Let me say up front that I prefer modern coloring to old school flat colors. When I'm reading an older comic I often wonder what they would look like with modern coloring, and how the art would compare to modern artists. I understand that not everyone feels that way.

Also, I'm a mediocre amateur colorist, so this is more my doing it for fun than anything else.

All that said, I wanted to color a sequential page and I wanted to color a Ditko Spider-Man page, so this accomplished both goals. I'm not thrilled with how it turned out (I'm way out of practice), but I still kind of like it.

I like modern coloring better but old school doesn't bother me, even on the stuff reprinted on modern high quality paper. I do find it very interesting to see how people would have colored the old stuff in todays style, so I look forward to more posts in this thread not by me. :)

Thanks!

I'm working on a Don Heck/Romeo Tahngal page from JLA #207 now. I'm hoping folks like Gerry, Rick, Derek, and maybe even Victoria and Ian if they have time, will post some pages.

I'm not sure where you can get Hi-res scans, but I'm used to working with Lo-res pics so I'm just getting them off of Comic Art Fans.

I guess I'll be doing some cross posting. I just recieved some commissions to re-color some old 70's movie and romance comics pages. Overall, your Spidey page has a nice painterly style. Keep up the good work.

Wondering what you guys think of the new trend of, when showing a flashback or story that takes place in the past, it will be colored, sometimes even drawn, in an old school manner (sometimes even with dots) and then the part of the story that is present day is done in present day style?

I think it works ok, but like with anything, it could get annoying if done every single time.

I actually do like that. They've done it in the most recent Ms. Marvel and Mighty Avengers issues, even doing old school thought balloons and captions. It's fun.

I like the effect as well. I suppose there could be a point where it could be overkill, but I haven't reached it yet.

They've used that plot device as far back as Alias and the first Sentry miniseries.

That effect is cool.

I tend to prefer when a more monochrome look is done, but that's just referencing an old look to another media (photography and film). If anything, this new trend is 'truer' to the roots of funnybooks. If you are into that sorta thing.

Somewhere on this board is my colouring of a five-page sequence from an old issue of The Tomb of Dracula...

I might post a bit of the old-school stuff I've done so far, but it's mostly covers and pin-ups, not much in the way of sequentials. :)

I use quite a bit of different resources for getting ahold of lineart, mostly it's trough online sites tho.

Here, why don't I share with you some of my different resources?

Heritage Comic Auction Gallerys
-------------------------------------------------
http://comics.ha.com/

Albert Moy comic-art
--------------------------------
http://www.albertmoy.com/ArtistGalleryR ... tistId=544

What If... Kirby? ( this one is PURE gold! You wont believe what you will find here, in high-rez too, if you're willing to put in some work)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.whatifkirby.com/

Romita Man
-------------------

I'm afraid that I have to admit that sometimes different p2p programs and such come quite in handy for getting ahold of sequentials too... DC++ and IRC with their presence of a certain infamous "Comics Preservation" -organisation has some options for finding daily Strip-comics, such as Burne Hogarth and Russ Manning's Tarzan.

It should also, finally, be noted that the owners showcasing art at sites like ComicartFans, can sometimes be very positive towards supplying you with a more high-rez scan, if you ask very nicely, in a courteous manor, via e-mail. :)
This is something I've just began to notice myself, and is something that I've made my new official strategy for getting ahold of comic-art.

Glad I could help with some links and tips. :)

Matt, I hope you don't mind if I give a few small crits on your Spidey-page? ( I'm going to be colouring a Dr Strange page myself, first battle with Dormammu, so feel free to give me a good one on the ears then, lol!)

You've got some good, nice coherent discreet shading going on in the first few panels, but those last two, I think you lose the concepts. The sky looks kind of strange and muddy, and Spidey is coloured in with some rather dark tones, wich sadly lacks a bit of contrast. Perhaps it could have been helped by adding some discreet highlights here and there.

BTW, I'm going to post some of my old work right now, so feel free to tell me what you guys think, even if it's not necessarily something super-positive.

Hal Foster Prince Valiant Sunday-strip panel
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Image

Alfredo Alcala Conan ( not completed actually)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Image

Frank Frazetta Tarzan Dum-dum ( incomplete)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Image

Jack Kirby - Silver Surfer greens and blues
----------------------------------------------------------------
Image

Fantastic Four #64 ( haven't completed this one yet, for some reason)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image

THOR(!) Marvel-mania ( not completed..)
----------------------------------------------------------
Image

Steve Ditko - Spider-man vs Vulture
----------------------------------------------------
Image

Fantastic Four #72
-----------------------------
Image

Thor #144
---------------
Image

Tales To Astonish #79 ( wow... another incomplete.. :( )
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image

John Buscema Namor ( I really need to colour something else by Buscema, maybe Conan?)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image

Now... the big question is, wich one of these should I complete first..? LOL!
