I watched this over the weekend, and it surprised me by being pretty good. I'm not a fan of "The Ultimates" by any means and only read a few issues of the first series. While this movie is clearly based on the Ultimates comics, in many ways it seemed more like old-school Marvel. The characters have their faults and foibles, of course, and their first mission together is an abject failure; however, when the need arises they set aside their own problems and conflicts and get the job done. The characterization of Captain America is especially well done, as is the pre-title sequence which is set in WW II.

Couple of things I didn't care for, though; the animation is just "okay;" it didn't seem much more detailed than some of the stuff on Cartoon Network. Plus, the motivation of the alien villains is never really addressed, much less explained. Overall, though, I'll give the movie a B-minus.

I meantioned this cartoon in that "Mjolnir thread" I made a week or so ago. I felt that while it was better than a lot of the stuff out there, it was somewhat lackluster. Lots of good little things in it, but not enough to make me say that yes it was a good film.

I think it played the middle of the road to such an extent that it didn't satisfy me as a classic Marvel fan or as a fan of the first two Ultimates arcs.

I've been avoiding watching this for several reasons, one of which is the fact that they've apparently mixed up members from the Ultimates and the Avengers(That and the fact that I still haven't watched my Clone Wars Volume 2 DVD yet).

I watched this one and enjoyed it for the most part. I think the alien's agenda is going to be fleshed out in part II (available on DVD this June). I hate how the Ultimate line has played Hank Pym and that complaint continues with this cartoon. I liked this Cap much more than I do the Ultimate comic Cap.

Spoiler alert!

I hated how the Hulk was able to lift Mjolnir. He is not worthy!! After initially being unable to lift Mjolnir, Hulk could then lift and weild it with ease.

I just finished the first disc. Like Kevin mentions, it's based on the storyline for the first Ultimate Avengers volume. They bypass some of the grittier parts of that storyline such as the abusive relationship between Hank and Janet (though he is verbally demanding of her and she caves into him.)

The battle against the aliens at the end is over with too quickly to make them seem like realistic opponents that require a team like the Avengers. Still, there is enough meat in this story to keep you captivated. It's definitely much better than the Dr. Strange movie.

I felt they could have gotten someone better for the voice of Cap. It just wasn't deep or commanding enough for how I "hear" Cap speak.

I'll throw in volume 2 and see how they do with that now that they have the team established. If you're on the fence about getting this one, I recommend making the leap. It's enjoyable.

So it took you two years to watch the first one, then just two hours to watch the second?

What can I say? It's a slow process sometimes and sometimes it's not so slow. Have you watched the second one, yet?

Ultimately...

...dissapointing, especially Hank Pym.
The animation wasn't too great, either.

These two movies were "Okay." Definitely nothing I would paid full price for (again!).
I bought the Dr. Strange movie, too, but I've been scared to watch it.

I liked both of them, and the Iron Man and Dr. Strange ones. My kids love them...well, not so much the Dr. Strange, because it's pretty boring until the last 30 minutes (waaaay too much origin and setup for a movie that short). The Iron Man and first Ultimate Avengers movies are the best ones, IMO.

I didn't care for the Dr. Strange DVD. I haven't seen the Iron Man one.

I haven't seen Ultimate Avengers 2, but I liked the others to varying degrees. I'd say Iron Man was the best, followed by Doctor Strange (though I agree about the pacing), then Ultimates.

I disliked the first ULTIMATE AVENGERS so much that I haven't bothered with any of the other recent Marvel titles you guys are talking about.

I thought the "Avengers" films were pretty good. I found the other two boring though. Iron man I forced myself to watch the end of and Dr Strange I gave up on after half an hour.

I liked that someone finally pronounced "Mjolnir" in a cartoon. (Okay, it may have been pronounced in an older cartoon, but this was the first time I noticed... course, the hammer in Ultimates is not "the real Mjolnir" to me. It looks more like Stormbreaker.)

John Rhys Davies shouts "Mjolnir!" many a time when he voiced Thor in the 90's FF animated series - I was like, "Oh, I get it - you don't pronounce the J!"

Yeah, a history professor I had said it was pronounced like "maul-near." Which makes sense to me since a "maul" is a hammer.

I thought it was "Mee-YOLE-ner". But those first two "syllables" squished together. Like a Claremont "M'YOLE-ner".
