From Blabbermouth.net: (This seems like a comp the band has nothing to do with-some albums are ignored such as Kiss Unmasked-where's "Shandi"? Nothing from "The Elder" or "Alive II". Maybe this is the 3 crappy Millenium collections in one package?) :

Another KISS compilation that a die-hard KISS fan doesn't need to buy. I think this will bring my grand total up to 5.

If you combined the tracks, this would probably fit on two CDs.

Bingo! You've hit the jackpot. Here's a humorous article on the multitude of KISS kompilations.

Awwwright! Kiss Slaps Three Budget Comps Together And Calls It A New Box Set

You wanted the expensive repackaging, you got the expensive repackaging! Kiss will release a new three-CD box set, Playlist Plus, on April 29. The tracklisting to said box just happens to feature the exact same songs that appeared on the three volumes of that discount staple 20th Century Masters: The Millenium that they put out in '03, '04 and '06 respectively. Why? Cuz you people deserve to give yourself a round of applause! Would you like to know just how many times these songs have been featured on albums and compilations? For reasons I can't quite explain, I bothered to figured it out.

Disc 1:
1. Strutter (Kiss, Alive, Kiss Symphony: Alive IV, Double Platinum, Double Platinum, Smashes Thrashes And Hits, Greatest Kiss, The Box Set, The Very Best Of Kiss, The Best of Kiss: The Millennium Collection, Gold)

4. C'mon and Love Me (Hotter Than Hell, Alive, Double Platinum, The Box Set, The Very Best Of Kiss, The Best of Kiss: The Millennium Collection, Gold)

5. Rock and Roll All Nite (Dressed To Kill Alive, Alive III, Kiss Symphony: Alive IV, Double Platinum, Killers, Smashes Thrashes And Hits, You Wanted The Best You Got The Best, Greatest Kiss, The Box Set, The Very Best Of Kiss, The Best of Kiss: The Millennium Collection, Gold)

That was pretty damn funny-and sad too. In all fairness to KISS, this most likely had nothing to do with them as did the last few comps, as they haven't been with Universal since 2001 or so. Not that Gene will mind $ome extra ca$h.

I can't imagine this "box set" moving a lot of units. This stuff has compiled and anthologized to death. I think the last comp they had any real involvement with was the real box set from 2001.

In fairness, from a business point of view, KISS is doing a tour in Europe and elsewhere overseas this year but god their fans tolerate a lot of abuse. 8-)

Since there doesn't seem to be much interest in the KISS comp, let's use this thread to cover all of Universal's [lilred]Playlist Plus[/lilred] 3-CD compilations which are coming out on Tuesday:

The Allman Brothers Band
James Brown
Marvin Gaye
B.B. King
KISS
Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Moody Blues
Rod Stewart
The Supremes
The Temptations
Various Artists: Classic Rock
Various Artists: Motown 50th Anniversary
The Velvet Underground

Doesn't seem to be anything included in the way of genuine rarities (although I think it's a nice touch that they included Hayward & Lodge's "Blue Guitar" on the Moodies' collection), but they supposedly contain all newly remastered tracks.

Complete list of Playlist Plus 3-CD compilations

"Remember Me, My Friend" is another Hayward/Lodge track, from the Bluejays album.

You are right, Jimbo. This collection is a very nice Moodies overview ... even has stuff from their Christmas album ...

I'm kinda glad they didn't include "Go Now" (even though I love Denny Laine :)). That always ruins the flow of Moody Blues comps for me.

Universal Music no longer does any classic rock archival material(I.E. previously unreleased tracks) for the North American market, leaving fans to seek out imports from England & Europe. This decision by Universal Music was probably a factor in the exit of their highly respected catalogue director Bill Levenson.

All or most of these tracks have appeared on the two disc compilation The Road Goes On Forever, now out of print, and re-released as Gold. This Allman Bros. compilation is unnecessary...but then again, so are most of these.

Universal Music no longer does any classic rock archival material(I.E. previously unreleased tracks) for the North American market, leaving fans to seek out imports from England & Europe. This decision by Universal Music was probably a factor in the exit of their highly respected catalogue director Bill Levenson.

It's Universal's loss as far as I'm concerned. Bill did some great work for that company.

Let's hope Hip-O Select continues to flourish as an exception to this Universal Music rule; their exemplary work is showing up anyhow in the remaining US brick-and-mortar shops (Virgin Megastores, Amoeba, indie stores, etc.) I suppose this rule isn't iron-clad, though, given the recent Elvis Costello reissues. Still, I wonder if the Elton John deluxe editions will be forthcoming in US editions.

I think the Supremes are starting to compete with The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd & our all time favs, The Doors for most overly comp'd group.

Get Rhino to knock on Greg Allmans door. I have been impressed with the out-takes Rhino have done.

I read that next year is the 40th Anniversary of The A.B.B

Wonder if this will result in some rarities ?

I must say, if it takes up the same space on the shelf, the Allman Brothers collection is a nice expansion of the "Stand Back" anthology, itself a fine collection.

All or most of these tracks have appeared on the two disc compilation The Road Goes On Forever, now out of print, and re-released as Gold. This Allman Bros. compilation is unnecessary...but then again, so are most of these.

Right you are. This collection is a TOTAL RIP-OFF. I bought it yesterday without doing my homework. It costs nearly $30 and contains thirty songs (on three CDs) - all from the brilliant early era and the mediocre mid-to-late '70s era. There are no liner notes and the packaging is minimal and generic at best. The "remastering," if there really is any, consists of compression to make the sound louder and punchier. By contrast the "Stand Back" anthology consists of TWO discs containing 32 songs including several gems from the Arista and Epic eras as well as a song from "Hittin' The Note" and ample liner notes and packaging. You DO get three songs from the first two albums which haven't been issued on a collection to my knowledge (who can keep track) on Playlist Plus but you'd be better off simply buying the first two albums (the first great, the second a masterpiece) which were reissued in remastered form about ten years ago. Amazon has them for $8 each.

So let's review:

Playlist Plus collection; thirty songs on 3 CDs in a crappy "environmentally concious" paper package for $28 = BAD
"Standback" Anthology: thirty-TWO songs on 2 CDs with quality packaging and liners for $14 = VERY MUCH BETTER.

These kind of collections are typically designed for indifferent and ignorant buyers (which ticks ME off all the more because I DID buy it) to give as Christmas presents. "Wow! Three CDs for less $30! Ahyuk, ahyuk.."

Caveat Emptor.

Except for The Doors, those artists all fall under the Universal umbrella. While most of the major labels have compilation series, at Universal it seems they start a new one every time the weather changes. Was it all that long ago that they started releasing the two-disc "Gold" compilations? Of course this time they had to get the word "playlist" in the title to appeal to the IPoders. Whatever...

I actually like several of the comps in the 2 cd Gold series, & BMG club prices them as low as $6 delivered if I wait for the right sale.
