Phantom Planet At Home With Fueled By Ramen
February 22, 2008, 10:30 AM ET John Benson, Cleveland
Considering it's been four years since Phantom Planet last released a studio album, titling its new record "Raise the Dead," due April 15 on Fueled By Ramen, is apropos.
"It seems like every record is sort of a new beginning for us," Phantom Planet singer Alex Greenwald tells Billboard.com "This one took embarrassingly about four years from start to finish. But with a new label, which we're really excited about it, it's sort of a new path for us."
Even with a change in lineup (original guitarist Jacques Brautbar left the band after the release of 2004's self-titled effort) and labels (the band was dropped from Epic), Greenwald said Phantom Planet never considered breaking up. In fact, the quartet remained busy, going on tour with '60s band the Zombies and Sting, as well as working on material that would become "Raise the Dead."
"We're always together, but I think what makes this band unique is we're constantly questioning the future for the band," Greenwald says. "I don't say that in a hopeless way, but all of us are constantly asking why are we in the band, is it meaningful to us? And obviously, this record answered those questions we asked."
Inspired by the music of cult leaders such as Charles Manson, Jim Jones and David Koresh, "Raise the Dead" was written and recorded over an 18-month period, beginning in late 2006.
"A lot of the new record has a sense of hopefulness with something sinister behind it," Greenwald says. "For us, it's experimental. Whether it's the title track or 'Geronimo' or 'Do the Panic' or 'Confess,' you sort of see us at our most dynamic we've ever been. The lows are really low and the highs are really high."
Greenwald says he expects the up-tempo "Do the Panic" to be the first single, with a possible early April release. The Los Angeles-based group is also taking part in the upcoming Honda Civic Tour, which features Panic at the Disco, Motion City Soundtrack and the Hush Sound. The bill kicks off April 10 in San Francisco.
"For the time being, what the band and the record need is constant touring, no matter how you do it as a headliner or opener," Greenwald says. "So this tour came up through Panic (at the Disco), which is now our labelmate." He adds, "Also any tour we're offered, we usually take."
[title]RAISE THE DEAD[/title] is Phantom Planet's fourth full-length collection, following 1998's highly-praised PHANTOM PLANET IS MISSING, 2002's THE GUEST (which included the now-classic California, known far and wide as the theme song to Fox's The O.C.), and 2004's PHANTOM PLANET. The band started production on the new disc eighteen months ago, eventually paring down 120 tracks written and 30 tracks recorded to the final 12. The result is an album that effortlessly mixes the band's sixties pop influence with a modern slant that's extremely refreshing in today's increasingly homogenous musical landscape. With RAISE THE DEAD, whether you decide to explore the cult-influenced iconography or just want to listen to the songs on a purely visceral level, it's hard to deny that it was worth the four year wait.1. Phantom Planet end SXSW on a high note
Mar 16, 2008
Phantom Planet played the last of three shows at SXSW tonight, with a rousing show at Spiro’s Amphitheatre.
Taking to the stage at 11pm, the Californian band went down a treat with the crowd who yelled song titles between tracks.
“I thought we were playing for a new audience tonight “ said singer Alex Greenwald, “but I just heard two of our most obscure songs shouted at us, which is nice, but you're not gonna get 'em because we haven't rehearsed them!”
“Bands have the worst memories so if you shout something that’s like a hundred years old like ‘The Galleria’ I don't know if we could do it justice.”
Greenwald recently became known for his cover of Radiohead’s ‘Just’ with Mark Ronson, and tonight addressed head-on another reason for his notoriety – namely the theme tune to TV show ‘The O.C. ’
“For those of you who don't know we wrote this song and then it got a lot of stigma attached to it, but this is our last show here and then we go back to California so it seems appropriate” he told the crowd, who went bananas for the track.
The band previewed new material at the show which features on the band’s forthcoming album including opener ‘Geronimo’, ‘Do The Panic’ and ‘Leave Yourself’.
Dedicating ‘Do The Panic’ to a band called Chief, Greenwald said:
“They’re friends of ours from New York and they're awesome. They played today and if you didn't see them you really fucked up!”
The band were thrilled with the crowd reception with Greenwald asking his bandmates:
“Do you not agree this is the best audience we've played for? It’s like a house party.”
Phantom Planet’s new album ‘Raise The Dead’ comes out April 15.
They played:
‘Geronimo’ ‘Always On My Mind’ ‘Dropped’ ‘Lonely Day’ ‘Do The Panic’ ‘Knowitall’ ‘Leave Yourself’ ‘Big Brat‘ ‘California’
