Edgar Wright (Spaced, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ) on the upcoming movie.

Quote:
“It’s written and we’re doing a second draft of it,” said Wright. “It’s going to be less overtly comedic than anything else I’ve ever done. It’s more of a full-on action adventure sci-fi film but with a comedic element – in the same spirit of a lot of escapist fare like that. It’s certainly not a superhero spoof or pastiche and it certainly isn’t a sort of Honey I Shrunk The Kids endeavour at all.”

He’s not got anybody in mind to play comicdom’s tiniest hero just yet, so the big question at the moment is what incarnation will the hero take - the goody-two-shoes scientist Hank Pym originated by comic legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby or Ant Man mark-II, the more roguish Scott Lang?

“Ah well, it could be Scott Lang, it could be Hank Pym, it could be both – okay it is both, now there’s an exclusive for you.”

I never found Scott Lang to be especially "roguish". It's the current Ant-Man (whose name I don't know, as I didn't read that recent book) who uses his power to sneak into Ms. Marvel's shower, is it not? That guy's the rogue, if anyone.

I thought this film would be a vehicle for Simon Pegg? I have to say I am a little worried about this movie. I just don't see Ant-Man working somehow. I would love to be proved wrong though.

He started out as a thief, so they're probably basing the question on that.

the current Antman is the scum of the earth and proud of it. I'd go Pym. Besides, it's all part of getting the different elements of the Avengers together so let's go, already!

I read somewhere that Pym and Lang will both be in the movie, with an older retired Pym mentoring the younger Lang, like Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro.

Yeah, I guess.

I know he stole Pym's gear, but he was an ex-con before that, right? Was his prison sentence theft-related?

I found Lang's proclivity for making references to movies a good idea that was poorly executed. Wonder if that will be in the movie?

As long as he has the Kirbyesque helmet, all will be well. :)

You don't necessarily want a guy this skinny playing him, but the convention photo below should serve as proof that a real life version of Ant-Man's costume could look pretty good and not come off as silly:

I heard Pixar might be doing an animated version. I wish I could remember where I heard it so I could post a link.

It's been mentioned in the Marvel/Disney thread here. I think it first came up on Blog@Newsarama.

Actually, I think they cited Entertainment Weekly.

Are you joking? While i think he has a fun look to him, it does look really silly and I think most people won't take him as "seriously" as a character like Superman or Spider-Man.

Tone down the color, modify a few details, and put him in an environment where he doesn't stand out like such a sore thumb and it might work. Mind you, though, an Ant-Man movie could be done essentially straight, but it would be a bad idea to take the concept TOO seriously.

I think the costume would work just fine in animation.

Not joking, although of course I'd want the costume to look more sophisticated than the convention guy's. I don't doubt that the general public will never take to Ant-Man the way they have to the front line superheroes, but he was a favourite of mine when I was little (no pun intended ... I loved The Atom back then too) and I felt that the 3-D helmet actually looked pretty good and not ridiculous.

I was thinking about this earlier today-- it might be a cool hook for either the Atom or Ant-Man if they couldn't switch back to normal size and were trapped in their smaller sizes. At least for a debut story.

No idea if Gardner Fox did this because of the same reasoning that you just expressed, James, but The Atom's costume originally didn't become visible except when he had shrunk. He was never seen at full size as The Atom.

Ant-Man also looks sort of wrong at full size, like in that convention photo. Surround him with giant cats and pencils and he looks better, somehow.

Ant-Man looks like an astronaut or something exploring our own world from a different perspective.
