JACKSON BROWNE – SOLO ACOUSTIC, VOL. 2 SET FOR RELEASE

Recorded live at concerts worldwide, the title follows up 2005’s GRAMMY®-nominated Vol. 1; a new studio album from Browne is due in late ’08.

Jackson Browne to perform solo dates in the U.S. beginning March 7

Los Angeles, CA, January 31, 2008: On March 4, 2008, singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will release JACKSON BROWNE–SOLO ACOUSTIC, VOL. 2, the second in a series of live albums recorded at recent solo concerts in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. Building on 2005’s critically acclaimed and GRAMMY®-nominated Jackson Browne – Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1, the album features twelve career spanning songs, with Browne alternately on both guitar and piano. Also like its predecessor, VOL. 2 features lively exchanges between Jackson and his audiences. The disc will be available on the artist’s own Inside Recordings label, with distribution through ADA.

One selection from JACKSON BROWNE – SOLO ACOUSTIC, VOL. 2, “Something Fine,” reaches all the way back to the artist’s landmark 1972 self-titled debut album, about which Rolling Stone wrote in its original review, “Jackson Browne’s sensibility is romantic in the best sense of the term: his songs are capable of generating a highly charged, compelling atmosphere throughout, and – just as important – of sustaining that pitch in the listener’s mind long after they’ve ended.”

That rapt connection is felt throughout JACKSON BROWNE–SOLO ACOUSTIC, VOL. 2., which also features the track “Redneck Friend” from his second album, For Everyman, and four songs from Browne’s most recent studio album, 2002’s The Naked Ride Home: “Never Stop,” “The Night Inside Me,” “My Stunning Mystery Companion” and “Casino Nation”. Other highlights include “In The Shape Of A Heart,” from 1987’s Lives In The Balance, “Sky Blue And Black” from 1993’s I’m Alive, “Alive In This World” from ’96’s Looking East and the 1982 Top 10 hit “Somebody’s Baby,” originally featured on the Fast Times At Ridgemont High soundtrack.

Throughout his career, Jackson Browne has defined a genre of songwriting and performing charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. He’s been honored with inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2004) and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame (2007). As influential and enduring as Browne’s music is his legacy as an advocate for social and environmental justice. Recent humanitarian honors include the John Steinbeck Award and the Chapin-World Hunger Year Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award. In 2007, Browne re-united with his Musicians United For Safe Energy (MUSE) co-founders Graham Nash and Bonnie Raitt to oppose a revival of the nuclear energy industry.

Jackson Browne is currently at work on a studio album of new material slated for release in fall 2008. Following the March 4 release of JACKSON BROWNE–SOLO ACOUSTIC, VOL. 2., he will perform a series of solo concert dates in the U.S.

Just discovered on their Web site that Best Buy will have the new JB "Solo Acoustic Volume 2" CD for $9.99, including an exclusive bonus track (as a download) called "Walk Slow." Any word of other exclusive tracks through other retailers or online sources?

I'm disappointed Best Buy chose to make a bonus track available as a "download" :sigh: ...rather than include it on the CD (as they did on the Vol. 1 exclusive Best Buy CD release).

If that is the correct bonus track, it is likely "Walking Slow". (The original studio track of "Walking Slow" is found on Late For The Sky.)

Me too Steve. I absolutely HATE this free bonus track download thing, especially from BB. I've bought three CD's from them that had this, and none of them worked...

This one gets thumbs up! Beautifully recorded, excellent performances. The packaging however, is a digipak, with no booklet and spare liner notes. And at ~70 mins., there would've been plenty of room for Best Buy to squeeze on a bonus track or two.

It seems to me Jackson Browne often skimps on the package. I bought the anniversary version of Running on Empty and it had very few extras, a couple demos and a DVD photo book. No reflections on the significance of the album or anything. I expect a little booklet or at least some liner notes. I'm not saying he has the backing to include a couple DVDs and a book like the 30th anniversary of Born to Run, but it seems to me they could do something more.

I have to agree with Jimbo. I don't know most of the songs (yet), but it's beautifully recorded, and it's a great show.

Anyone grab the downloadable track that's free with a purchase at Best Buy? How is it?

I picked up the BB JB today. The bonus track is a low bit rate (128 kb) mp3 of Walkin' Slow. It's an ok version of a great song in a CRAPPY format.

My first take on the cd is (mostly) very strong performances of some of his weaker songs. .The only song I think is both a strong performance and one of his strongest songs is Something Fine. The Night Inside Me & My Stunning Mystery Companion are also enjoyable. In the Shape of A Heart is much better then the studio band version. I was taken by how little his voice has aged.

2 songs I do like, Somebody's Baby & Redneck Friend don't work for me in these solo arrangements. Somebody's Baby especially was a mindless adolescent 80's rock song (written for Fast Times At Ridgemont High) & was similar to something early Heart would have done about a young "hot babe" (back before it was an enforced crime for 20 somethings to hit on teenagers!) &. while the radio friendly studio version worked, most of the lyrics come off hopefully insipid in this version. IT'S NOT A PIANO BALLAD. IT'S A FUN MINDLESS ROCK SONG! Similar criticism of Redneck Friend, except the puns are even more STOOPID in this setting.

I will own my bias is that I love the first 4 albums & Hold On Hold Out; + some parts of Runnin On Empty ( I DESPISE STAY; 50's vocal "rock" rubs me the wrong way; always has & always will - it's my vision of hell). The next album that I enjoyed the majority of was Naked Ride Home, his most recent. All the others had 1-3 songs that spoke to me, & that was it. At one time I owned his entire catalog, but I've sold most of the studio cd's after Hold On; the limited Japan best of with the live cd covers just about all of the later stuff I like except Crow On The Cradle from No Nukes..

I'll probably keep this cd, it isn't bad. It's just that I won't likely play it again. There's only so much time in this life, & when I want JB, I'm going to play his top quality material, not just "ok" stuff like this.

My wife is a big fan of Jackson Browne so we've seen almost every tour through our area in the last 20 years. I don't think he's done anything off Hold Out or Lawyers in Love since the 80s. He tends to concentrate on the first few albums and the latest one. I'm not as excited about the solo acoustic stuff. We saw him tour that way in the 90s and the crowd was louder than he was -- very rude. And his band the last few times has been terrific! His voice hasn't just held up, though: it's much improved from when he was young both in resonance and range. I think he's been taking lessons...

I actually like this one more then Vol 1.

Did anyone get the BB download of "Walking Slow" to work? This is the first time I've ever gotten a BB download to work for me...

A little help please!

I went to Best Buy and then put the code in at the Browne site for the download. It played "Walking Slow" in Quicktime, but I don't know how to get it saved to my hard drive (or where it's saved to my hard drive if it is).

Assuming you're on a PC and not a Mac, you need to either lose QuickTime altogether or try to enable another media player on your machine (Winamp for example) as the default application for handling MP3s. Once you do that you'll be given a dialogue box every time you click on a link for an MP3 file, and you can save or play.

(The reason I suggest losing QuickTime is that it tends to want to make itself the default app for all media files at startup, and even if you've changed your settings it will probably steal them back for itself at the next reboot. QT doesn't play nicely with other media software.)
