I hate that f*cking song. Seriously. It makes me cry every time I hear it. Then it makes me incredibly guilty.

I'm prepared to have to beat the auto-contrarian out of him in his teens.

It's a myth that I am auto-contrarian.

Try playing the Ugly Kid Joe cover version. That should evoke different emotions rather than sadness and guilt.

Harry Chapin's wife actually wrote those lyrics and presented them to him as a means of explaining what was actually happening with his own children.

He was so touched by it that he set it to music, and it turned out to be his biggest hit.

And yes, Harry had some better songs, but that in no way diminishes what a great song this is.

Me too.
I once heard it on the radio on the way to English class in 1973(?), cried because I had recently
came to the sad realization that I was physically stronger and mentally quicker than my ailing, aging, father. I cut the class and used my emotions as an excuse to hang out and smoke some XXXX at eight in the morning. The next day I wrote about that realization in a BS paper called "The Saddest Day In Every Male's Life". I got an A.
Thanks, Harry!
Thanks, dad.

That's a great story to share with us Tommy.I think we all get to have those same thoughts about our parents at some stage, and the sad feeling of eventually losing them.

I am currently going thru some difficulties with my son ( he's 17) and I am profoundly touched by this song.... I have to say that the main problem is that we ARE so much alike... being a single dad, I've raised him right and proper, but we are close friends as well as father and son, so I think it blurs the line a bit when it comes to responsibilty and authority. I'm hoping things work out, I havent talked to my dad in 16 years. Don't want that for me and my son.
Gah, sometimes I just ramble on...
