I'm happy to see that the Archives project is still somewhat alive, but of all the unreleased albums, it's odd that he'll start with this one. That said, "Goin' Home" was the only thing I liked on Are You Passionate?, so I'm intrigued to hear the rest of the sessions.

First thing I thought of when I saw the thread title was some old friends of mine who recorded a Neil Young parody called "Cinnamon Toast." It was funny, though like most of these things went on to long. "Ma, give me butter now..."

This promises to be great!! I just hope it actually comes out! As with all things Neil, I'll not truly believe it until I actually have it in my hand.

Did you ever hear the parody "Kennedy Girls"? "I wanna live with a Kennedy girl, plenty of money the rest of my life... with a Kennedy girl". From thesame folks who brought us Stairway To Gilligan's Island.

Neil Young set to release new album

Apr 2, 2008

Neil Young and his long-time band, Crazy Horse, are set to release an album entitled 'Toast', the latest in the singer-songwriter's extensive Archives series.

The album will be comprised of tracks recorded in 2000 in a San Francisco studio that shares the album's name, with producer John Hanlon.

A statement on Neilyoung.com explains that Hanlon is currently mixing the material that was recorded.

The statement describes the songs as "bluesy" and "jazz-tinged", with "three solid rockers interspersed in the mix".

"Other songs are long with extensive explorations between verses," the statement continues. "Kind of like a down-played 'Tonight's The Night', except these songs deal directly with love and loss, not drugs. The ambient atmosphere, foggy, blue and desolate, pervades many of the tracks, if not all."

Here is Billboard's take:

Shelved Young/Crazy Horse album to see release
By JONATHAN COHEN
Billboard.com
NEW YORK — An April Fool’s Day joke it’s not: Neil Young has
another unreleased album ready to see the light of day.
Indeed, despite the fact that Young still hasn’t put out his
decades-in-the-works “Archives” boxed set, he’s authorized the
excavation of “Toast,” a Crazy Horse album shelved in 2000. “There
is no firm release date, but it’s coming,” a Young source tells
Billboard.com.
According to Young’s Web site, Crazy Horse recorded at the album’s
eponymous San Francisco studio “for months and came up with very
little” aside from the song “Goin’ Home,” which has been
occasionally performed live.
Some of the tunes written for the album wound up being recorded
instead for Young’s 2002 album “Are You Passionate?”
“Many songs share a bluesy, jazz-tinged vibe as a common thread,”
the site says of the project, which is being mixed by John
Hanlon. “Three solid rockers are interspersed in the mix. Other songs are
long with extensive explorations between verses, a Crazy Horse
trademark, kind of like a down-played ’Tonight’s the Night,’ except
these songs deal directly with love and loss, not drugs.”
Potentially even more confusing: the site claims “Toast” is the
first “special edition” of “a new series of unreleased albums.”
Whether this series is a part of, or separate from, the intended
“Archives” series is unknown.
Young’s last communique on the status of “Archives Vol. 1” came
in late January, when he stunned fans by revealing that the project
would only be released on Blu-ray and DVD, but not on CD. “There’s no
doubt it will come out this year,” he said.
Young will be back on the road this summer for a host of European
festivals, beginning June 27 at Rock in Rio
Madrid.

I'm glad I'm not a Neil Young fan, because when another year passes without the Archives, I just shrug.

There is no Archives project. This was something cooked up by Neil some 20 years ago in order to keep people talking and wondering about him and his work. The Archives project will never see the light of day because it doesn't exist.

Neil Young To Release Harvest Moon Live
2008 | May 27 | albumvote.co.uk

Neil Young is set to release two live albums on July 7 as he continues to plough through he's back catalogue of live recordings and bootlegs.

First up is live recording of the acclaimed 1992 album called 'Harvest Moon' called 'Harvest Moon Live' which was a follow up to he's 1972 classic 'Harvest'.
Secondly is an album of San Francisco studio recordings from 2000 called 'Toast'.
Track listings for both albums are to be confirmed.

