San Juan, Puerto Rico April 11 and hit over 45 cities throughout the United States and Canada. For Rush fans this will be the first time in over a decade the band will make stops in Orlando, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Reno, Moline, Boise, Austin, Jacksonville and Winnipeg to name a few. Also for the first time in years the band will play Albuquerque, Edmonton, Vancouver, Hershey and Manchester.
The 2008 tour dates and venues are listed below. Tickets for New Orleans, Reno, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver and Detroit go on sale Saturday January 26.
American Express Cardmembers will also have the opportunity to purchase advance tickets January 26th through February 1st for Rush performances in Boston; Chicago, Ft. Lauderdale, Holmdel, Wantagh and January 27th through February 2nd in Los Angeles and Irvine. In addition there will be a Musictoday fan club presale for all Rush performances in conjunction with rush.com starting January 22 through January 24.
A Snakes And Arrows Live CD will be released sometime in April. Details are forthcoming. In addition, the track Malignant Narcissism from the band's 2007 release Snakes & Arrows (Anthem/Atlantic) has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the category Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Fans will experience the technical virtuosity and hard-rocking compositions they have come to expect from Rush members, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart. In addition the band will update their set list for the 2008 tour. The Rush tour in North America is produced by Live Nation Global Touring and SRO/Anthem.
For complete tour & ticket information, fan club presales and more, visit: http://www.rush.com & http://www.livenation.com.

From Blabbermouth.net:

According to a posting on the RUSH fan site Power Windows, RUSH will release a new live two-CD set, "Snakes & Arrows Live", on April 8. Although it has not been announced, a two-DVD set is expected to be released late summer.

The 2008 leg of the "Snakes & Arrows" tour will kick off on April 11 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and will conclude July 22 in Atlanta, Georgia. South American dates have not yet been announced.

RUSH's 18th studio album, "Snakes & Arrows", debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard album chart with sales of 93,000 copies. The disc is the first collection of all-new RUSH material since 2002's "Vapor Trails" and the 27th RUSH release to make the Billboard album chart. The band's chart peak was in 1993, when "Counterparts" debuted at No. 2.

John:
Although Rush will always be my favorite band and I'll never stop seeing them, I'm alarmed at the ticket prices this tour. In Philly, tix are only $90 and $128, in AC, they're $67, $90 and $150 and in at the PNC in Holmdel, they're $33 (lawn), $67 and $90 or so. What did you pay for your tix?
I'm glad to see Rush getting top dollar for their sake, but I think promoters got in their ears and said "Guys, you're still huge, now get out there and gouge these damn fans this time around!".
Even at $33, after fees, the lawn seats at Holmdel will be $50. Even though it's a 90 minute drive I think that's what we're doing. Sigh...
And to think, I'm seeing UFO for $20 at the Starland Ballroom in April-well, club shows are better anyway!

I got pretty good $65 seats in section 9R which is right in the middle of the Jones Beach Theater just above the floor seats. Actually this is the best place in that arena to see a show.

Jimbo is going with me.

And the tracklisting is (looks almost complete from the show I saw last year, although Summertime Blues is missing and maybe something else, but what a setlist this was)...

From melodicrock.com:

The new Rush Double Live album Snakes & Arrows Live is out April 8, featuring the following track list:
Disc 1 - 01. Limelight, 02. Digital Man, 03. Entre Nous, 04. Mission, 05. Freewill, 06. Monkey Business, 07. Larger Bowl, 08. Secret Touch, 09. Circumstances, 10. Between the Wheels, 11. Dreamline, 12. Far Cry, 13. Workin' Them Angels, 14. Armor and Sword.
Disc 2 - 01. Spindrift, 02. The Way the Wind Blows, 03. Subdivisions, 04. Natural Science, 05. Witch Hunt, 06. Malignant Narcissism + Drum Solo, 07. Hope, 08. Distant Early Warning, 09. The Spirit of Radio, 10. Tom Sawyer, 11. One Little Victory, 12. A Passage to Bangkok, 13. YYZ.

P.S.
Those hideous prices were only for the presale where I guess it's cool to screw the loyal fans. We ended up paying $45 for our seats-a price that was not offered for the presale, instead of $90-the cheapest for the presale. Anyway, we're on board for my 18th Rush show!

It's in the subject line of this thread, Mark ~ April 8th, and the pre-order link is in the first post.

their past live releases from 'show of hands' on have had far too much crowd noise mixed in for my taste.
(the extra 'farewell to kings' era live disc that came with it was a much better live mix imo)

i hope they seriously tone it down for this one. they're def one of the most state of the art sounding bands
i've ever heard live in a live situation. i really want to hear more of them and less of the crowd.

peace,
joebase

I agree with most of this, but not "Different Stages" which is one of the best sounding live albums I've ever heard. The crowd is quite low in the mix on that one. The sound quality is outstanding on that release. However, I can't even listen to "Rush In Rio", although they explain why it came out like that due to equipment problems, but despite a great performance in front of an enthusiastic crowd, I can't even get through the first song.
The bonus live discs that came with the "R30" DVD were pretty good, and certainly better than "Rush In Rio", but I agree, let's hear the band and not the audience on this one!

Any thoughts on this one now that it's been released? The samples I heard from their recent "Rockline" appearance certainly seemed to suffer from an overabundance of crowd noise in the mix, a problem with other recent live Rush...

This is a good sounding cd, but in all honesty, I think the " Rush in Rio " disc is one of the best live recordings I've ever heard. You actually feel like your there, part of this exciting show. Live recordings are, in my opinion, starting to sound too clean, too clinical, to the point they sound like they are studio recordings. And FYI- live recordings are my favorite mode of music. I always look for a live show from a artist, because you can't hide live.

Actually, these days you can hide live - with all of the in studio shenanigans: punching in new vocals, solos etc. Perfect example is the live performance of Lamb Lies Down on Broadway on the Genesis Archive Vol.1 release. There are extensive vocal and guitar dubs all throughout this. The original of this concert is on Wolfgang's Vault so you can do the comparison. It is a great performance and recording and I'm not bothered in the least by the revised version. But it's done a lot more than you think, and the editing method is a lot better than it used to be.

Another example: Song Remains the Same. Check this out for a mind-boggling live editing extravaganza:

I think Rush In Rio is Rush's worst-sounding live album. I find it painful to listen to. I don't know if it's the mix, the mastering or both, but it has only gotten one or two listens since its release.

I'm with ya CBK-I stated earlier that "Rush In Rio" is painful. The band did not intentionally have the album come out that way-the recording equipment in Brazil was awful and severe rain made it even worse. They figured they spent all that time and money, so they'd put it out. I can't even listen to it and I worship Rush.
I've seem 'em live 17 times, and #18 will be in June-but if their shows sounded like "Rush In Rio" I'd never go again.
Also, almost every band has cheated on live albums, even the very best and most legendary live albums such as Kiss' "Alive", Thin Lizzy's "Live And Dangerous", Peter Gabriel's "Plays Live" and Judas Priest's "Unleashed In The East" have all been doctored in the studio.
There are a few exceptions like Deep Purple's "Made In Japan" and Dire Straits' "Live Alchemy", but very few.
"Snakes And Arrows Live" is a very good live album, but the best sound without a doubt is "Different Stages Live" which I listen to all the time. Like CBK, I've listened to "Rush In Rio" but twice. I'm glad some people enjoy it though, because it's Rush and it was an awesome show.
