The Kooks preview new material at star-studded LA show

Feb 8, 2008

The Kooks previewed new material from their forthcoming album for a packed, star-studded house at the Troubadour in Los Angeles last night (February 7).

This was the first of three exclusive US gigs the Brighton band are playing this week to road-test the new material before announcing a larger American tour to support their sophomore album 'Konk'.

The band began their hour-long set with songs from their first album 'Inside In/Inside Out'. They kicked off the night with 'See The World', after which several girls in the front row screamed 'We love you, Luke!'

Frontman Luke Pritchard, dressed In tight black jeans and a flowing white shirt, seemed more comfortable as the evening went on, loosening up mid-set and gyrating on stage like a young Mick Jagger.

"We got in town a few days ago, so thanks for making us feel welcome," Pritchard told the audience, which included Courtney Love and her daughter Frances Bean Cobain, as well as members of The Thrills and The Zutons.

Meanwhile, scalpers touted tickets to the sold-out gig for a small fortune outside the venue.

Cat The Dog bassist Dan Logan filled in on bass for Max Rafferty, who recently left the band.

Later in the evening, The Kooks played new material including the upbeat 'Mr Maker' and the more introspective 'Sway'.

They ended the night with a three-song encore featuring two solo numbers by Pritchard and his acoustic guitar, after which he said, "Let's have it on this one--we've come all the way from England!" before bringing back the band for the rousing 'Sofa Song'.

San Francisco newcomers The Morning Benders kicked off the night with a lively, competent set.

"We've been cooped up in a box (recording) so we're excited to go out and play," Pritchard told NME.COM before the show. "We want to drag everyone back into our music."

The Kooks played:

'Ooh La'
'Time Awaits'
'Mr Maker'
'Love It All'
'I Want You'
'She Moves'
'Do You Wanna'
'Sway'
'Naïve'
'You Don't Love Me'
'Seaside'
'Jackie Big Tits'
'Sofa Song'

The Kooks are set to play a sold-out show at The Echo in Los Angeles tonight (February 8) and at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York on February 12.

[title]Konk[/title] was recorded over a six week period at the tail-end of 2007 in Ray Davies’ Konk Studios in north London, plus a week at Los Angeles’ Sound Factory. The sessions once again united the group with esteemed producer Tony Hoffer (Beck/Air/The Fratellis). Explaining how he came to suggest the album title, guitarist Hugh says, ‘I just started thinking how cool the studio is, and how much of a part of our sound it is.’

‘Konk’ features twelve tracks. There’s ‘Gap’ which is classic Kooks, and ‘Shine On’ which finds Luke exploring hitherto unchartered lyrical territory over the loveliest of melodies. It’s destined to become another lynchpin in The Kooks’ live set. First single ‘Always Where I Need To Be’ is a tumbling rocker with a ‘do-do-do, do-do-do-do’ refrain that might just be the catchiest thing they’ve ever done. ‘Sway’ and ‘Mr Maker’ are other album highlights.

1. See The Sun
2. Always Where I Need To Be
3. Mr. Maker
4. Do You Wanna
5. Gap
6. Love It All
7. Stormy Weather
8. Sway
9. Shine On
10. Down To the Market
11. One Last Time
12. Tick Of Time (+ hidden track 'All Over Town')

Hi.
I picked up the Kooks first CD while visiting my daughter in London last winter. I, uh, bought it on the strength of the cover photo...a bunch of earnest, uh, younger guitarists playing in a room with the drummer in another room adjacent. Just like I used to do!
Sampling the disc in the HMV in Angel, London (it was amazing just to be in a city with SEVERAL THRIVING CD stores!!) it sounded energetic and just magnificent. After a few months back in NYC...it sounded like precious power-pop...crafted, earnest...but not especially "dirty under the fingernails..." I grew disappointed and grav'ed towards Bloc Party "A Weekend In the City" as being another souvenir of our visit...with a bit more gravitas!...Soon got tired of their angular but still brilliant if brittle playing!
Bottom line: two great bands from England...I hope that the long layoff I gave the Kooks...mixed with the chance to soon hear new music...will make me like them again.
The mere mention of the band on this amazing music board gives that issue a spark! If other here are fans...pls start the Gary therapy now! I really WANT to LIKE these guys!

Thanks Linda!

There is also a "deluxe" edition of Konk that includes a bonus disc with 9 extra tracks. (The bonus disc is apparently titled RAK--I wonder if this is a tribute to the UK label that was home to several glam bands in the 70s). I picked up a copy today at Virgin for $9.99. Bonus tracks:

1. Watching The Ships Roll In
2. Eaten By Your Lover
3. No Longer
4. Fa La La La La La
5. Nothing Ever Changes
6. By My Side
7. Hatful Of Love
8. See The Sun (Alternate Version)

I loved the first Kooks album. Has the new one been pushed back? Amazon sent me an email that it had been delayed in my order but they haven't changed the release date on their site.

The band almost didn't make it to this second album ...

The Kooks considered splitting in January

Apr 4, 2008

The Kooks have revealed they considered splitting up when bassist Max Rafferty quit this January.

Rafferty departed the Brighton rockers a few months after returning to the band following a bout of illness.

Singer Luke Pritchard told the The Sun's Something For The Weekend: "Splitting does go through your mind. It's hard to let go of something you care about so much. We have fans to think of.

"I don’t want to go into what the difficulties were [with Max]. It's all too fresh for us, and it is hard for Max, way more than it is for us. I haven’t spoken to him since and thought he should be left to get on with things. I hope we are still friends."

Prichard also discussed the addition of temporary bassist Dan Logan to the band, previously of Brighton band Cat The Dog, saying: "It's been really strange for us but it's something that had to happen. Dan hasn’t joined the band properly yet. We're trying him out, but I love playing with him."

The Kooks: 'Bassist's departure was down to drugs'

Apr 10, 2008

The Kooks have blamed bassist Max Rafferty's recent departure on his drug addiction.

Rafferty left the Brighton rockers a few months after returning to the band following a bout of illness.

As previously reported on NME.COM, the band said they considered splitting when the bassist quit in January.

Singer Luke Pritchard told Orange: "Max was in and out for a long time and we kind of made the decision that we wanted to carry on without him. Things got a bit much for him, I think.

"He was struggling [with] various issues [including] his anxieties and taking drugs probably a lot more than he should have been doing or wanted to be doing.

"Not to get some fucking violin out, but it can be really difficult being in a band, especially when you're like that. Max is the greatest guy in the world but he just didn't really know how to stop."

More than a tribute, they actually recorded the bonus disc at RAK Studios. :)
