Ever been? Tell me about your experience.
I'm kind of interested in going, maybe. The tour prices are swell, looks to be extensive but safe cave "exploration," it's in a national park with camping, and it's not obscenely far from me. Looks to be about 12 hours away, maybe a touch longer. That's not awful.

I haven't been for a few years, but I guarantee you will enjoy your time there. They offer a variety of cave tours, from the hard-core "wild cave" expeditions where you get to wear a helmet with a light and crawl through stuff like narrow tunnels and water, to the basic "family package", where you walk in as a group tour and learn about the caves. If they still have it, there's one place where they converted part of the cave into a restaurant, that's kind of fun. Tired of caving? There are loads of trails and such to hike around on.
Side note, if you plan to do that wild cave tour, you need to reserve a spot well in advance, so consider that.

When I lived in Tennessee some years back I went to the park once. But I only saw the park area, not the cave. The park above ground is quite beautiful. As you drive through it there are places where you get the unusual (nowadays) experience of crossing streams on a cable ferry.
As for the cave, I've only heard good things about it. If it's anything like Carlsbad Caverns, it must be fantastic.

My parents and I tried to go just before I entered junior high. We ended up at Mammoth Onyx Cave instead. It was a nice experience, but I would like to see the real thing sometime. I have always been a bit leery of going back since I heard they have a place called "fat man's misery." My blubber shudders at the thought!

There are places called that at most cavern parks, some more evil than others. You don't have to go through this one, there are far more than just one cave tour at Mammoth.

Sad to say that I have never been. But I think we will go soon, maybe even this summer.

There is a very good chance we'll go here this summer. Just saw there is a hotel right there in the park. That's cool. We skipped out normal vacation and I can sure use some time away.

I went there with my family almost 30 years ago. Needless to sayI don't remember much specific about it, but I remember we thought it was really cool at the time. Have fun!

Odd. Must be the time of year. I just noticed the date of when I first posted this.
