Portishead's new album 'nothing like' predecessors

Feb 25, 2008

Portishead have revealed more about 'Third', their long-awaited new album, describing it as the "older brother" of its predecessors.

Guitarist Adrian Utley has also described the album's sound as a departure in some areas.

He told Billboard: “It sounds nothing like 'Dummy' or 'Portishead', but it’s definitely its older brother or sister. It’s the same mindset we’ve always had, only further down the road.”

He also added that the album features some fast tempos for the band, with some tracks reaching 120bpms.

Despite the 11-year wait between 'Third' and 1997's self-titled effort, Utley claims the future of the band was never in doubt.

He said: “There was never no Portishead. It was just we’d had enough, and we didn’t have any ideas.

“We all got on with various different things, but we worked on each other’s projects. There was always Portishead.”

'Third' is released on April 28.

I hope this doesn't mean less jazz & more techno/house........ I didn't like Beth Gibbons solo cd.

I only heard part of Gibbons's solo CD in a store but I have to say I didn't like it either. I remember wondering what that sparce, depressing music was they were playing and wishing they would turn it off (actually, a pretty common feeling when I visit independent record stores these days).

To me, what makes Portishead's first two albums interesting is the contrast of Beth's old-school jazzy vocals with the exotic sounds, samples and spy-movie guitar of the band. I'm looking forward to hearing the new one, but I also hope they haven't strayed too far from what they do best.

The album has been leaked for about two weeks now. Word of mouth appears to be mixed. No real surprise there; after ten years, it will be a difficult task to overcome inflated expectations.

HI:

I have heard the leak. The first part of the CD is much stronger than the second half.

I do like Machine Gun, And there is a short 1:30 minute + track that has Beth
singing over what sounds like a ukulele. Intereting.