Word is Neil Young has 2 more albums coming out in case you missed the other 3 posts. I'm not really a fan, but I think by now I know that these CDs are coming out.

from thrasherswheat.org--

Harvest Moon Live and Toast are no longer listed as available on Amazon.com.
No further information available as to why listed and withdrawn.
Although it was odd that they were both listed for release the same day?

Are these still planned for release on July 8?

Over on N Y Times comes word of an upcoming release called "Toast". Named after a defunct recording studio, "Toast" is "perhaps one of the most under-estimated and deceptive Crazy Horse records of all time, with many songs originally discarded, and then re-recorded with Booker T. and the MGs."

"Toast" will be the first NYA 'Special Edition' in a new series of unreleased albums.

from "n y times" @ neilyoung.com--

CRAZY HORSE "TOAST"
NY Times
In 2000, Crazy Horse was in San Francisco, south of Market street, at an old studio called "Toast." Coltrane had recorded there, among many other jazz greats, known and unknown. The Dot Com boom was happening and buildings were being bought and turned into lofts or torn down completely and rebuilt. New money was everywhere. Toast was a target. The place was a little run down and sort of on its last legs.
To a man, if you asked Crazy Horse about these sessions, you would learn that it was a depressing atmosphere and things were not going well. The band recorded there for months and came up with very little. Nothing, other than one song, "Goin' Home" was ever finished. But a lot was started. Several of the songs written at Toast showed up on the "Are You Passionate" album with Booker T. and the MGs. But that album met with mixed reaction.
Now, years later, John Hanlon, the original co-producer with Neil, is at work mixing all of the Toast material. Many songs share a bluesy, jazz-tinged vibe as a common thread. Three solid rockers are interspersed in the mix. Other songs are long with extensive explorations between verses, a Crazy Horse trademark, kind of like a down-played Tonight's the Night, except these songs deal directly with love and loss, not drugs. The ambient atmosphere, foggy, blue and desolate, pervades many of the tracks, if not all, with Tommy Brea's muted trumpet and dusky male and female counter-part BGs occasionally surfacing from Poncho and Ralph on one side, Nancy Hall and Pegi Young on the other. A cool and sleepy lounge piano rises in the fog occasionally.
The result of this is perhaps one of the most under-estimated and deceptive Crazy Horse records of all time, with many songs originally discarded, and then re-recorded with Booker T. and the MGs. The original performances now surface again through a foggy past. Like an abstract painting, lyrical images of a love lost and maybe even destroyed forever just refuse to die, creating a landscape littered with half-broken dreams and promises.
"Toast" is coming, a dark Crazy Horse classic for the ages. This first NYA "Special Edition" is the beginning of a new series of unreleased albums.

As for Harvest Moon Live ( as well as Toast ), it all can be considered speculation at this point...

Two albums, but don't know if it's part of the NYA SE or NYA PS series CDs...

Here's a *possible* track list derived from the songs played live on the HM tour. The tracklist for HM Live could include:
Long May You Run / From Hank To Hendrix / Unknown Legend / Silver And Gold / You And Me / War Of Man / Old King / Such A Woman / Harvest Moon / Heart Of Gold / Dreamin' Man / Natural Beauty / Don't Let It Bring You Down / Cowgirl In The Sand / After The Gold Rush / Old Man / Sugar Mountain.

Shit, at first I got all excited to read he was releasing an unheard Crazy Horse album but then I read the part about "Tommy Brea's muted trumpet and dusky male and female counter-part BGs occasionally surfacing from Poncho and Ralph on one side, Nancy Hall and Pegi Young on the other. A cool and sleepy lounge piano rises in the fog occasionally."

Blech. I'm a big fan of Neil and the horse in their electric ragged glory but this sounds awful (like the dreadful ARE YOU PASSIONATE).

The latest on these, as reported by Thrasher's Wheat:

Toast: Probably out in 2009. If it comes out this year, it'll be late in the year.
Harvest Moon Live: Next year.
